ALBERT W. SWENDER, OF CARROLL, IOWA.
CHIMNEY-CA1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 21, 1911.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Serial No. 645,073.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. SWENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carroll, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Ghimney-Cap, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chimney caps, its object being to provide a metallic cap which can be quickly and accurately adjusted to chimney tops of different sizes and which cannot become accidentally displaced, said cap including means whereby a pipe can be readily connected to the chimney.
A further object is to provide a cap of this type which not only constitutes an efficient connection between a chimney and a pipe to be extended thereabove, but also serves efficiently to bind together the bricks or other elements of which the top portion of the chimney is constructed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :-Figure-1 is a plan view of the cap. Fig. 2 is a section on line A-B Fig. 1 and showing the cap in position on a chimney. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cap. Fig. A is a section on line (1-D Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a plate, preferably rectangular and having a central opening 2 surrounded by an upstanding tubular extension 3 adapted to be engaged by a metal stack.
Grooves 4: are formed in the lower face of the plate 1 and extend diagonally, there being a longitudinal slot 5 formed within the plate and above each of the grooves, the outer end of each slot being widened, as indicated at 6. The grooves 4 are adapted to receive slides 7 extending from the angles of L-shaped jaws 8. These jaws extend downwardly from the slides 7 and can be of any desired size.
An ear 9 extends upwardly from each slide and is of greater width than the slot 5 although the widest port-ion 6 of the slot is sufficiently large to permit the ear to be inserted therethrough. Said ear has a neck or reduced portion 10 adapted to slide within the slot 5, the ear lapping the walls of the slot so as to prevent it from being withdrawn downwardly from said slot. A bolt 11 is provided for each of the slides, these bolts being extended radially from the extension 3. Each bolt has a head 12 at its inner end and that portion of the bolt adjacent the head is angular in cross section so as to engage a corresponding opening in the extension 3 and thus be held against rotation. The bolts 11 are loosely engaged by the ears 9 and each bolt is, furthermore, engaged by an adjusting nut 13 adapted to bear against the ear 9.
In applying the cap to a chimney, the ears 9 are first inserted through the widened outer ends 6 of the slots 5, after which said ears are shifted longitudinally of the slots, slides 7 being thus supported within the grooves 4. Bolts 11 are inserted into the openings in the extension 3 and through the ears 9 after which nuts 13 are placed in engagement with the bolts. The cap is then placed on the chimney, plate 1 resting on the top thereof while the jaws 8 slide over the corner portions of the chimney. Nuts 13 are then screwed along the bolts 11 so as to shift the ears 9 toward the extension 3, this resulting in the slide 7 also shifting inwardly and pulling the jaws therewith. Said jaws will therefore be clamped firmly upon the corner portions of the chimney and will operate not only to tie the top portions of the chimney together but also to securely attach the cap to the chimney.
What is claimed is A chimney cap including a base plate, a tubular extension, said plate having radial grooves in one face, slides within the grooves, the lower faces of the slides and plate being in the same plane, jaws depending from In testimony that I claim the foregoing the slides, radially extending adjusting as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signascrews projecting from the tubular extenture in the presence of two witnesses.
sion, means upon the slides for slidably en- ALBERT W. SWENDER. gaging said screws, and means engaging the Witnesses: screws to shift the slides toward each other HUBERT W. SWENDER,
to bind the jaws upon a chimney. FRANK J. Ross.
