To oil ywhom z' may conce/rn Be it known that L ALBERT B. CHEIW, a oitizen of the United Statesj residing at washington, in the listrict of Columbia, have' invented certain new and useful improvements in Machines for Forming Armee ture-Coils, oi which the following is specitication.
The present invention relates tol a machine :for .Winding armature coils.
An im ortant object of this invention is 'go provid@ means whereby o plurality or" individual armature coils tney 'ne Wound upon :i :form from s lcontinuous strand ot Wire, nd Subsequently easily removed therefrom ready to be secured to an armature drum.
A further 'object of my inventiony is to provide a coil Winding machine which is quick, automatic, and reliable in operation.
A Jfurther object opthis invention is to ororidc novel meansto so feed the Wire to a form that.the turns of each individual coil will be Wound flat and even.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course or the following description. v
In the accompanying drawings forming e part of this specification and in .which like rumerals are employed to designate like throughout the same, Figure 1 is a e VYiev: of the machine, Fig. is u plan v. thereof, Fig. 3 is a right end vieu' of seme parts being omitted7 Fig. l is a nsverse sectional View taken on line Ale--l 1 lig. 5 is a lett end view ci the ,le left end ot' the base of the machine, i' is an enlarged detail View of a guide ley and associated elements, Fig'. 8 is a renal view on line 8--8 of Fig. 7, and il is a similar view taken on line 9 9 1 iig. 7.
.in the drawings wherein is illust-rated preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1- designates a base ofthe fixed freine or supporting structure of the machine. Upon opposite ends of this base are disposed uprights '2 and 3, as shown. Formed ,upon the upper end of the upright y5 are spaced extensions or, lugs 4 and 5,
through Which-1s mounted a longltudinally nmvnble bearing 6, preferably forked at its outer end tohave' pivotal connection with the intermediate portion of a lersr.--'i', as
:drown at 8. Thisc'er is pirotally een@ l lne Fig. 6 1s a -fragmentary plan view,
'clamping nut 44.
are provided whereby the bearing 40 may be 100 '111g free to turn therein but ,partaking of. any perceptible longitudinal @orientent with relation thereto.' "Splined 11,9
The other u ri flot 2 is rovided with ertensions or lugs 12 and 13,through which is joornaled a rotatable shaft 14, which is inA capable of having any perceptible longitudinal movement with respect to the upright 2. The shaft 14- is provided at its outer end with a pinion 15,' receiving rota tion from suitable means (not shown),
vliigidly mounted upon the shaft 14C is an outer cross 16, having suitable detachable connection with an inner cross 19, included .in a rotatable form 20. This form comprises generally longitudinal bars`23 provided with spaced openings 24 to receive the wire. Thebars 23 are pivotally connected at one end with the inner cross 19 and have a similar connection at their opposite ends with a small cross 21. vThe crosses 19 and 21 are both rigidly mounted upon a central .shaft 20,
having its ends in engagement with the ends of the shafts 14 and 6.V As no claim is made to this rotatable Aform per se, it is thought that theebove brief description will suiiic'e.
The shaft lil is provided midway its ends with a lworm 36,' engaged upon one side by a worm Wheel 37 and upon the opposite side by a worm wheel 38, as most clearly shown in Fig. Q, The Worm wheel 37 is rioidly mounted upon the upper end of a shatt 39, which is jonrnaled through a tubular bearing 40, as more clearly shown in Figa 5. The tubular bearing 40 is provided midway its ends with e triumion Ll-1 operating through a slot l2 formed carried by the upright Q. The trunnion 41 is screw-thrcaded for the reception of a lt is thus seen that means angularlv adjusted and securely locked in suoli adjusted position. At its lower end the `haft 39 carries a bevel ,cour 44, rigidly connected therewith und engaging a bevel The shait 46 is rotatably mounted in bearings 47, the same beincapable of through an eur 43' rigidly mounted upon a shaft 46 105 (see Figs. 5 andy (i).
vedge thereof and upon the shaft i6 a pulley 50, provided upon its periphery with a cam groove 5l.
Formed upon the base l adjacent the rear extending parallel vwith the shaft 46, is a lixed track 52, "ishaped in cross-section, as more clearly shown in Fig. 7. Mounted upon this track to move longitudinally thereof is a carriager spaced ears 5e formed upn one edge thereof, such ears being apertured to receive the shaft d6, whereby said shaft iscapable of freely turning in the ears and said ears are capable of moving longitudinally of the Shaft. Pivotally mounted intermediate its ends upon the carriage 53, as shown at 55, is a shifting lever 56, provided at one-end With a depending bolt 57, carrying a roller 58, operating in the cani groove 51 of the pulley 50. 'Attention is called to the fact that this pulley 50 is disposed between the ears 54 and is thus made to travel longitudinally with the carriage A' carriage or sleeve 59 is longitudinally adjustably mounted upon the foriuud or free end of the i'voted shifting lever 5G, and means in the form of a clamping screw 60u15@ provided to lock the carriage or sleeve in adjustment at different positions ,upon Said shifting lever 56. A, groot'ed guide pulley 6l. is carried by the carriage 59, as shown.
