The .upper portion of one of these segments is clearly shown in Fig. 4. l'
After the completion of the forming operation, when itis desired to contract the former for the withdrawal of the formed body and the positioning of another blank,
the pipe 33 is opened-and liquid under pressure is directed through the pipes 36 and 37 to force the pistons 23 and 22 .toward eachother. 'Each of the wedge- blocks 28 and 29 is provided with a pluralityof arms 41, one ot' these farnis being provided onv each wedge-block for each ot'said segments. Each of thesel armsv 41 is provided with a lug or pin 42 which projectsinto a groove 43 in the wing or liange 2 6 of eaclrsegment. Each 4o't.thesewiiigs 26 is provided with two of these grooves 43, one extending npwardly from vthe lowerA end thereof, into which projects a pin 42011 an arm 41 projecting upwardly from'the lower wedgeblock, and oneon the opposite side of said wing extendlng downwardly from the uplsubstantially the configuration of the exper end thereof, into which projects a pin at the end 'of an arm projectingdownwardly from the upper wedge-block. These grooves are so inclined thatwhen the wedge-blocks are forced together to expand the, segments, these pins 42 follow the courses of the grooves, and when said wedge-blocks are forced away trom each other, these arms and pins have the effect of drawing the-segments toward each other to contract the expander o r former.

and thus generate and apply almost limitless forces, and this in a simple a nd effect-ive manner; second, that substantially the whole of the exterior surface of the blank is exposed to i view dnrln the entire expandlng operation,v
whereby w ien a fracture or a tendency to fracture is noted, due possibly to some imperfection in the metal, theV expanding operation may be instantly terminated and theY blank removed for repair or for strengthening at a weak spot, Whereas if an exterior mold or former is employed a 'fracture would not be discovered until aftercompletion of the forming operation, at which,
time repairs would be much more diiiicult it not at times impossible; third, that while l have rovided a segment-al expander-I have so lnterfitted the segments together as to provide a substantially continuous forming or expanding surface evenvvhen a form is in its most expanded condition, thus preventing the longitudinal ridges which would be likely to be formed if the segments were completely separated from each l other; fourth, that in doing away with an exterior mold or former, l have provided a machine y in which the scale and other refuse matter which falls from the blank during the process of expansion may be removed after each operation without the necessity for the removal oi an exterior casing or the provision of apertures in the lower plate for`v4` the disposal of this scale or refuse; fifth, that i have provided means for utilizing the' hydraulic pressure referred to lfor returning the segments of the expander from their expanded to their most contracted condition,
, thus quickly and easily readjusting the mawhich it appertains, and l therefore do not desire to limit my invention to the specific construction herein shown and4 described.
