GARFENDER'. 7 APPLICATION FILED JULY24, 1911. 1 ,06 1,0 1 9. Patented May 6, 1913.
E\ N\ Q s} a s R Q Q fix WITNESSES: INVENTOR: mztw/ I j y, fia nwa 21L I JAOIB SCHNEIDER, OF PHILADELPHIA IPENNSYLVANIA. l
' CABJENDER.
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that 'I, JACOB SCHNEIDER, a citizen of Switzerland, -residing at Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful .Improvement in Car-Fenders, whereof the foliowing is a specification, reference being'had to 'the accompanying drawing.
y invention relates to fenders wherein" a wheel guard is upheld in normally 'inop erative position beneath the car, in front of the front wheels of the latter, by connec-' tion with a swing frame at the front of the car platform; so that when said frame 'is' struck and swung inwardly .byan ob ect on the road bed, said wheel guard-is loweredto its operative position to fend said object from said.wl1eels,.and is heldJin operative position by the detention of the swing frame in abnormal position, effected by an automatically operative detent engaging said swing frame. v
As hereinafter described my, invention includes an oscillatory wheel guard thebottom edge of which is a, brush formed of bamboo, ratan orsimilar flexible material,-
said-guard being pivoted at its upper edge so as to hang vertically in front ofthe wheels when in operativeposition, but capable of being swung. forwardly andupheldwhen not. inoperation, by a link piv'otallyconnecting it with a swing frame at the front of the car, including a panel of flexible reticulated fabric. Said frame is also pivoted at its upper edge so as to be vertically pendent inoperative position, but is aapable of being swung inwardly to set said wheel. guard in operative position. -Said swing frame is provided with a detent sector pivotally connected therewith,'ha-ving a serrated edge, and adapted to slide circumfer. entially' in a bearing provided with a. detentincluding a spring pressed bolt arranged to engage the successive serrations in said sector so as to hold the latter any position to which said frame may be swung. Moreover, said link connecting said wheel guard and swing frameis ope'ratively coniected with the valve of an air'brake mechinism, so that, upon movement of said swing frame to set said wheel guard in operative )osition, said brake is ap lied to arrest thenovement of the car; sald valve being-held n operative position by .the detention of aid swing frame, when swung backward, .5 above contemplated.
In the -drawings:Figure I is a frag- I specification of hettersiatent:
--cated in Fig.- I, said frame'5 has at 9 with the sector '10 such detention being wheel ;-pivota :19; the latter beingrigidly connected with "'85: th e' car;
tum so asnot to interfere with of the car by contact-wlth projecting pav- 100 or feet beneath said in Fig. II, said car is pro '110 mentary-sideview of a car, having a convenient embodimentof my-invention applied thereto.- Fig. II is a diagrammatic 6 plan view showing the relation of the car brake-valve to the fender link by which it is operated. "j In said figures the car bodyl' is provided with the platform-2 and supported by wheels 6 3 on. the track 4. The
p swing frame5 is mounted tooscillate upon the ivot 6 in the bracket 7 extending below said platform 2 in rigid "connection" with the car. As india forami- 7 nouspanel 8, preferably of flexible'reticulated fabric, conveniently cord or 'wire' net ting, and said franie is pivotallyconne'cted edge 11. Said sector 10 isadapted to slide 7 circumferentially in the bracketf12 having the detentqslide bolt 13 which is'pressed" detainediri any position in s whrch itmay' be'set'; Said frame '5'is-pivotallyconnected bypthelink 15-with the uardLwhich includes the rigid'bar 17 3 connected: at 18 --with the-bracket v The bottomv edge-of said wheel guard is a: flexible brush preferably formed of bamboo, ratan or similar flexible'elements ,21 stiif enough -'the car wheels, :injurying said to fend a body away from but flexible enough to'avoid 9 body said brush elements being eniently nuts 24. Itmay be observed that in the normal position of the'fender shown in Fig. I,
said swing frame 5 hangs vertically from its pivotal connection with the car, but said wheel guard is upheld in inoperative posis the progress ing stones or similar objects upon'thef road bed; such construction and arrangement be a ing advantageops in that it permits said brush 21v to be made of such extentas to barely clear the said uard isset in operative position with its a justable stop 25' against saidbracket 19, and thus prevent-the passage bfliands ard. As indicated diagrammatically videdwith pipes 26 and 27 leading to and from the main valve 28 of the m brake mechanism which is located'at the front of the car platform2 to be operated by the mo having theserrated p n into engagement with the serrations-1n said I i sectorby the spring 14; so that said frame temporarily 0 I clamped-between-said.-. bar IZAshid the,bar 22, by the bolts 23 andsurface of the road bed when torman,- and said are connected by the branch 30 having the auxiliaryvalve 31 be-,
neath the car, arranged to .be. operated the lever 34. Said lever 34: is ivotally con-" nected by the link 35'with t e arm 36 on said 11111: 15, so that; when. said swing frame is in the normal vertical position as'shown' m Fig. I, s id valve 31 remains closed -and the brakes 'areucontrollableksolely by the valve 28, but when said swing frame 5 is swung inwardly to the .position'to, release the wheel guard so that it may assume its operative position as abovecontemplated,
theconsequent-movement of saidlink '15 operatessaid auxiliary valve 31 to automati-" cally applg-the brake. However, it is to be.
understoo that ;bralre. ,val ve 31 and wheel guardmay be contemporaneously returned to, their normal position by manual returnof' the swingframe- 5 -to its normal j'ertical position s'h'own; 4 v y I do not desire toilimit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement 3 herein set forth, it is Lobv'ious that various modifications may be jmade therein 1.
