COMBINATION HANDLE AND LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
llatented Apr. 22, 1913.
To all whom it m (ry concern.
' Be it known that I, JAY B. Srooxnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Santa Monica, in the county of Los Angcles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Handles and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination handles and latches for looks or the like, such as are used in or on doors or the like, particularly of that class or description wherein the usual knob provided thereon is eliminated, and a handle with a latch is provided with which to operate the latch bolt of the lock.
in eliminating the knob with which the latch-bolt is usually operated, and in order to produce an eifeetive and economical handle in substitution for the knob, it is especially found desirable to provide the handle with a latch operatively mounted therein.
One of the chief difliculties in providing a combination handle and latch of the character stated, in which it is more particularly desired to 0 erate the latch, and move the door or the ike, at one and the same time, by grasping the handle in the usual manner, and pulling or pushing the door or the like in the normal way, is to provide the latch operating means so that the same is inter changeable and subject to use 1n locks of various difierent sizes, in different doors.
.An object of the invention is to provide a latch-lever operating latch, neatly and compactly embodied within the door handle or the like, which can be quickly and conveniently detached from the lock of a certain size in one door, and operatively connected to a lock of relatively larger or smaller size in another door.
Another object of the invention is to provide a latch mounted in a handle so'thata comparative small hand is capable of operating the latch, for instance, ladies or very small children, can operatethe latch by simply using one hand with which to pull or push the door or the llke, by grasping hold of the handle in the usual manner.
With the above and other objects in view, in additiOn to which may be added relative simplicity, and inexpensiveness of construction, and organization, and positiven'ess' and efficiency inoperation, the invention consists of the novel provision, construction, and
relative arrangements of parts, and combination of parts, members, and features, all as hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and finally pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings are illustrative of the invention.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the lock-plate of a door, showing a handle on the plate, and the preferable construction of the invention as embodied within the handle; Fig. 2 is a side elevation exteriorly showing the same parts as seen in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view to an enlarged scale, showmg the eccentrically arranged lever with which to operate the latch-lever of locks of the several sizes. Fig. 4 is a sectional view to an enlarged scale, taken on line X -'X of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged fra mentary view of the knob-seat and the late i-bolt of an ordinary lock; Fig. 6 is a view to an enlarged scale, of the latch-handle and latcharm, taken on line XX of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings. With particular reference to the draw- 1ngs-, the numeral 10 designates an ordinary surface-plate or escutcheon, and 11 is a handle used in substitution for the ordinary knob with which to open or close the door or the like, on, in, or to which the handle is connected. The handle 11 is held in place on the "outside of the surface-plate 10, as by the integral bolt 12 which extends through sald surface-plate and is engaged by a washer 13 and a nut 14 on the inside of the surface-plate. The circular spacing plate 15 is-located on the bolt 12 intermediate the hillltdle and the outer edge of the surfacep a e.
The handle 11 is hollowed out or recessed preferably as shown at 16, and therein is located the latch lever 17 comprising the longarm or finger-piece 18 and the short-arm or lever arm 19 which is fulcrumed in the hollow portion 16 as at the bosses 20, by the pint-1e 21. The long-arm 18 near the fulcrum 21 is provided with a lug 22 projecting toward the inner-wall 23 of. the recess 16, and on the inner-wall 23 is a similar lug 94, said lugs 22 and 24 being provided to respectively engage the ends of the spring 25. The finger-piece projects slightly with out the recess 16 between the inner part of the handle and the surface-plate 10.
vided for the purpose of permitting the end or knob 31 of the lever arm 19, and the shortarm 32 of the bell crank 33 to operate therein in a vertical plane. The bell crank 33 is fulcrumed between the lugs 30 as at the bolt 34, and is provided with a long-arm 35, the same being thicker than the short arm 32 and adapted to co-act with or actuate the latch-lever 36 of a door lock as 37, whichv in turn operates the latch-bolt of the door.
Particular attention is given the bell-crank 33, for it is desired to provide the hole 34* eccentric to the common center thereof, so that it niay be used in locks of various sizes by simply inverting it. The operation of the invention is eX- tremely simple, and a brief description thereof follows :The bell-crank 33 is arranged and fulcrumed intermediate the lugs 30 as hereinbefore described, with the short-arm 32 thereof projecting into the orifice 29, and is designed to engage with the end 31 of the lever-arm 19 which contacts therewith on the upper part of said short-arm 32. The lever 1 being fulcrumed at 21 and held normally as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by the spring 25, and as the finger-piece 18 is approximately three times the length of the lever-arm 19, therefore the finger-piece 18 may be pressed into the recess 16 by simply grasping the handle and as said finger-piece 18 is pressed into thehandle the end 31 bears downwardly on the bell-crank 33, thereby creating an upward movement of the latch-lever 36, which In turn operates the latch-bolt of the lockby withdrawing the same from within the striking-plate not shown in the door sash, and when the finger-piece 18 is again free, it will be quickly returned to its normal position by the pressure of the spring 25. I I Obviously various changes may .be made in the construction and organization of the parts and combination of parts constituting the lHYGIltlOD, without departing from, or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- entz- 1. A door handle or the like, comprising the surface-plate having an eccentric bellcrank pivoted therein; a recessed handle on the surface-plate, a latch-lever fulcrumed in the recess, with the finger-piece projecting slightly therefrom; a spring in the recess -normally projecting sald finger-piece; and
an arm of said latch-lever in engagement with the bell-crank substantially as set forth.
2. A .door handle or-the like, comprising the surface-plate having an eccentric bellcrank pivoted therein; a recessed handle on the surface-plate; a latch-lever comprising the lower-arm and the finger-piece, fulcrumed in .the recess slightly .protruding'without said recess; and a spring in the recess in engagement with the finger piece; said leverarm being in contact with the inner arm of the bell-crank to move the latch-lever of a lock when the finger-piece is moved inwardly in gripping the handle, substantially as described.
3. In a door handle or the like the combination with a recessed handle and a surfaceplate; of a latch-lever comprising a leverarm and a finger-piece and being pivoted in said recess; an eccentric bell-crank pivoted within the surface-plate and having a shortarm projecting within the recess adapted to co-act with the lever-arm; and a spring in the recess in engagement with the fingerpicce to normally project the same slightly without the recess and intermediate the han- I dle and surface-plate as set forth.
4. In a door handle or the like, the combination with a su'rfaceplate; of a handle fastened on the surface-plate; a recess in the handle; a latch-lever.comprising a fingerpiece and a lever-arm, and fulcrumed in the recess; an eccentric bell-crank pivotally fulcrumed in the surface-plate, and contacting with the lever-arm of the latclrlever; and a spring in the recess in engagement with the finger-piece, to restore it to normal position when released'from pressure with the fingers, substantially as described.
5. In a door handle or the like, the combi-v nation with a handle having a recess thereln of a latch-lever comprising a lever-arm and a. finger-piece, and pivoted in the recess; a knob on the end of the lever-arm; a surfaceplate on which the handle is fastened a bell crank eccentrically mounted in the surfaceplate, partially projecting within the recess, and adapted to co-act with the lever-arm knob; and a spring in the recess in engage ment with the finger-piece to normally project the same without the recess, and between the handle and the surface-plate substantially as and for the purpose described.
.In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
JAY B. SPOONER.
