Description

UNITED STATES :M PsovsMEN-r IN SM'UT-MILLS.
Specification forming part Vof Letters Patent No. 105.9951',l dated-August 2, 1870.V
To all whom .it may concern:
ABe it known that I, WILLIAM CARROLL THoMPsoN,'of the `county of Williamson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and I Eusefu'l Improvement in Smut-Mills; and I do hereby declare 'that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the Vaccompanying drawing, and to the yletters of reference marked thereon.
4'Ihenature of my invention consists in proa-znill with circular box, made of iron, I.
and frame `made of anysuitable material, but more especially in the ribs or projections on Vthe insideof the box, against which the arms ofthe center are made to revolve rapidly, they being made to work nearly close, so that no grain can pass through Without being j thoroughly `cleansed from smut, dust, or other matter. f
The .drawing represents a sectionalelevation withone'side left out, in order to show more clearly the `internal arrangement. To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describeits construction and operation by reference to the drawing, in which A is a'circular'box, made of iron, and held together by means ofthe bolts I I II, through 4 the flanges on. the outside. v i I B, is the hopper through which-themachine is fed.
E E E are ribs or projections cast on the inviside of both sides of the box A.
G 'is thehnb of the center or beater, which is also 'made of iron. v. Y
D D D D are the arms or beaters, whichareV so made as to Work nearly close to the ribs E E E E E, so that no grain can passbetween without beingthoronghly cleansed, by-means of the rapid motion of the machine when in operation.
F is the frame on which the machine rests,
and is made of Wood or any othersuitable Ina-A terial.
AGr is the pulley and shaft by which the ma-A chine is'operated. A
Having thus fully described the construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe its operation, which is simply that of putting the machine in motion by .means of a' belt on pulley G, after which feed it by pouring the grain into hopper B, which 'conducts it into the box A, `Where it is thoroughly cleansed by the action of the beaters or arms DD D D.V
Therefore What Ifclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is#- The ribs or projections E E E E E, on theinside of the box A, the center C, and the beaters or arms D D D D, in combination With the ,box A, the frame F, and the shaft and pulley G, when arranged, constructed, and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM CARROLL Thon-reos.
