EDWARD H. SWEELEY, `OF` RICHMOND ,HILL NLEW` YORK.
BORING-BAR.
i ,cuenca To all farli/om it may concern Be it known that l, EDWARD H. Swininnr, ot Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in BoringfBars, of which improvement thc following'is a specification-` My invention `relatesto bars or stocks used for holding metal boring tools, and its object is to provide means whereby boring tools or cut te of large si zeand ample strength may be firmly held in operative position in a boring bar, with the capacity of awide range of adjustment for boring `holes of different desired diameters, and theifurther capacity of convenient and expeditious removal and replacement, as may, from time to time, be desired.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the aocompanyingdrawings: Figure l is a longitudinal central section through a boring bar and its accessories illustratingan application of my invention; Fig. 2, a View, partly in elevation and` partly inflection, 1n a plane at right angles to Fig. l, ofthe same; Fig. 3, a transverse section, on the line t a of Figs. l and 2; Fig. 4:, a side view, partly in. section, and on anenlarged scale, oi an adjusting nut; and, Fig. 5, an end view of the same. i
The boring bar in which my invention is herein exemplified, comprises, similarly to those heretofore known, a cylindrical body,`
l, and a :truste-conical ortapered shank, 1", adapted to be secured in a socket on the end of a spindle, turret, or other member which carries the boring bar. A pair of roughing cutters, 2, i2,` and a pair of finishing cutters, 3, 3, are fitted in transverse slots, located one above the other, in the body, 1,`of the boring bar, the cutters contacting with the sides and oneend of the slots, Without the interposi- ,tion of sockets or holders, and being secured therein and adjusted from and toward the iaxis thereof, for the boring of holes of greater or less diameters, as desired, under the construction and in the manner which will now be described.
The transverse slot in which each of the pairs of cutters is placed, is made of suiiicient depth, that is to say, in its dimension 'in the axial plane of the boring bar, to receive a keyingbloclr, et, which abuts against the adjacent pair of cutters, preferably,as shown, through the intermediation of short Specication of Letters Patent.
l Application filed January`11,`1912.
Patented Apr. 22,;1913f Serial No. 670,540.
bearing blocks, d". whiclrare pivoted to the lrcying block by pins, 4, the object of which 1, 1s to provlde a truc and accurate bearing of the keying block upon each of the cutters 00` which. it adjoins. The keying block of the` roughing cutters, 2, 2, which are located nearer to the outer or workingend of the boring bar, is forced to a` tight bearing against the cutters, by clamping screws, 5, 05
`to the proper tight bearingagainst them by i a Wedge, (3, which is fitted in a correspondingly tapered slot, 6, extending through the body, 1, adjoining, and at right angles to, the `slot inwhich the cutters, 3, 3, are fitted.`
4rlhe wedge, fits in a recess in the adjacent 76 keying block, et, and is internally threadedto engage a tightening screw, 7, which projects` through a removable cap, 6b, closing one end j of the slot, 6, the screw, 7, beingprov-ided with a head, 7 on its outer end, `which bears 80 on the boring bar, through the intermediation of the cap, 6, and is adapted for thea-pplication of a wrench. The opposite end of the slot is vclosed by a plug, 6.
The` roughing` and finishing icutters arieis expanded and contracted, that is to say," moved outwardly and inwardly from and toward the axial line of the boring bar, .for the purpose of adjustmentfor boringia'oles` of greater or less diameters as may be desired, by adjusting screws, 8, each of which passes through a cylindrical opening inzthe ody ofthe boring bar, adjoining and parallel with the slot therein, in which one of the pairs of cutters is tted, and is provided 96 with right hand and left hand threads, ex-
tending in o osite directions, respectivcl from its mi le to its ends. Said threa s are engaged by correspondingly threaded nuts, 9, 9,` upon each of which there is `1001 formed a lateral lug, 9, which engages a recess or notch, 2*l or 3*,on the adjacent rougliing` cutter, 2, or finishing cutter,3, as the case may bc a direct mortise and tenon en agement of ters bein thereby provided and intermediate connecting means avoided. It will be seen that the longitudinal movement of the nuts. effected by the rotation, in either zdirection, of an adjusting screw, will corre- 110 spondingly move the adjacent cutters outwardly rom, or inwardly toward, the axial The keying the nuts with thelcuti consequence, the
line of the boring bar, lin accordance with the direction of rotation of the adjusting screw. Itl will also' be obvious that the d1- rect and positive engagement of the nuts with the cutters, and the fittingof the cutters .directly in the slotsin which theyA are carried, enables larger and stronger cutters to be used than are n practicable with the sockets `or clamp cutter holders, or the adjustment blocks, of prior practice; lAs -a working range of the bore ing'bar becomes suiciently wide to 4obviate the necessity `of using two bars successively, which-is presented when lthe capacity of the bar is 'limited to cutters `of smaller size.` The adjusting screws are turned by the apy' plicationY of alwrenchto nuts, 10, engaging i ver threads of smaller diameter thanthe main threads, atl and adjacent to the ends ofthe screws, and bearing on flat faces at the ends .of the openings in the body, 1, in'which the a head, 12,y which traverses in a recesslll.-y
the boring bar adjoining the slot ofthe lleting cutter, and bears against a shoulder, 11,on;the adjacent side thereof., The iinishin `cutter is readily removable and adjustale for the diameter of cut required, by proper manipulation of the screw, l2. v The. filleting Icutter `and its accessories, as just described; are not claimed as of mypre'sent invention, vand will formthe subject matter of a divisional application to be filed in due season. K
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-`
1. In a boring tool, the combination of a boring bar, two boring kcutters, fittingin and contacting ldirectly with a transverse .c
slot in said bar and longitudinallymovable in said slot, means for clamping said cutters inadjusted position against one end of said slot, an adjustingscrew'having threads ofl opposite lead and rotatable in a planeparallel withthe cutters, nuts, each engaging 'one of the threads ot' the-adjusting screw and having a lateral lugengaging a recess in the adjacent cutter, and ,anut engaging an end vthread ion the adjusting screw andl bearing laterally on the boringbar.
2. In a boring tool,`the `combination of av boring bar, two boring'cutters fitting ,and c longitudinally lmovable in a `transverse slot 1 in said bar, means for traversing said cuti ters `toward and-from' lthe axial lineof ythe boring bar, a keying block 4bearing lon said i cutters, and a wedge bearing `on and movable transversely' to, the keying block.k
3. In a boring tool, the combination of a vboring bar, two boring cutters tting and longitudinally movable ina transverse slot insaid bar, meansv for traversingsaid cuti ters toward and fromthe axial lineof thev cutters, a wedge fitting `a slot orme'd'in the i 75 l boring bar, a keyin bloekbearing on said boring bar transversely to the keying block and bearingo-n said block, and a tightening screw engaging said wedgeand exerting'its bearingpressure on .the boring'bar. y
