UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN FLOCK, or LEIPZIG, GERMANY.
METHOD OF PRODUCING PL ACARDS WITH SUN K CHARACTERS R IMPRINTS.
Application filed August 19, 1911. serial lio. 644,953.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1913.
T0 aZZw/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN FLooK, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, and a resident of Leipzig, in the Kingdom of S aX- ony, :Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Methods of Producing Placards with Sunk. Characters or Imprints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a novel method of producing placards with sunk characters or imprints.
It is the special object of my invention to employ a new method by means of which aimpression composition where the imprints.
were made and reduced the reflecting effect 80 of such placards with sunk characters if said composition Was not highly polished which incurred considerable expense. I
It is the special purpose of this invention to overcome the described deficiencies and 35. produce placards with sunk characters which possess a highly reflecting effect.
F or the purpose of making the invention entirely clear, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents in top plan view a deeply engraved metal plate. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the entire device. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of part of a placard with a layer of metal foil or colored paper after the ,46 placard has been embossed. Fig. 4 illustrates in bottom plan view an imprinted I transparent cover, and Fig. 5 shows a por-' 'tion'of the finished placard with the trans parent cover pasted thereon.
Similar characters of-reference denote like parts in all the figures.
In accordance with the present invention a base plate for the impression composition is used consisting of a deep sunk metal plate A with the characters thereon in positive form. The tvpe and pictorial designs are accordingly produced. on this plate exactly in the same sunk form as they shall appear on the finished placard.
As a counterpart or impression plate a raised or male plate B is used prepared from the base platewhich has the sunk engraved positive characters, said impression plate being preferably made from a. hardening composition such as for instance matrix powder. essentially of deXtrin andcolophony powder. Between the deeply-engraved metal plate A and the impression plate B, the placard is printed. If this raised or male form is now covered with paper it may be used as an impression plate for highly polishedmaterial such as metal, metal foil and the like without marring or detracting from the luster of the impressed placard. As such surface portion of the raised or male .form does not Such hardening powder consists,
impair the high polish of metal during the process of imprinting the placards produced by means of such metal foil show a high re- For the purpose of obtaining colored or metallic effects on the placards, pieces of colored paper or metal foil D are glued to these portions. ofisaid placards where imprints are to be made. In accordance with this method placards with sunk characters may be produced with a metallic layer or a layer of metallic or colored paper. For increasing the elfect of such placards the surface of the deeply engraved metal form is covered with a color by rolling which then is printed upon a transparent sheet or film of celluloid, gela- The transparent sheet or tin or the like. film printed as described covers the placard with said printed portion so that only the sunk characters are prominently visible. Such a covering of the placardprote'cts at the same time the impression against damage or atmospheric influences. Thus if the printed celluloid plate shown in bottom or rear view in Fig. 4:, is secured to the im-, printed placard shown in Fig. 3, then the finished article presents the appearance shown in Fig. 5.
* I' claim as my invention 1. The process of producing placards with sunk imprints consisting in preparing the base plate with sunk characters thereon in positive form, producingtherefrom a male plate with raised characters, gluing pieces of fine sheeting of a striking color upon those portions of the placard to be imprinted, plac-vv ing the placard thus prepared between the base plate and the male plate, producing the portions coincide Withjthe imprints on sa d placard.
' 2. Theprocess of producing placards With :sunk imprints consisting in preparing the base plate with sunk characters hereon in positive form, producing therefrom a male plate With raised'characters, gluing pieces of metal 'foil upon those portions of the piacardto be imprinted, placii g the placard thus prepared between thebase plate and the maleplate, producing theimprint, applying .color to the base plate, printing therefrom on a transparent sheet,- and securing said transparent sheet as .a top cover to the placard so that its transparent portions coinside with the imprints on said placard.
Signed at Leipzig, G rermany, this 3d day of Augi st 1911.
