Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed May 20, 191i. Serial No. 628,450.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN W. PER- KIXB, Jr., a. citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jerse have invented certain new and useful improvements in Paper-Roll Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper roll holders.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a paper rollholder for adding and listing machines and, more particularly, for combined adding and typewriting machines having novel means whereby it may be shifted into position for the use of the paper on the platen of the machine when it IS desired to list or add separately from the usual operations on the peaper carried-by the laten and which may readily and quick y swung out of position when it is not desired to use the paper from the roll.
A- further object is the provision of a pa er roll holder which may ber'eadily attac ed to anycombined adding and typewritingmachine, or the like, having novel means whereby it is locked when in operative position so that a' roper degree of rigidity to secure a suitab e positioning and guiding of the paperis maintained when the aper from the roll is' being used and whic vma be swung aside and automatically unlocked by simple manipulation when the'paper from the roll is not desired.
A still further object of the invention is the revision, in a device of the character set orth, of novel means for locking the carriage of the machine so that it cannot shif while the pug pr from the roll holder is teing used on t e platen in an adding operation, or the like, such lockin of the carriage being automatically effects on p0- si'cioning the paper roll holder for use of the paper from the roll thereof.
In the present invention there-is provided a self-contained roll holder and movable parts, all adapted for attachment to an adding and typewriting machine wherein the positioning of the device for-use of the paper from the roll thereof causes locking so that it will be maintained in position, and raising the paper holding part of the attachment will cause automatic unlocking orrelease of the roll holder, thus requiring no attention on the part of the operator other than positioning the device when the paper of the roll thereof is to be used and swinging it aside when its use is not further required.
Having the foregoing objects, and others not specifically mentioned, in view, the invention embodies certain features of construction set forth more fully hereinafter and recited in the appended claims.
In the 'accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is a pers ective of a part of a combined adding and typcwriting machine with the invention applled thereto in position for use; Fig. 2, a similar view with the roll holder dropped downwardly; Fig. 3, a detail side elevation, partly in section, show ing the roll holder in position for use; Fig. 4, a detail rear elevation of a portion of the roll holder when in the position shown in Fi 3;'Fig. 5,-a detail plan of the carriageloc ing device, a portion of the rack hein shown; and Fig. 6, a detail erspective o i the joint between the main rame and the pa er-holding frame, the parts being detacied and showing the position one of the latching arms assumes when the device is inthe osition shown in Fig. 3.
In t e drawings so much of a combined typewriter and adding machine or typewriter with adding attachment is shown as will give a clear understanding of the cooperation of the invention therewith, it being understood that the present invention is attached to the rear part of the frame of the machine.
The rotary platen is shown at S, being mounted in a suitable carriage to travel transversely of the machine and having a rack Cf". The usual papef'table appears at S.
Mounted on the frame of the machine is a guide 47 in which slides a latch B" having a suitable heel B A spring B inter osed between the heel and the gpide 47 an suitably sustained against buc ling by ins 29 afiords means for normally retr cting the tooth of the latch B out of engagement with the rack C.
54 designates a bracket which is suitably secured to the frame of the machine by screws or other fastenings and is provided with u -turned ears having notches 54*. The rol carrier has two arms 55 which are pivoted to the cars by screw pivots l4 and are provided with shoulders 55" ads ted to strike the hastv of the bracket when t e roll latches 58 which are of bell-crank construc-' by a spindle 2 having a head 13 at one end and a-screw tip at the other end, the spindle assing loosely through the hub of one of t e arms 55 and the tip'screwing into the hub of the other arm 55.' The paper roll is loosely mounted on the spindle 2 and the latter is removable from the arms 55 to permit the paper roll to be put on or taken ofi.
Pirated on the hubs of the arms 55 through which passes spindle 2} are the tion, the lower legs being provided with lugs 58 adapted to engage the notches 54c when the device is in its raised osition and therefore lock the entire device in that position, the latches being given a tendency to engage the notches 54" by the s rings 80 which are connected to said late es' and to .thc arms 55. The other angles of the arms 55 are connected and braced by a rod 3,
screws l5 entering the ends thereof.
Swingingly mounted on the rod 3 are the arms 0 the paper guide 57, these arms being provided with hubs each having a flat 15"). The aperguide has a crosspiece 57 over win platen S, and said cross-piece is provided with cushions 91 adapted to sup 'ort' it on thus prevent spratching of the pa r table; Thepapen guide also has a paper ife 90 extending thereacross at its end and connected thereto by screwslfi. The end-of the paper -strip,after passing"around the platen S, passes up between the arms 57* rasped and drawnso that upon being toward" the operator, it will be brought against the knife and readily sevened.
The lower end of each of the arms 55 has a cam 55* one of-which is positioned to ongagc the heel B 'and press the latch B into engagement with the rack C of'the carriage of the machine when the device is in its raised or operative position, and to swing out of the way and release saidlatch to permit the spring 29" to throw the latch out of engagement with the rack C" when as shown in Fig. 1.
the paper roll holder is thrown down, as shown in Fig. 2. The members 55 strike 54" when the roll holder is in raised position,
'iiuarms 58"" of tho latches 58 are adapted to rest upon the hubs 85" at all limos, being drawn against said hubs b the swings 80". Win-n the paper gui o is t ilO\\'|i down to opol'ntive position, as shown .platen S,
ioh the paper from the roll-passes prior to being passed. around the own, and
mosses in 1 and 3, the flats 15* are then under the tips of' the arms 58* so that the lugs 58* are then thrown into the notches 54* by the springs 80* and, consequently, the
entire paper roll holder is locked in operative position. As soon, however, as the erguide 57 is raised, the rounded or a gyindrical parts of the hubs 35 comes unerneath the arms 5583 and raise them, thus releasin, the lugs 58 from the notches'o l and ena ling the entire device to be thrown .backwardly to lowered position, in doing which the cam 55" releases the latch B from the rack C; v
When not desired for use, the attachment lies in the osition shown in Fig. 2. When it is desire to lock the carriage and to add or list numbers on the strip from the paper roll, the entire attachment is drawn up- ,wardly andthe pa er guide brought down upon the aper ta le S, whereupon the paper kni e 9Q- lies immediately over the and the paper is then threaded across the su port 57* and around the platen'S an upwardly under the knife 90 When the items have been printed on the strip, the stri is detached by drawing it against thc'ltni e, and'on lifting the arms '57., the latches 58 a're'released from the notches 54K, whereupon the entire device may be dropped to the rear-of the machine. When the attachment is raised to bring it to the position shown in'Figs. i and 8, the cam 55*, b ressin against the heel 13" causes t e atoh to en age the rack C of the carriage of the ma inc and lock the carriage and platen against movement.
Havinp thus described. my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is: 7
1. A paper hcal ler mounted for shifting, in combination with a movable paper gui e carried thereby, and means for locki'n the paper holder, said locking means eing controlled'by the' movement of the paper guide.
