To all it concern."
it known that-we,y GEoneE Woon and RonaTT: P orniN, citizens ofthe United States, .residing at.Butt er.-ie1d','ii i the' 'sraras Para 'f esoneri .wg nomini 5r. sorting.oraiiiriiaintm'alrssoum. i -ziiccnmcrmss 'verve-.citation sanear-ammini i county of- Ba'rry" and State df Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 7 Ecr:eI it-ricless.4 Valve- Gear for Steam-Engines, -ofwhich .the following is a specification, ref erencebeipg hadto y the aq.'
This invention relates toj'ai'i' eccentricless valve gear-for steam engines and has for its primary .object to provide an enginevvalv'eear wherein the. u'seofthelus'u'al eccentric is. ispensed with, thus greatly reducing-'the weight of the gearand permitting ofthe easy andquick actuation of 'the 'reversing elements thereof. l
A further objectof 'the invention resides in the provision of a valve gear of the' above character which. iseittrem'elyl simple iny its Aao construction', has few joints`,'thus rendering'- the same'very elic-int and durable 'inv-opi be manufactured aty Another object ofthe. invention is generally improve and' simplifyvalve gears for -steam engines vand to. produce a geai` which is' primarily designed'foruse upon locomotive engines, though it will become apparent' from the following' description that with slight modifications, the invention. may also .be rendered vapplicable to the4 various types of stationary engines.
lV'tli the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the 'description proceeds, the invention consists in' certain' constructions, combinations and arran e-l ments of the parts that weshall hereina ter' fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the-invention,y reference is to behad' to thefollowing' de-v scription and accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing'our improved valve gear applied to use upon a lbcomotive.

tending up'on opposite sides-of the slot in the standard 8 as shown Fig. 5., To theA block 17, one end of a linlr19 is pivotally connected. rlhe other end of this link is similarly l connected to one larm of a bell crank lever 201vvhich is operated through the medium of a rod or any other preferred means extending to the-engineers cab of the locomotive. y
From reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings,
it will be seen that' the valve stem connecting rod b 1:2'inte'rsects the arcuate slotted guide standard 8 substantially midway between its ends, and in order to insure an equal stroke of ythe steam chestvalve both in its forvvard `and reverse operati n, it Willbe obvious that the reversing rofl 16 at its for `Ward end must lie-moved the same distance above as below the rod 12. 'husavhen the rod 16' is shifted through the movement of the bell crank lever 20, 'the rocker armjla will be moved to theopposite sidel of the Wrist pin upon the upper` end of the crank pin l5 from the .position shown in Fig l.
so that the operation of the steam crest valve is reversed.- A' uniform Alength of stroke of the valve is assured in either po-` sit-ion of the reversing rod 16. i
Fromv 'the foregoing description taken in connection With the accompanying drax'vings, it is thought that the v construction and l operation of our improved eccentricless valve gear will be readily understood. Whenit is desired to reverse the operation of the engine, it Yis only necessary to shift the bell crank lever 2() whereupon the forward end of the reversing rod is moved to its uppermost or lowermost position in the slotted arcuate standard 8, as the case may be.
, Owing to the fact that the usevof Iall eccenhighly efficient Working order. It will also e appreciated that by eliminating the use of eccentrlcs in devices of this character, the
i Weight of the gear is materially reduced and the same may also be manufactured at relatively small cost.
`While We have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of vthe several elements employed, it 'will be understood that our improved valve gea-r is susceptible of a great many Vminor modificaaccedas tions which may be necessitated iniorder to adapt the invention to the various differentv types Io'fsteam engines, and that such minor alterations -as may fairly come Within the scope of the' appended claims are fully anticipated and may be resorted to in the practical development ofour invention.
Having thus described the invent-ion, what is claimed is: f y
- l. lnan eccentricless valve gear, the comn biration ivith the engine steamA chest valve,
of an arcuate guide member, a crank` pin carried by one of the movable parts of the lengine for travel in i circular path, a rocker arm having one of its ends fulcrumed upon said crank pin, a rod connected to the stem of the sliding valve, a reversin rod, means for slid-ably mounting one en( of said reversing rod in the arcuate guidemembenthe other ends of said connecting rod and reversing rod'being pivotally mounted upon the othenend of the rocker arm7 and means connected to the reversing rod adapted to Vbe manually operated to shift said reversing rod in the guide member and 'dispose said rocker arm with relation to the crank pin to reverse thevoperation ofthe steam 4chest valve. y
2. In an eccentricless valve gear for locomotives, the combination with the steam chest valve, of a vertically disposed arcuate slotted guide mounted upon the cross head frame of the engine, a sub-crank-pin keyed upon the driving rod gudgeon of one of the driving wheelsa rockerv arm fulcrumed at one of its ends upon said sub-crank pin, a
connecting rod connected at one end to the stem of the steam chest valve and pivotal'ly mounted at its other end upon the opposite 'end of said rocker arm, ablock movably mounted in said slotted guide, a reversing rodpivotally connected to one end of said block, the other end of said rod being pivotally mounted upon they latter end of the rocher arm, and manually. operable means connected to said block to shift the same 4in the guide member and l.dispose said rocker arm with relation to the sub-crank pin to reverse the operation of vthe steam chest valve. y
