EDWARD' EMMERS, OF ROYERSFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
WOMANS UNDERGARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Improvement in IVomens Undergarments,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention ,has reference to woniens undergarments and consists of certain improvements which are fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings which forma part thereof. The object of my invention is to provide a construction .of under-vest for .women which, by simple adjustment of the V.shoulder straps, will provide either of two shapes of bust, namely a low V cut'or 'a -high straight front'as maybe desired; and furthermore, will provide a broad or relatively narrower garment at the shoulders to suit persons of different stature.
In embodying my' invention in practical. form, I employ 'a knitted fabric in tubular form, in which the bust portion is cutofl transversel 'to the length ofthe tubular fabric land said fabric further cut in the direction of the length ofthe same to provide four corners each formed by the juncture of a part ofthe transverse'upper-or the longitudinal edges 'formed byv the longi'- tudinal cuts, and-to each of these corners I provide independent shoulder straps, the free ends; of which may be deta'chably` coupled -in pairs in one way to provide a.
garment with straight `bust and back, and another way to form, -of a V cut bust and back,
the arin portions, the straight front and and provide from back portions, sockets below the shoulderl straps.
' More generically, my` invention compre# hends an undervest having its bust and arm` portions divided into four parts by shoulder straps, the alternate or opposlte parts being? inoutline,` and the' four innumber and substantially similar shoulder straps `being terminating in free ends, l l vided with detachable means for coupling' the free ends of the'adjacen't straps in pairs in two ways, whereby the armportions may be converted into the bustan'd back portions the bust line froinf when desired: to Change one shape to another My invention also cemprehends details,"v v y s and one of .laterallyv extending arm.
f the straps Sand 9 are preferably` pro-f.-

`of construction which, together with the features above specified, will be better .una derstood by reference to the drawings', in-v Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved undervest when the shoulder straps are nso coupled as to provide a h igh straiifgiitf bust and back; Fig. -2V is a similar viewy of the same garment when` the shoulder' straps are coupled in `a different way to lower the cutof the bust and give it a V shape; and Fig. 3 isa perspective viewcorresponding to the upper-portion of Fig. l, but` with 'thearm straps uncoupled.
2 is the body ofthe garment and, ordinarily, .isinadev ofl tubular ribbedknitted fabric formed upon a circular yknittingina- Y chine. A Isection of this knitted tube 1s cut transversely to form the straight bust edges 5 and is split on dia-metrically opposite sides to formv the edges xconstituting the lowerparts ofthe arm holes, the said edges 3 meeting at the lower partsv 4, namely those'por- 'tions at the bottom of the slits above mentioned.` -Extending upward from the juncture of'the edges 3 and 5, I provide shoulder straps 6, 7, 8 and 9, these *being four in ,numberand preferably formed of open or `lace worl: 'which ,may be "continued as a border edge alongV the edges 3 and 5 as shown, and in which tapes or ribbons may be threaded. TheV free ends ofthe shoulder straps may be formed of plain fabric, and. these `endsmaybe overla ped and detachably united. by buttons, iiisteners or other devices. --As shown, in Figs. lf-and 2, the free ends of the straps are alternately proyvided with buttons 11 and button'holes 12;
.In Fig. 1, the'straps 6 and 7 are buttoned' together to form ya closed lshoulderstmp Aover one of the arm portions antllv similarly, buttonedftogether to .form the other closed shoulderf's'trap over the other arm portioni It will'also bessen loo that, while the straps 6 and 9 are provided.,
7 and 8 are pro- -w'th buttons', 4-the straps p so that not only vided with button holes, I may the straps .6 and 7 be andthe straps "Band- 9 likewise coupled asa pair (Fig. 1), butstraps and y8 may be lcoupled as a pair 9 coupled as a pair;as shown in Fig. 2, to form arm holes'of the-bustparts 5 and IV bust portions of'th'e arm hole portionsf, 4' 3.
1t will be seen, by comparngFigs. land coupled asl a Vpair and likewise straps', 7 and arm portion lof the-,undervest has been com pletely changedsby the simple act of coupling the shoulder strap portions in different combinations. Not only does the high straight bust' become changed to a -low V out bust, but where the material of the former provided for a full bust, the latter wlll give lav somewhat tighter buststructure but With more fullness under the arms. In
those caseswhere no shoulder straps arede-v sired, or .when using the vest as a corsetcover, the straps 6, 7 8 and 9 arenot coupled, but instead, are turned down so as to' be' invisible and leave the shoulders entirely free, and this t-oo, without having undesirable material under the arms as has hereto.
fore been necessary.
In place of using buttons and buttonholes, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I may employ any other suitable fasteners, such as those used 'upon gloves, etc. This latter is shown in Fig. 3, in which 15 are the male or button portions and 14 th'e female or socket portions. In this case, as in those above'described, the parts 15 are on alternate straps 6 and 9, and the parts 14 on the remaining alternate straps 7 and 8, so that strap 6- may be coupled with either straps 7 or 8, and similarly, strap 9 may be coupled vvith straps 8 or 7., as desired. While it is preferable to provide the straps with fasteners of some kind, such fasteners may be omitted and fancy pins of artistic or oth'er nature may be employed instead, if so preferred.
I have shown my improved undervests in the form I prefer, for general use, but I do not restrict myself to the details, as these may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention. j
Having now describedA my invention, what lI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.- is z-f 1. As an article of manufacture, an undervest for women made of a knitted fabric in tubular form having its upper or bust end cut transversely across the length of the tubular fabric and having said end also cut longitudinally on dinnetrically opposite sides to provide arm portions and four corner portions constituting the junctures of vthe arm portions with the bust and back I' portions, and having said junctures or Ycorner portions provided with independent shoulder straps having free endsto enable said straps to be coupled up in pairs in either of two ways whereby what were arm portions may be made to provide low bust and back portions and the former high bust and back portions be made to become the arm portions.
2. As an article of manufacture, an undervest for women made of a knitted fabric in tubular form having its upper or bust end out transversely across the length of the Itubular fabric and having said end also cut longitudinally on diametrically opposite sides to provide arm portions and four corner portions constituting the junctures of the arm portions with the bust and back portions, 'and having said junctures or co1- ner portion/s provided with independent shoulder'straps having free ends to enable saidI straps to be coupled up in pairs in either of two ways whereby what were arm portions may be made to provide low bust and back portions andthe former high bust and back portions be made to become the arm portions andsaid free ends of the straps provided with fasteners for uniting them in pairs.'
3. As an article of manufacture, an under vest for women having the juncture of the arm portions with the bust and back portions provided with independent shoulder straps having freeends to enable said straps tojbe coupled up in pairs in two ways whereby the arm portions may be made to provide bust and back portions of different shape and the former bust and back portions made to become the arm portions and said free ends of the straps alternately provided with corresponding portions of two part fasteners whereby any strap may be dctachably coupled with either of the next adjacent straps.
4. As an article of manufacture, an under vest for women formed of a tubular knitted fabric lhaving its bust and back portions eut 'on a transverse line to the length of the tube and its arm portions provided by diametrically opposite longitudinal slits, and the juncture of the side edges of the slits .and the transverse bust and back portions provided with, independent shoulder .straps having free edges, said straps adapted to be couple/d in pairs in two ways, to provide a straight high bust and back or a low V bust uand back as desired, and said free ends lof the straps alternately provided witlrcorresponding portions of two part fasteners whereby any strap may be yrletachably coupled with either of the next adjacent straps. i In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
