Description

UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
s'rAcY B. HASELTINE, oF cHIcAep, ILLINciIs, AssI'eNoa To WILLIAM H. MINER, oF
omesso, ILLINOIS.
To all wiz-om, t may concern:
Be it known that I, 'STAOY B. HASELTINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented 'a certain new and useful Improvement in HeaterfDoor Fasteners, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the ings, forming a part of this specication.
My invention relates to heater door fasteners.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a fastener for heater doors of railroad refrigerator cars and other doors, of cheap manufacture, and easy application and operation.
Another object is to provide a door fastener that will securely fasten a door, and be of assistance in tightly closing the same.
It will, of course, be understood that in the detailed description that will follow I am merely setting. forth what I at present conceive to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, andiiI'wish it understood that I do not limit myself to such' embodiment, as it is readily apparent vthat the features of my invent-ion may be applicable to a variety of uses and different forms of apparatus. I will, however, describe herein a specific form'which my invention would takein connect-lon with the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is an elevation door fastener embodying my invention applied to a refrigerator car heater door.
' 2 is a sectional View through the heater door when closed and locked, and a plan view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the fastener on line 3 3' of Fig. 4 showing the door being opened by the upward movement of the handle of the fastener. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the fastener showing the position of the handle as the heater door is being opened. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the fastener showing the heater door in position so that the fastener can' engage and close the door by a' downward movementof the handle. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the fastener showing the position of the handle when the door is about to be closed.
In the drawings 7 represents an ordinary refrigerator heater door of usualconstruction, though it will be apparent that any ordinary-form of door may be used.v
i Specication of Letters Patent. "Application filed October 11, 191,1..
accompanying draw-l showing va hea-ter- Patented May 6, 1913. -ser1a1'N0.c54,195.
8 is a door post. Y y 9, 9, are door Stiles, 10 the outer, door sheathing, and 11 the inner door sheathing.
12, 12 are door hinges fastened to the door 7 by means, preferably screws 13, and also similarly fastened to the doorfpost'S.
14 is my door fastenerin which thefinenb` ber 15 is a'keeper, the member 16 a .handle or lever, and the memb'er`17 lafba'r 'for lse#- curing the handle 16fwhe'n. the door'7 is in 6b a vclosed position.` The keeper 15' is preferably attached to the door post opposite the unhinged sid of the ldoor 7- by' means, preferably bolts 18, provided with a head 19 and a nut 20. vided with a slot 21- opening ,towardfthe door 7 for receiving a portion of t-he handle 16- hereinafter described. The handle or lever 16 is secured to the door 7 by means, preferably the bolt 22, provided'at its outer` 75 end with a head 23, and its inner end with a screw lthread and nut'24. The said" lever is provided with a perforation 25`-through which in preferable construction the thimble 26 is passed, the said thimble being pro- 8`0 vided atits inner end with a flange 27 extending -around the means, preferably the bolt 22, and acts as a Washer between thef said door 7 'and the lever handle 16.
In referableconstruction the `bolt 22 is 85 provi 'ed' with a washer 28 at its headfand the said bolt 22 passes through said washer and thimble 26 and through the door 7, thereby providing a bearing upon which the said lever 16 may be turned. The lever 90 or handle 16 is provided near the endof its attachment to the doorwith a worm like blade 29, the helix4 ofthe worm being ar-` ranged so that when the shaft 30 of the le-. ver 16 is raised the end 31 of the blade 29 95' will en'gage within the slot 21 when thedoor 7 is partially opened, as illustratedi-n Fig. 5. The slot 21,is preferably'inclined'dnwardly 'in its direction from the 1ower-por tion of the same so as to permit a substantially perfect engagement between the outer,- side of the said slot 21 and the blade l29 of the lever 16. The outer end of the shaft-'30 of the lever 16 is preferably provided withan outwardly turned flange 32, which is preferably provided with a perforation 33. The bar 17 1s preferably laced along a portion of the arc describe by the end of the shaft 30, being secured to the door 7 by means, preferably the screws 34, the said bar The'keeper 15 is pro- 70 f having Ialong its lengt-l1 an outwardly projecting flange or rib 35, provided with perforations 36, and s o arranged that .the end of the shaft 30 may be secured to the said bar 17 by means, preferably the padlock 37,
K passed through the perforation 33 of the flange 3Q, and one of the perforations 3G of the flange or rib 35.'
From, the foregoing descriptionV the advantages ,of my improved structure. will be apparent in that tightly fitting doors, such as heater doors of railroad refrigerator cars, may be easily and tightly closed and securely fastened.
I claim:
1. A door fastener comprising a slotted keeper, a lever, a ribbed bar and means oi" securing said lever to said bar, the said lever being providedat oneend With a Worm like blade for engagement in the slot of said keeper, and'at the other end With a perforated flange; the rib of said .bar being perforated for the reception of the said means to secure the said lever to the said bar.
2. A door fastener comprising a slotted keeper, a perforated lever, a thimble within the perforation of said lever, and means of attachment passing through said thimble, the said lever having` aworin. likeblade for engagement in the slot of said keeper.
3. A door fastener comprising a slotted keeper, a lever and a thimble passing through said lever, the said lever being provided with a Worm like flange .tor engagement in the slot of the keeper, and the said 13 thimble being provided with a liange at its inner end. I s l STACY Bf HASELTINE.'
