JIMECHANISM ron AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLING THE seam) or AND STOPPING ENGINES.
T 0 all ZL'ltOHL i2 may concern '..Be it known that we. HARRY R. II ELCH States, residing at Logansport. in the county of Cass and State of'Indiana. have invented Automatically (cntrolling 'the Speed of and Stopping Engines, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention 'ertains to mechanism for automatically controlling the speed of and stopping engines: and it contentmple and inexpensive regulator and stop. readily appligovernors of practithe event of the throttling governor failing to perform its function. to quickly regulate full stop. as the occasion demands.
Our novel-regulator and stop is adapted to remain in a marking state for an indefinite eriod and when the necessityarises is posit ve and rapid in acting, as will be fully appreciated from thefollowing description and claims when the same are conaccompanying and forming part of this Figure lis a front elevation, parts broken awa and in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevationil Fig. 3- is a horizontal section on line 3+3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is adetail sectional tical transverse section on'line 55 of Fig. 4.
Similar numerals designate'corresponding parts inall of theviews of the drawings referring to' which: 1 .is thecasing of a throttling governor, 2 is the frame thereof.
3 is the vertically movable and rotatable equipped with centrifugal balls 4 and a circumferentially grooved portion 5.
6' isthe miter car through which rotary motionis transmitted to the stem 3..
.7- is a} shaft provided with a belt wheel Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 11, 1912. Serial No. 690,013.
Sand also with a miter gear 9 which latter the gear 6, and 1 0 is a Sawyers lever 11 4 with a bifurcated arm 12; the latf terbemg arranged in engagement with the 5 portion 5 of'the stem 3. I
-In-the present and preferred embodiment l .ofo'ur, invention we provide a fixed cylinder support-14, and in said I Patented May 6,1913.
cylinder we arrange what may properly be denominated a piston 15. The said piston is provided with a rod 16 which is preferably connected thereto in a hinged or pivoted manner. and surrounding the said rod 16 a strong expansion spring 17 which is interposed between the piston abutment 18 within the cylinde at the'end thereof adjacent ,the Sawyers lever 11. Interpcsed between and connected to the piston rod lG'and the upper end of the lever 11 is a flexible connec- Sawyers tron 19. preferably 1n the form of a chain as shown. and arranged'alongside the ex posed end of the piston rod 16 is a disk 20. The said disk is supported to rotate upon 'a center Bland is provided with a peripheral abutment 1'22. reference to the drawings that the disk 20 is provided with a lateralpin 23, disposed and adapted to rotate'about its axis in a. bearing :24 formed in the exposed portion of the rod 16.
At 25 on the support 14 is fulcrumed a. trigger 26 which has an upper arm posi- It will also be seen bv:
'15 and an tloned to engage theabutment 22 of disk 20,-
and a lower and comparatively longer arm arranged to be engaged by the lower arm of the Sawyers lever 11.
The practical operation of our invention is as follows: The mechanism is set as shown in Figs. 2 and 4z'. 6., the piston rod 16 is drawn outward against the action of the spring 17 and so as, to rotate the disk 16 in thedirectionindicated 'by arrow in Fig. 2 until the abutment 22 front of and caught by the upper arm of the trigger 26. In the said positions the parts remain during the'normal running of the engine. In the event. however, of the drive belt (not shown) slipping off the wheel ,8 or for any other reason the engine runs away the governor balls 4 will'either rise, whereupon the governor stem 3 will be forced downward and through'its circumferentially grooved portion 5 will depress the bifurcated arm 12 and pull inward and downward the upper arm of the Sawyers lever 11. When this takes place the lower arm of the Sawyers lever will force outward the lower arm of the trigger 26 and in that way release the disk 20from the upper arm of the trigger. Then'upon the release of the disk 20 the strong spring 17 operates through the rod 16 and the chain 19 to; pull the upper arm of the lever 11 toward the. cylinder 13 and thereby raises the arm 12' and with it the stein 3. with the result that the steam is cut off.
Itwill be gathered from the foregoing that our novel dericeis simple and inexpensive in construction and embodies no delicateparts such as are likely to get outof cumferentiallygrooved portion; a-shaft; a
bifurcated arm fixed on saidshaft and cngaging said circuinferentially grooved portion; a lever, also fixed on said shaft and having upwardly and downwardly extending arms; a cylinder; a piston movable in the cylinder'and havin a forwardly extending rod that exten 5 beyond the forwardend of the cylinder; a connection in-. termediate the pistonrod and the upper arm of the lever; a spring incased in the cylinder and interposed between said piston, and an abutment in the forward portion of vthe cylinder; a rotary disk connected oti its center with the exposed portion of the piston rod and having a peripheral abutment; and a pivoted trigger having an anti oposed to the diskabutment and .also havllng an arm opposed to the lower arm of the ever.
2. In mechanism for the purpose described, the combination of lever arms, a rotary disk having a peripheral abutment, a spring actuated mechanism connected with the disk oil the center thereof and also connected with one arm' of the lever and adapted when the disk is released to exertpull on said arm, and a trigger having a portion opposed to the other lever arm and .-alsofhaving a portion opposed to the abutment of the disk.
3. The combination of a cylinder,- spring, piston. piston rod, lever. connected with the piston rod. rotary notched disk connected with the piston rod, and trigger normally engaging the disk to hold the spring against action and actuable by the lever torelease the disk and spring. 7
4. In combination with a governor, a sto attachment COlllPl-lSlHgtl c vlinder,'a dis journaled beyond the cylinder, a spring pressed piston movably mounted in the cylinder. 'a rod connected to' the piston and eccentricallv connected to' the dlSk, a trigger for holding the disk, and means adapted to be operated by the governor to move the triggerto release the disk.-
In testimony whereof 'we' 'afiixour signaturesin presence of twowitnesses.
