`To all whom t may concern MASSAGING IMPLEMENT.
:Be it known that I, RAYMOND lV. Giiiririi-i, acitizen `ci the United States, and resident ofvMilwaukee, in the county ofMilwaiikee *and* State of'lVisconsin, have invented cery tain newand useful Improvements in Mas saginglinplements; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a `full, clear, and exact description thereof.l y
`My invention consists` inlwhat is-hereiii particularly set forth `with'reference to the accompanying .drawing fand `pointed out in the claims of thisfspecifieation, its object being 4to sinipliivandfcheap'en -the vacuum Vibrator massaging implement specified in n'iy LettersPatent- No. 996924, granted July `The drawing represents a centra-l 4longi-` J tudinal section ofA onelof'lmy improved vacu# um vibratorsjhaviii'g arsiiction-ciip applicatorapplied thereto;
i lR,eferfrihg by numerals to the drawings, 3
l indicates,amcylindriealcasing having heads 4 'in snap-fit thereonf-or"otherwise detachably secured thereto.; Thefcasing incloses a cyl- "iiider 5 provided With'lugs 6, and by means of screws 7 engaging said luge,` the cylinder is detachablyV secured in "said, casing.- 'tendingfronrthe cylinderr'midway of itsl ends and through anfopening ,inlthe casing, is a hollow boss 8, the-same being the exhaast of said cylinder, ln'screW-threadconnection" with the boss fis a,preferablyshoul-` dered end of a rigid `pipertlthat extends through a handle 10V of suitable material, this handle being threaded or otherwise 'suitably fitted on said, boss. y -Y In practice the pige 9,is"detachably` coupled to a iexible tu e 11 leading from a suction generator notsh'own but common in the art to which my invention relates. Oppo-` ,site its 'boss 8, the cylinder is provided with an 'outer lug 12 havitigintrsecting bores 131. and 14,` at right-angles; "thel bore 14 being coiintersunk. VThe bored lug` 12 constitutes the inlet of thecylinder and a hollow boss extension 15.0f said'lug is in line with the bore 13 of thesame. Extending through an l openingin the casing?) `is a cap 16 in screwthread connectionfwith the' boss 15 of the lug 12, andby meansof saidboss 15 and cap 16, a chamber is provided," Seated in the chamber isa woven-wire. strainer 17 for a mass 18 ofsuitable lubricant composition.
14 against preferably interposed airjstraincr- Specification of Letters Patent. l vA'ppiitatimi aieaiuiy s, 1912,` seriai Naroaoes.
Engaging the countersink ofthe lug-bore disks 19, of felt or other-suitable material, is shown the hollow shank 20 of a suction-cup 21` but 'any other form of applicator may be utilized.
A floating piston22 of suitable weightI is guided in the cylinder. The piston is provided with an outer annular preferably V.-i shapedv groove 23 midway 0f its ends, and with a pair of transverse passages 24 that are equi-distant from said groove in opposite directions, each passage being alternately registrable with a cylindenport 25. and the exhaust of the cylinder.` Each of. the piston-passages 24 is intersected by a l counter-sunklongitudinal. bore 26 of the piston, and engaging the countersink ot' each' of these bores `1s a spiral spring 2l'y consti.-y
ratented Apr. 22,191.3.
ftiiting an elastic cushion opposedby a capyhead 28'of the cylinder.4
'In the operation of my vaccumvibrator,
airis exhausted from one end of the cylinder 5 through a bore 2G4 and passage 24 of the piston t en-ln communication with the inlet and exhaust of said cylinder, while at,thef.
said cylinder through a port 25 of the saine then in register with a passage 24 `of saidl piston. The result is a` rapid movement of the piston to the vacuum-end of the cylinder; `whereupon an immediate reverse movement ofsaid `piston takes place, its reciprocation 'same time air is admitted to the other end ofi y being against resistance of the`.elast ie`y cushions that serve, by compression, to" limit thepiston-movement in opposite directionsas welles to render the apparatus practically noiseless.` The` automatic rap'id reci-procation `of the piston effects the-vibrations desired,.its groove 2B being a lead-that prevents cutting off the suction through the cylinder, Aand incidental to the suction, the i lubricant 16 is supplied tosaid cylinder and thepiston in'sii'flicient quantity.
f In the showing, thelower passage 24 and bore 26 offthe piston are for the instant in communication with the inlet and. outlet of the cylinder, the other piston passage and =borelbeing open to the upper air-port 25 of saidv cylinder;V Now as' there is suction through th pipe 9, a quick downward .stroke of thepiston occurs and this stroke is siittcient to bring the upper passage 24 and bore 26 of said piston intocommiinication with the 4inletand outlet of the cylinder, the aforesaidv air port being then closed and the lower air-port of said cylinder open to the lower piston passage .and bore, it being iinder-stood that'saidpiston has considerablel momentum when on. stroke in either direction. There is animmediate reverse stroke of the piston, and continued reciprocation ofthe same as long as the suction through the pipe 9 continues. The path of reciprocation Aof the piston is short, but sufficient to produce the vibrations necessary for mas- 1. .In a vibrator massaging implement,` the combination of a cylinder. having an inlet arid exhaust midway of its ends, as well as ports inu opposite directions fromvsaid inlet and exhaust, the aforesaid inlet being 'forjthe engagement of the. shankof an applicator; and a iioating. piston in the cylinder provided with an outer annular groove midway of its ends, Va pair of Vtransverse passages equi-distant from said groove in opposite directions. and bores intersecting the passages; each passage being intermittently` regstrable I with a cylinder-p ort.
2. In a vibrator. massaging. implement, the ycombination vof a cylinder having an in let and exhaust midway of its ends, as well as ports in opposite directions from said in'- let and exhaust, the aforesaid inlet being-'for the engagement of the shank of'an applicator; andi a floating `piston in `thecylinder provided with an outer annular groove inidway of its'ends,`a pairof transverse passagesV equi-distale: from` said groove in opposite directionsand counter-sunk bores intersecting the passages; each -passage being linter- 'mittently registrable with a cylinder-port,
- an `elastic cushionin the countersink of each of saidbores opposed to a cylinder-head.

4. In a vibrator` massaging implement, the combination of` a cylinderhaving an inlet and exhaust midway o f its ends, as well as ports in opposite directions from said inlet .andl exhaust, the aforesaid inlet being for the engagement of theshankof` an applicator; a'handle having `a bore in register with 'the exhaust aforesaid, and a. floatlng piston inthe4 cylinder provided 'with an outer annular groove midway of its ends, a
pair of transverse passages equirdisjta-nt from said groove .in .opposite directions and bores intersecting. the passages; each pas- -sage beingintermittently regist'rablev with a cylinder-port.
5. In .a vibrator massaging implement;
the combination' ofsa casing', a cylinder fast in the-casing and having an inlet and exv 'haustv midway of its-ends, ,as'jwell as' ports f in oppositev directions fromsaid inlet and exhaust, the ai'oresaidv inlet being Vfor the engagem'entofthe shank of an applicator; and a floating piston in thecylinde'rvprovvided With'an outer lannular groove midway f its ends,'a pair of transverse passages equi-distant from said groove in opposite directions, and bores `intersecting the pas- 6. amvibrator/as-sa-gin'g implement, v.the combination of a casing, a cylinder fast in thek casing and havinganlinlet` and exv haust midway. of its ends, as .well` as ports in` opposite directions from said inlet and exhaust, the 'aforesaid inlet being for ythe engagement' of an applicator; a 'ppeconstif tuting an extension of the eylindenexhaust,
