Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented May 6, 1913.
Application filed July 8,1908. Serial No. 44l.982.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Jous H. Srsas, a
citizen of the United States. residing at (azenovia, in the county of \Voodford and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism and Supiorts 'lhcrefor; and IV do hereby declare t. iat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a laundry apparatus or machine and has particular re crencc to a combined power washing and wringing mechanism.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a machine frame or support adapted to hold a washing machine and mounted thereon a supplemental supporting frame adapted to sustain a wringer mechanism, whereby the latter may be moved to different positions on said frame or support, the purpose being to operate the wrin er to wring clothes from the washing mac nine directly into a rinsingtub and from there into a basket or other receptacle, all being placed on said frame or support, and the washer and wringer mechanisms being driven by power.
This invention has for one of its objects, a frame support on which is slidably mounted a standard, including a platform and wringer mechanisms; a power washin machine supported by and hinged to said rame support, and power mechanisms mounted upon said frame support and adapted to be clutched t0 the wringer mechanism and driving parts of the power washing machine.
A further ob]ect of the invention is a frame support upon which may be suitably mounted a )ower washing machine; power devices witi which the mechanism of the washing machine may be suitably connected, and a wringer support slidably mounted on said frame support, said wrmgcr sup ort containin suitable mechanism adapte to have a cl utch enga ement with the power devices at either' or both ends of said frame support.
A further object of my invention is the rovision of a machine support. or frame having mounted thereon a supplemental supporting frame, which is adapted to hold a wringer, said supplemental having movably rame being I strip formed of spaced uprights or standards which are shdably mounted on said main frame, connections being provided for driving the wringcr in .various positions from the drive shaft. which is journuled in the machine support or frame.
For a further and full description of the invention herein and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
\Vlule the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment. of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my imn'ovcd machine; Fig. 2 is a )lan view of ig. l with a portion of the irame broken away and the power washing machine re moved; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the machine as the same would appear if taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail elevation of mechanism for locking the sliding frame supporting the wringer mechanism; Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of a connection between the shiftublefraute supporting the wringer mechanism and a sprocket pinion through which power is imparted to the wringer mechanism, and Fig. 0 is a detail front elevation of parts seen in Fig. 5 and also clutch mechanism with which the sprocket shown in Fig. 5. co? ierates.
Like numerals of reference int licate corres )onding parts throughout the figures.
n the drawings, a machine support or frame is shown comprising the front and rear longitudinal side sills l and 2 and the end sills or cross braces 3, which are united by bem connected to four legs or standards 4, and raced by the angle iron strips 5,
as shown in Figs.2and 3. The machine sup port or frame further com rises twolongitu dinal spaced braces (i and T, which extend from one end sill or brace ii to the other. as shown in Figs. 1 2 and 3, the former being of greater depth than the latter and having connected. with the upper and lower faces thereof angle iron strips 8, which serve as tracks on which the frame sup )orting the wringer mechanism may travel, in a manner to he described, and in connection with a third track 0, which is an angle iron extending longitudinally of aml attoo tached to the front sill 1.- The brace 7 serves as a support together with the sill 2, for a cross race or sill 10, best seen in Fig. 2, which supports-an upright or standard 11, for a purpose to be more fully described, and said-upright is braced from the. brace 7 by the strip 12, as shown.
A hinged mine to which a washing machine may be secured, is com )osed of the transverse beams 13 and 11 and the longitudinal beams 11", which connect the transverse beams 18 and 14. The beam 14 is )ICferably hinged at 16 to the end sill 3 o the machine support orframe, and when this frame is in its normal wosition or that position seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the beam 13 rests on the longitudinal brace 7, and the sill 2, as shown. A washing machine, preferably, a power washer, which I have indicated as 15, is placed upon this frame and secured thereto by the stay rods 15,which on age with the upper edge of the washing macfiine, as shown in Fig. 1, and at their ower ends secured in a. suitable manner to the beams 13 and 14. This washing machine may be of the t pe shown in the drawings, or of any pre erred construction, with power devices connected with the lid thereof, as'
shown, and sup ortin it in the manner in which I do on a iinged frame, it will be seen that when it is desired to move the washing machine out of the way for an purpose whatever, or to tilt the same for t 10 urpose of drawing the water therefrom, hat the. frame, to which the same is secured, and which I have just described, may be raised.
.In order to provide a suitable support for a wringer mechanism, provide a supplemental supporting frame, which frame is movabl mounted on the main frame, preferably y being slidable thercalong. This frame is preferably formed of spaced uprights, arms or standards with a top piece connected thereto, the wringer being m'ounted on said top-piece and havin certain driving connections movable win the supplemental frame for operatin it. These will be described at length hereinafter.
In the embodiment shown the spaced u rights or standards 17 extend up a suitable distance above the top of the machine on port or frame and part way down into tiie same, and are connected at their upper ends by a brace 18, and at or near their lower ends, by means of a platform, consistin of the transverse lie 19 and a )lurality 0 cross pieces 20, vhich said platform, as shown in Fi s. 2 and 3, extends out over the sill 1. T iese uprights 17, together with the pIatform and component parts constitute a supplemental frame which is mounted to be moved longitudinally of the machine support or frame upon the tracks 8 and 9, previously referred and in the following manner: Connecting the sills 19 of the platform, is a U shaped bar 21, which has a slidable relation in the manner shown in Fig. 3, with the track 0, and 22 and 23 are plates which are attached to the uprights 17, and over-ride the upper and lower angle iron strips 8 forming the track above referred to, connected with the longitudinal brace 6. With the connection between the uprights 17 and the platform or the sills 19 thereof, as just described, it will be understood that said uprights and platform, although they may move longitudinally of the machine support or frame, are firmly held to their position on said machine support or frame and prevented from an motion other than being moved longitudinally of said machine support or frame.
The uprights 17, at their upper ends are adapted to support a wrin er, referred to generally as 24, which may e of any of the usual types of wringers, except that to the spindle 25 of one of the rollers of said wringer, it is intended to engage a sprocket pinion 26, to be operated in a manner to be described, which will in turn, transmit motion to the wriuger rollers. The platform sup orted by these uprights, and composed of t 10 sills 19, and the cross pieces 20 serves as a sup ort for a tub, clothes basket or other suitable receptacle, and when the wrin or frame has been movedovcr to the left iand end of the frame support and alon side of the washing machine, clothes may 0 removed from the washing machine, after the raising of the lid thereof, as will be understood, and the same passed throu h the wringer rollers, and dro ped into tie tub, basket or other rcceptae 0, carried by the platform of the winger frame. If it is desired to pass the clothes through the rinse water after they have been passed through the wringer, from the washing machine, as just described, a tub containing the rinse water and the clothes may be supported on the ri ht hand end of the machine, to the: rear of tie wringer frame, it on either the right hand sill 3 and rear sil 2, or a plank or other rest laid upon the said sills, and the clothes wrung through the wringer may be dropped into a tub, basket or other recep-z tacle supported upon the platform in front of the wrmger.
Externfing longitudinally of the machine, and having its opposite ends 'ournaled respectively in one of the end soils or braces 3 and the cross brace 10, is a drive-shaft 27, on the inner end of which is carried, preferably a pulley 28, which me be driven by a belt 29 from any suitabl e source of power, such as a gaso one engine or other means. Also on said drive-shaft and at-or near the inner end thereof, is carried a sprocket inion 30, which operates a sprocket main or other endless belt 31, which engages the same, and said sprocket adap, when the chain passes around and transmits'power to a sprocket pinion 32, carried by a short stud 33, supported at the upper end of the upright 11, and said stud 33 also carries a gear pinion 34, which may or may not be integral with the.sprocket pinion 32, and with the said. gear pinion 34 is intended to mesh :1 ar wheel 35, which is one of the elements of the driving mechanism of the washing machine 15, and is intended to mesh only with the gear pinion 34 when the washing machine is inthat position shown in Fig. 1, and when swung out of the way or at? of its support it is understood that the gear 35 is removed from contact with the gear pinion 34.
On the drive-shaft 27, at or near its outer end, is carried a sprocket pinion 36 or other equivalent'driving member, which operates a sprocket chain or other endless belt 37, which passes around and is intended to driva'a sprocket wheel 38 or other equivalent driving member, havin a fixed connection with a longitudinally isposed countershaft 39 and said sprocket wheel 38 has the extended hub 40 with a clutch .face, as shown in Fig. 2. The shaft 30, just referred to, is disposed between the front sill 1 and the brace 6, supporting the angle iron tracks dand'has its opposite ends journaled in the end sills or braces 3. On said shaft 39, near the right 'hand end thereof, looking at Fig. 2, and removed-a suitable distance from the sprocket'wheel 38,-. i s carried and prefera ly fixed thereto, a collar 41 having a clutch face 42. On the shaft 39 is loosely carried a sprocket wheel or other equivalent driving member which is intended to have an intermittent clutch engagement with the clutch faces of the collar 41 and the sprocket wheel 38, whereby power may be transmitted to the sprocket pinion 26, above referred to. This sproc et wheel, which I have just referred to, is indicated as $3 seen in Figs. 2, 5 and 6, and has anextended hub portion 44 with a clutch face 45, adapted, when the supplemental supportin frame with its platform is moved to the le t handof the machine, to have a clutch engagement with the clutch face of the extended hub 40 of the sprocket wheel 38, and is also rovided with an extended hub portion provided with a clutch face 47, parts are in that position shown in Fi 2 and 6, to have a clutch engalgeraent with the clutch face 42 of the co ar 41. To retain the sprocket wheel 43 in cooperative relation with the wringer frame, the hub as is rovided with an annular groove 48, which is enga by a forked arm 49, carried by one o the uprights 17 of tha'wringsr frsme,as best seen in Fig. 5; so that as the wringer or supplemental saporting-frame is it,
the machine support or name,
the sprocket wheel 43;will be moved longitudinally on the shaft 39, for the purpose of either detaching it from the clutch of the sprocket wheel 38, the clutch of the collar 41, or connecting the same therewith.
The sprocket wheel 43, just described, operates a sprocket chain or other endless belting 50, and said sprocket chain travels around and operates the pinion 26, connected with one of the rollers of the wringer, as aforesaid, and said sprocket chain or endless belting 50, travels around the idlers 51 and 52, supported by one of the uprights 17 of the wringer frame. It will be noticed that the upper ends of the uprights 17, extend at right angles and support the wringer mechanism at the inner end thereof, and this creates the necessity forthe idlers, over which the chain 50, travels; because it is desired, when the wringer frame is at that end of the machine sup ort or frame supporting the washing maciine, to have the wringer mechanism extend over in the direction of the tub and partially above the same, so as to be in a convenient location for passing the clothes through the wringer, after they are removed from the washin machine.
I have I()Vl(0d mechanism for locking and retaining the wringer frame in an adjusted )osition, when either of the clutch fm'es of the piocket wheel 43' are connected with the clutch parts carried at or near the opposite ends of the shaft 39, as previously described, and said mechanism is also suported and: arrau ed in such a manner that it may be operated upon by lever mechanism or similar. means for moving the wringer frame a predetermined distance, for the purpose of releasing the clutch parts of the sprocket wheel 43, from either of the clutch parts on the shaft 39 with which the same may be engaged. This mechanism, to which I have just referred, consists of a reciprocally suppo-ted bar 53 best seen in Figs. and 4, and which is hung upon and has movement on rollers 54 supported b the longitudinal brace (l. '1 ie method of ianging the bar 53 on the rollers, is by means of theiiivertcd U shaped strips 55, the horizontal portions of which .ride and have movement on the rollers 54, while the vertical portions of the strips will engage with said rollers, and thereby limit the endwisc movement of the bar 53. Said bar 53 is further providedon its lower ed e and at or near its, opposite ends, with note cs 56, with which is adapted to engage one eudof a weighted arm I57, fulerumed atSB to a support 59, attached to and depending from one of the uprights .17 of the 'wringer frame, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In Fig. 4, the arts are in'that position shown in Fig. 2 wit the weighted arm 5? engaging a notch 53 in the bar 53, which will retain the locking gagement of the clutch parts 42 and 47, as
ohown in Fig. 6.
(3O denotes a'lever which" isdisposed in the main 'frame support and extends up a 'suitable distan'ceabove the-top thereof, to be within convenient and easy reach of an operator, and said lever is fulcrumed'at. ($2 to a strip (33, secured to the'bracetl', and the lower endof the lever is 'pivotallyconnected with a strip til'whichis' fixed in'a suitable manner to the bar 53. -""-'lhus*itwill be secn that upon'throwing thelever (SO-to the right,-

The lever is merely brought into day for the purpose of moving the bar 53 when it is desiret to disconnect. the clutch parts which control the 0 eration of the wringing mechanism. "Shoo d it be desired to move the ,wringer frame from the right -hand end of the machine to theleft hand end thereof, or vice versa the operator will raise the weighted end of the arm 57, by engaging it with his foot or his hand, as he" may desire, and having; released Bald arm from the notch in the bar, he will then be able to Hhove the \vringcr frame to ita-deaired )oaition on the frame support, as will he on crntoml,
For the purpose of uiding the end of the weighted arm 57, w llCll has engagement with the notches (iii in the lmr 53, I rovide a forked arm (34, see hi s. 1 and 3, t irough the forked end of which, the weighted arm 57 is operatively carried, and said arm is Hecun-d to and depends from one of the upright 17 of the wringe'r frame, which supports the weighted arm.
