To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Side-Delivery Dump-Body, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to side delivery bodiesfor coal wagons and the like, one of the objects of the invention being to provide means whereby the contents of the body can be discharged from either side thereof.

A further object is to provide closures constituting continuations of the bottom of the body and which, when lowered, constitute means for directing the contents of the body from the body.

A further object is to provide means for moving the closures upwardly to their normal positions.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter clescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.-

In the accompanying drawings the pre-' ferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through a portion of a wagon body having the present improvements combined therewith, the closures being shown in their normal positions. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 and showing one of the closures lowered to discharge the contents of the body from one side thereof.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of a wagon body having a transverse opening 2 in the bottom thereof, there being inclined plates 3 or the like extending upwardly from the ends of the opening 2 and constituting means for directing the contents of the body into the opening.

Secured to the bottom of the body 1 and extending transversely thereof are the walls 4 of oppositely extending chutes, the corresponding walls of the two chutes merging one into the other. Each chute has a bottom 5 inclined downwardly and outwardly,

the bottoms of the two chutes being spaced apart as shown. The outer ends of the chutes are normally closed by means of gates 6 which can be connected thereto in any suitable manner. A shaft 7 is supported under the meeting portions of the two chutes and loosely mounted on this shaft are independent closures 8 extending close to the walls of the respective chutes and adapted, when raistd, to lap and contact with the lower faces of the bottom plates or sections 3 overhanging the chutes in which the closures are mounted. When the closures are thus elevated they constitute practically continuations of the bottom sections 3. The 010- sures can be supported in these raised positions by means of latches or bolts 9 slidably supported upon the bottom faces of the sec tions 3 and having operating rods 10 connected to them and extending beyond the sides of the body 1, these rods constituting means whereby the bolts can be shifted for the purpose of releasing the closures 8.

An arm 11 is mounted to swing on the shaft 7 and movable therewith are oppositely extending lifting fingers 12 normally disposed within the space between the bottoms 5 of the chutes and with their upper edges in alinement with the upper faces of said bottoms. An actuating rod 13 is provided with a forked terminal 14 adapted to detachably engage a lug 15 extending from the arm 11. This rod 13 projects beyond either side of the body and has a handle 16 at its free end whereby it can be easily grasped and manipulated.

As heretofore pointed out the closures 8 are normally supported by the bolts or latches 9 so as thus to hold the contents of the body 1 out of the chutes. The doors 6 are normally closed. Vhen it is desired to discharge the contents of the body from the right side thereof, the rod 10 at the right side of the body is pulled outwardly so as to withdraw the bolt 9 from under the closure 8 engaged thereby. Said closure will thus swing downwardly onto the bottom 5 of the chute thereunder and the contents of the body will, therefore, gravitate through the opening 2 and along this lowered closure 8 to the closed door 6 at the discharge end of the chute into which the contents have been delivered. By then opening the door 6 the contents of the body will be discharged. After the body has been emptied, the rod 13 can be placed in engagement with the lug foregoing operation is repeated at the left side of said body.

From the foregoing it will be apparent that it is necessary to employ but a single lifting means for shifting the two closures vto their elevated positions and it will be seen that said lifting means can be actuated from either side of the body.

What is claimed is 1. A side delivery dump body having an opening in the bottom thereof, oppositely extending chutes under the body and adapted to communicate with the opening, sepa rately movable closures mounted to swing about a common axis below the center of the opening, a rocking element, means for actuating the same to elevate either one of the closures against one of the end walls of the opening, and means for locking the closure in such elevated position.

A side delivery dump body having an opening in the bottom thereof, oppositely extending chutes under the body and adapted to communicate with the opening, a pivot shaft extending transversely of the chutes at their inner ends, separately movable closures pivotally mounted on said shaft and movable within the respective chutes, said closures being adapted when lowered, to rest upon the bottoms of the respective chutes, means mounted to rock upon the shaft for elevating either of the closures across the inner end of the chute and against one end wall of the slot, and means for looking the closure in elevated position.