Means are provided for effecting annick step-by-step movement. ot' the carriage 53, f
and thesamo will be described hereinafter. In order that the carriage may not be moved longitudinally too freely and go beyond the desired point, l preferably inlerpose a strip or plaie 62 between the upper surface of the track 52 and the carriage as shown. The frietional engagement between the strip 6:2 and the track i2 is regulated 'by a compres sible coil spring G3, disposed Within a housing 64, formed upon the carriage 53. rlhe tension of this spring 63 may be changed by proper manipulation of a bolt 66, engaging a. disk CT operatingin the housing 6l and also engaging the spring 6I, Means are provided for preventingthe strip or plate 62 from having act ntal displacement with relationl to the carriage Extending longitudinally. of the base 1 and-slidably engaging the saine, is a feed bar 68 included in the means to move the carriage 53. This feed bai* is provided upon its rear edge and for the greateiportion of its length with ratchet teeth 69., faced, as shown. The end portions of the lfeed bai'` 68 are free from the ratchet teeth. and are slidablyinounted in openingst, formed adjacent the lower ends of the uprights 2 and 3. This feed rod is automatically moved to the right, when released, by a couipressible coil spring 7l. longitudinally adjnstably mounted upon tlfe left end portion of the feed rod 68 is a bracket 72 and clamping' bolt 73 is provided to lori: said bracket TQ in 53, having albanese adjusting at different positions on the 'rod 68. y Pivotally connected `with the bracket 7g2, as shown at 74, is a .link 75, carrying at its opposite end a bolt 76, operating in a.'
longitudinal slot/I7 formed through ,a lever 78. shown at 79, with an extension or shelf 80. The lever 78 is provided midway its end with a laterally extending 'tooth or lug 80', engaging a cani 81, as shown. It is thus seen that the feed rod 68 is moved longitudinally to the left by this cani 81, operating thiough the medium of the lever 78 and the linli; 75. The feed rod G8 isvmoved longitudinally 'to the right by the spring 71, which occurs when the lug 80 is tripped b a shoulder Si! of the cani. The extent of tlie longitudinal movement of the feed rod 68 to the left may be regulated by point between the lever 7S and the link 75,
which. is accomplished by moving the bolt i6 l nient of this feed rod to the left is ifiic-ieased.Y
The cam 81 is rigidly mounted upon the lower end of a vertically disposed rotatable shaft 83, to the upper end of which is rigidly conneeted a pinion S-l, engaging an interinediate pinion 85, rigidly mounted on the upper end of a shaft 86, which is journaled through a bearingi' and has eonnec tion thereheloiv with the Worm wheel 38. lt is thus seen that the shaft 8? is geared to the shaft le to be rotated at a reduced speed thereby, preferably one to fifty.
At its forward edge the carriage 58 is provided With an apertured ear #38 through which extends a pivoted bolt 89, hat/ing rigid connection at its lower end With a pand and at its upper end with a handle or linger-hold 91. The paWl 90 is adapted to engage the teeth 69 of the feed rod 68 and is urged into such engagement if?? a spring 92.
ln the operation of my machine, a spool of vthe Wire of the desired cross-sectional area is suitably mounted in front of the machine and the free end of such Wire is passed undo-i and about the guide pulley 6l.
The wire is attached in the first notch to the left of one of the bars 23.. The pinion 15 is now set in rotation at any desired speed whereby the collapsible form or frame including the bars 23 will be accordingly rotated. When the" machine is first started and guide pulle the shifting lever 56 The lever` T 8 is pivoted at one end, as

:uit A lll ll lill aaa y 61' are positioned adjacent and in alinement with the first set of notches whereb wound in t lese notches. woundlhe pulley 50 isrbeiug rotated at a much reduced rate compared to the shaft ld,
the first coil will be formedor and such rotation of this pulley4 eifects horizontal swinging or shifting movement' of lever 56, wlieicblvftlleegi i pullfy 61 is .fis this coil is beingy "The next coil will now be vthe carriage 51%.
merece lshifted to 'feed wire so it will Wind in ilzat eren layers. Attention is called to the fact that the shalt 4&8 is rotated at the seme speed as the elicit 83; The-cem 8l is now being slowly rotated and accordingly engages the tootli 80 to effect a sivn ing movement of the lever 78. rlliis lever operating through the medium of the link causes the tee-d rod 68 to be moved longitudinally to the lett.. The pawl 90 is tripped over one tooth 69 subsequently to which the tootn of the lever '78 is tripped by the shoulder S2 of the com Sl. The spring 7l will bow advance the feed rod 68 to the right for the distance ot the length of one or" the teeth G9, or in other words, a proper distance so 'that the guide pulley Gl Will be in alincnicnt with `tlie next set of notches Q4. wound in this set of notches und the saine suit'l'ing movement of the lever 56 is .he l. In a Similar manner each Successive coil is Wound until the laSt Set of notches 2l to the right has been eniployetl, Subsequently to which the rotation ot' the sliatt ll is stopped.. vt is thuseeen that automatic means :ire provided to give a quick step by step adr-ance movement to which carries the shitting lever 5G, above described. This carriage may be returned to its normal Starting position by the operator swinging the handle ill to the lett-`v thus disenguging' the paWl 90 subsequently to 4 und the ratchet teeth ($9. \\'hicli said cni'i'lnce muy be moved to the lett. "The rotutuble torni muy now be re mored troni l'vctsrecn the stationary bearings 2 :ind so that the coils ot Wire thereon may be further 'm Soi-m QG is collapsible so that the coils of Wire formed thereon muy be removed there- ;ti'oni.
