HORSE-RELEASER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 25, 1912.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Serial No. 705,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CRAWFORD HARRIS and ELIGAH HARRIS, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Biardstown, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Releasers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to horse releasers and the principal object of the invention is to provide an improved type of device of the character described which is so constructed that the shafts may be released when it is desired to detach the horse from a vehicle.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved type of operating means for holding the shafts in place and for releasing them when desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction whereby the device may beprevented from moving to a released position when it is not desired to release the shafts.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the attaching means in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device in a released position. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device in a locked position. Fig. 4 is a side elevation in a locked position. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the device in a released position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that this invention comprises a base 10 which is connected with the body portion of the vehicle and carries the stationary links 11 adjacent its ends. Each of the stationary links 11 is provided with a reduced outer end portion 12 and with a cut out portion 13 in its lower face so that when the movable link 14 is in a closed position a pocket will be formed. Each of these movable links is provided with a slot in one end portion to form the pivot ears 15 which are pivotally mounted upon a pivot pin 16 passing through the reduced end 12 of the stationary link. A cut out portion 17 is formed in each of the movable links and registers with the cut out portion 13 when the movable link is in the position shown in Fig. 4 so that the pocket referred to above will be formed. The movable links are of such size that when moved to the position Shown in Fig. 4 they will extend back of the t-atably mounted in lugs 20 extending rearwardly from the bar 10 and forming bear ings and is provided at each outer end with an enlarged head 21 which overhangs the opening 18 when the movable links are in the locked position. Hooks 22 are carried by the heads 21 and pass through the openings 18 so that the movable links will be locked. It will be seen that when the hooks are in the position shown in Fig. 4 that the movable links cannot become detached from the hooks since the hooks fit well beneath the end portion of the movable link and therefore the movable link is securely held. A lever 23 is slidably mounted upon a squared portion 24 of the rod 19 and is used for rotating the rod so that the hooks may be moved from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Fig. 5, thus permitting the hooks to pass through the openings 18 and thus release the movable links.
It should be noted that a catch 25 extends from one of the lugs 20 so that when the hooks are in the position shown in Fig. 4 the lever may be moved behind the catch and thus the shaft prevented from being rotated.
The shafts 26 are provided with slots 27 at their inner ends, the outer ends of the slots being closed by the pins 28. These pins 28 fit into the pockets formed by the cut out portions 13 and 17 thereby removably connecting the shafts with the vehicle. WVhen using this device the movable links are passed through the slots formed in the shafts and moved to the position shown in Fig. 4 with the hooks 22 passing through the openings 18 and a lever engaged by the catch 25 so that the rod 19 cannot rotate. If the animal should become unmanageable the lever 23 is slipped along the squared shoulder 24 until it passes beyond the catch 25 and is then moved to'rotate the rod 19 and by moving the hooks to the position shown in Fig. 5 permit the pull upon the movable links to swing them upon their pivot pins so that the links will move to the position shown in Fig. 5 and thus release the shafts. It will, therefore, be seen that there has been provided a horse detacher which will work efiiciently and quickly but pivot lugs extending from said bar, a rod rotatably mounted in said lugs, stationary links carried by said bar, movable links pivotally connected with said stationary links, means carried by said rod for engaging said movable links to hold said movable links in a locked position, a lever: mounted upon said rod for rotating said rod, and means for preventing movement of said lever to rotate said rod.
'2. A horse releaser comprising a bar, pivot lugs carried by said bar, stationary links extending from said bar, movable Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
links pivotally connected with said sta tionary links, a rod rotatably mounted in said pivot lugs and provided with a squared section adjacent one of said lugs, a lever slidably mounted upon the squared section of said rod for rotating said rod, a stop carried by one of said lugs behind which said lever is adapted to be positioned to prevent movement of said lever to rotate said rod, and means carried by said rod for engaging said movable links to hold the same in a locked position.
In testimony whereof We hereunto ailix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
