N E STATE-S i LOUIS S. MATTOX, OF PLAINFIELD, N JERSEY.
'.rnAINLCoNTRoLLEn.
To all wLom, t may concern: A
I citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Unionand AState of New Jersey,' have invented new and useful Improvements in Train-Controllers, of
4which' the following is a specification.
This invention relates 4to devices'ffor automatically .stopping trains and its object is to provide tripping means applied to the trackand put in action by an attendant or otherqualified party to -operate certain is shut off and lthe brake is set forth in the drawings,
end of a locomotive showing the devicefor operating the throttle and brake applied 2 is a elevation. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of thetrack showing the means for operating the trip. Fig. 5. isa plan view Fig. 6 is a detail view 'partly in is 'a modified view of the trip operator. l
. The device isv adapted to'be located wit-h in therails of a track and preferably adjacent to one of the rails and is supplied with' compressed air or other similar means con tained in a tank 10 and adapted to pass through a pipe 11 to' supply oneor more cylinders 12 in which a piston works and is adapted to 'l be vforced backward carrying with it the piston 13 and connecting rod 14,
-'the latter bengpivoted to a lever 15 in- 16 secured to the ties. 17 pivoted to the closed within a bo'x The box 16 has a cover i box at 18 and is adapted' tol occupy a horizontal position'or to be thrown up and inthrough which the rod 14 operates and when the air pressure is removed the .weight of the top will carry the lever 15 downward' and pull the piston forward.
At one side of a frame' 20 having a lever 21 whose. come in contact with lower end` is adapted to the inclined face 'of .the box top 17 and beV swung backward.
Normally the top end of this lever 21 supportsl a plunger 22 adapted to slide in the frame 20 and lforcev downward by a spring Louis S. MA'r'rox, a'
locomotive whereby the.:
side view of the trip.
The for? the locomotive is secured pivoted at its lower end l 23 surrounding'the plunger and confined bei tween the partition 24: and the shoulder'25-fc The upper end of the plunger carries a bar 26 having 'vertical pins 27 which play through a, partition 28 and are adapted to. receive the perforated plates on hooks 29 carried by the'en-ds of cords 30 and-.31. As -will be seen in Fig. 1, the cord 31 'is arranged to connect with the end of a cock 32 which controls the iow of steam from the j boiler to the oylind'ersand which is provided with a spring 33 to close same. lVhen the lever 21- strikes the box top and is thrown toward a horizontal position, the plunger 22 is released and descendscarrying the pins 27 through' the perforations in the partition V29 and allowing the cord 31 to fly loose and the valve 32 is then closed by means'iof a spring33, thus shutting off the steam supi ply to the cylinders. The cord 30 controls a valve 31 in the air brake supply pipe 35 and when the. hook 29 at the end of cord 30 is released this valve is opened automatically andthe air supply is furnished to the brake cylinder l36 and the brake supply. It will thus be seen that this operation of shutting off the steam and applying the brake is practically simultaneous and it is done auto`- matically and needs the assistance of none 1 of the train hands when the inclined top is in its operative position.
In Fig.l 7 is shownfa box with the usual top which is adapted Yto be lthrown by means of a rod or cord-38 whichmaybe attachedl toa switch lever or other device `which is .vp used in-connectionwith railroads and adapted vto be operated on certain occasions. When `used in connection with a switch lthrowing lever, the rody 38 'maybe operated when the switch is-thrown to elevate the box top 17 and stop vor decrease train traveling in `that direction.
Itis obvious that t-he parts may .wise Varranged and modified without depart-- ing fromv the essential features above described.
'What' Iclaiin asfnew and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a locomotive controller, the combination of a self closing throttle valve, a self closingfairbrake valve, a vertical spring pressed ,plunger having pins at. its upper end, an element connected at'one end to the self closing throttle valve and havingits op posite end vde tachably .connected to one of be otherv a5A i the speed of 'a 'l the pins, a second element connected at one to the self closing air brake valve and hpving' its opposite end det-achably connected to another of said pins, a trip below theplunger arranged for holding the plun- 5 ger 1n an elevated posit-ion against the action Vof its spring, andan obstruction on the road `f Abed adapted to be 'arranged tostrike the trip and permit the plunger to descend under the action of its springe-nd thereby cause 1`o the pins of the plunger to disconnect from lsaid first and second namedelements.
2. In a train controller, the combination' with a self closing throttle valve, of anair brake valve adapted to close automaticallyV 15 a frame carried by the locomotive, a plunger having pins at its upper end, a cord for conneting one of the pins with the air brake vulve to hold it open and having at ono und :i ring fitting over the pin, a second cord con necting the other pin with the throttle valve to hold it open and having at oneV end a ring fitting over the said other pin, a spring forcing the plunger downward," a trip beneath the plunger to hold it in its|elevated position, and an obstruction on the track 25 in presence of two witnesses.
LoUIs s. 'Marron adapted to .throw 'the trip to release the Witnesses:
