Description

i v .UNITED STATES PATENTN OFFICE? ivI'YRoN n. KNAPP, or BAY CITY, MIoEIeAN.
IMPROVED FLUTINGAND SAD IRO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,953.2 dated August 2, 1870.
To all whom fit may concern.-
Beit known that "I, MYRoN H. KNAPP, of Bay City, inthe county of Bay and State of Michigan, haveV 'invented 'new and useful Combined Flnting and. Sad MIron; and I do (leclare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of rreference marked thereon, and being a part of this specication, in which-l- Figure lis a side. elevation of my combined dating and sad iron closed. Fig. 2 is a simi- Ylar view, showing it opened to receive the fabric to be tinted 5 and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation et' the device closed. I
Similar` letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each gure i The nature ot` my invention relates to the combination, .with a sad-iron, of a lnting device making part ot said lsad-iroinand in such' a manner that either maybe used, as desired. The invention consists in constructing the sad-iron in halves, divided horizontally, and hinged together at their front ends, With their rear inner faces jtiuted, as hereinafter shown and described; in adevfice l'or securing the parts together when in use .as a sad-iron; and in the general arrangement ot' its various parts, as hereinafter more fully shown and set forth. In the drawings,A A represent'the top and bottom halves ot'a sad-iron constructed in the f usual form, but divided horizontally, as shown, and pivoted to each other at B.
f O is. a handle ot' the ordinary type, attached to the upper section.
u are corrugations or tintes formed on and projecting downward from the rear haltof the inner face of th upper section'of the iron, in-
terlocking with similar tintes, u', projecting upward from the lower section. A transverse channel or groove, b, is formed across the sections at the head of the tintes for thereception ofthe hem of the fabric being tinted. 'The sec-V tions are held together at the rear end'hy a pin,`c, inserted through a pair-of overlapping tlntes, as shown in Fig. 3 or anyr other suit-v able device may be employed for the'purpose in lieu thereof, such as is shownin Figs. 2 and 3, consisting ot' a stud projecting from the lower up through the upper section,(an,d a hook on the upper section passing through an eye in the head of the stud.'
The operation ofthe device, Whennsed to iiute any fabric capable of heilig tinted, will be readily understood, While its efticiency as a sad-iron is not impaired. Byits useatlutingiron is always ready heated tor use at the-time it is most needed-t'. e., while the fabric is being ironed.
I do not intend to contin'e myself' tothe precise construction ot the device as shown, as the same may be hinged at one side, may7 have" transverse instead ot longitudinal flutes or corrugatio'ns, and may be constructed of other material than iron.
` What I claim as my invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The construction of a sadiron in two sections, A A', hinged together, and provided with corrugations or flutes a a', in such a man-J ner that the device may be used both as a tinter andsad-iron, substantially as described.
' y MYRON H. KNA'PP.
