FRANKLIN `H. SMITH, OF BURKE, VERMONT.` y
Leners Putative. 105,857, daad July 26, 1870. 1
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY' d MEASURING-PUNNEL.
The Schedule referred tain` these Letters Patent and making partv of the dame .'o all 'whom z't may conceden p I, FRANKLIN H. SMITH, of Burke, in the county f `of Caledonia and -State of Vermont, have invented a `certain new and `useful Safety Measuring-Tunnel, of
which the following is a specification. l
Natfuie and Object ofthe Invention.
The natureof my inveutiouconsists in combining,
with a measuring-tunnel, tubes and stop-cocks, so as to make a dou-ble connection with the barrel or vessel from which theuid is to be drawn, so that the fluid `may be `drawn oif, measured, and let into the can or jug without being exposed to the air, the object being to provide a `safe methodof drawing inflammable Description of the Aoconniauy/ing Drawing. Figure 1 representsmy invention in perspective. Figure 2 represents the same in section, the dotted lines representing a barreland stop-cock.
` General Description.
y I constr'uct my `device as follows:
i A is a measuring tunnel, constructed in any of the" approved motl1ods,`and is provided with a glass gaugepipe, E, and with a graduated plate, F, fig. 1, so that the amount of Huid inthe tunnel mafyY berknown by` the height of it iu the tube E. 4
4H is a flexible tube, which serves to .connect the measuring-tunnel to the cock K `of the barrel L, in-
dicated by the` dotted lines, lign?. Y p
p as a measuring device.
B isa conical tube, extending from the cock atthe bottom of the tunnel, vso as to direct t-hefluidinto the receiving vessel.
Gis a stop-cock, which is `to be closed while the measuring-tunnel is being filled; j
, d d* is a small flexible tube leading from .t-he measuring-tunnel A to the upper part of the barrel, soY that, as the iluidruns from `the barrel t-o the measuring-tunnel A, the displacement in one is balanced by that of Vthe other; thus the fluid will be freelto run from the barrel to the measuring-tunnel.
d d* dzis a small tube, extending from the lower end of the pipe Btc the upper part of the ineasur- Y ing-tunnel A, to allow the displaced air in the'ineas.-
Atiring-vessel to pass up and fill the vacuum in A.
The advantages of my device are,its safety in'ineasvuring dangerous nids, its convenience in preventing the escape of disagreeable odors, and its convenience 'I claim as my invention- The combination of the measuring-tunnel A, the glass tube E, and scale F, with the escape-tubes d', d, d2, and d d, arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
