Description
B. STASSANO;
v ELEG'TRIG FURNACE.
APPLICATION nun) NOV. 29, 1912.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
ERNESTO STASSANO, OF TURIN, ITALY.
ELECTRIC FURNACE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed November 29, 1912. Serial No. 734,092.
'1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EnNns'ro STASSANO, residing at Turin, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Electric Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention-consists in improvements in electric furnaces, and has for its object improved means for suspending the furnace chamber, whereby a simple oscillatory movement of the chamber gives rise to a complete stirring of the molten mass of metal contained in the chamber.
In my U. S. Patent No. 1,02%657 of April 30, 191:2, the suspension of. the chamber was effected by mounting the casing, which surrounds the chamber, by means of a pair of.
pivots, 'on a ring which in turn was mounted on fixed supports through the agency of a second pair of pivots positioned at 90 with respect to the first named pivots. This arrangement is, however, attended with ditliculties, which are obviated by the construction which is the subject of this invention.
On the accompanying drawing is shown by Way of example, one form of construction according to this invention, Figure 1 being an elevation of an improved mounting for the furnace chamber; Fig. 2 an elevation at right angles to that in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a plan showing the transverse member of the suspension device.
In the drawings, the casing 1 which envelops thefurnace chamber, carries two fixed stirrups 9 constituting at their upper parts'supports 10 for the reception of the pivots 11 on the end of a cross member 12 having on its sides other pivots 11 situated at right angles to pivots 11 and mounted in bearings 13 which are carried by an upper cross member or appropriate framework. The suspension device thus comprises a single bar provided with two pairs of pivots, one pair being at its ends and one pair on its sides; this bar may be of simple construction and the necessary strength for it .is easily calculated.
An oscillatory or turning movement may be communicated to the chamber by means of the tooth wheel 17 which carries a part 19 adjustably'mounted or otherwise and provided with a projection'15 that fits into a ring or socket 16 fixed to the bottom of the casing 1. The wheel 17 may be actuated by a pinion 18 driven by a suitable motor.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by U. S. Patent is 1. In an electric furnace, a melting chamber, a suspension member having two pairs of pivots at 90 from each other, arms for suspending the melting chamber to a pair of opposite pivots of the suspension member, supports for mounting the other pair of pivots of said suspension member, and means for imparting a circular conical inotion'to the axis of the melting chamber.
2. In an electric furnace, a closed melting chamber arranged .in a casing, a. suspension member having two pairs of pivots at 90 from each other, arms for suspending the said casing to a pair of opposite pivots of the suspension member, supports for mounting the other pair of pivots of said suspension member, and means for imparting a circular conical motion to the axis of the melting chamber.
3. In an electric furnace, a melting chamber arranged in a casing, an upper cross bar, two pivots at the ends of said cross bar, suspension arms mounted on said pivots and connected to the casing of the melting chamber, two pivots on the sides of the said cross bar and forming a right angle with the other pivots, supports for mountingsaid pivots and means for imparting a circular conical motion to the axis of the melting chamber.
4. In an electric furnace, a melting chamber, a suspension member having two pairs of pivots at 90 fromeach other, arms for suspending the melting chamber to a pair of opposite pivots of the suspension member, supports for mounting the other pair of pivots of said suspension member, an arm depending axially from the lower end of the chamber and engaged by a rotating member in an eccentric point of said rotating member.
5. In an electric furnace, a closed melting chamber arranged in a casing, a suspension member having two pairs .of pivots at 90 from each other, arms for suspendmg the said casing to a pair of opposite pivots of the suspension member, supports formounting the other pair of pivots of said suspension member, an arm depending axially from the lower end of the casing'of the melting chamber and engaged by a rotating member'in an eccentric point of said rotating member.
6. In an electric furnace,-a melting chamher arranged in a casing, an upper cross bar, 1
two pivots at the ends of said cross bar, suspension arms mounted on said pivots and connected to the casing of the melting chamber two pivots on the sides of the said cross ban and forming a right angle with the other pivots, supports for mounting said pivots, an arm depending axially from the lower end of the casing of the melting chamber and engaged by a rotating member in an eccentric point of said rotating member.
7. An electric furnace flexibly suspended from above, and means for imparting a rotary oscillation to said furnace.
8. An electric furnace flexibly mounted in a support, and means for circularly ()S(.lllatingsaid furnace so that its axls describes I a cone the apex of which is above said furnace.
9. An electric furnace flexibly suspended 20 10. An electric furnace flexibly mounted in a support, and means for so oscillating said furnace that its axis describes a cone the apex of which is in said support.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
