,Be it known that I, IIEINRICH WILHELM FRIEDRICH Janene, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Qhio, ave invented a new and Improved Adofwhich the follow- This invention relates to improvements in doorsfor cars designed to carry grain, and has for an object to. provide an improved structure'which may beadjusted or expanded so as to. permit grain of different weights to be shipped in the same car without changing the door and without reducing. the amount of grain which may be safely shippedin any particular car.
Another object of the invention is to providea grain door formed in a plurality of parts and arranged with apertures on one side co-acting with a locking pin designed to be projected through the respective apertures according to the height of'the adjustable portion ofthe door so as to hold the In carrying out the objects of the invention, a door is provided which is hinged in position in the car so as to swing or to be pivoted to one side when it is desired to oi the .door.
One construction of a grain door of a somewhat similar nature to the present invention is disclosed in my Patent No. 554,932, issued February 18, 1896. In the present invention the same shows an improvement over this former patent by the particular arrangement and construction of the door and means for holding the same in various positions. The door is provided with a lower portion which is pivotally is attached, and which is associated with a movable portion designed to be raised upward to close to a greater or less extent the entire doorway; A pin is arranged in one side of the door casing which is adapted to be projected through various apertures provided in the adjustable door at various times so as to hold the door at varying heights. This is of advantage as the different grains have different weights. When a heavy grain is being shipped, as for instance wheat, the adjustable portion of the door is left in its 'lowermost'position as the car will not support more than approximately half of a load, while lighter grain, as for instance ing's oats, may be placed in the earuntil the car 18 two-thirds fullor possibly more. Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a grain door of the class described, the combination with a door frame, of a pivotally mounted door, a stationary pin for, pivotally connecting said pivotaily mounted door with said frame, a reciprocating spring pressed pin mounted in said frame, an aperture formed in said pivotally mounted door for accommodating said pin whereby the pivotally mounted door is locked against adjustable section pivotal movement when the reciprocating pin is projecting into said aperture, a vertically adjustable section associated, with said pivotally mounted door, said vertically adjustable section being formed with a row of apertures adapted to accommodate said reciprocating spring-pressed pin at ditierent places whereby the vertically adjustable sec tion is held in its adjusted position and said pivctally mounted door is held against. pivotal movement.
