CHARLES C. MATTOX, OF LAURELVILLE, OHIO.
ASH-PAN FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed March 9, 1912. Serial No. 682,679.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. MATTOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurelville, in the county of Hocking and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pans for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ash-pans for locomotives, and the objects of my improvement are: 1st. To provide means whereby a fireman from his seat in the cab may dump ashes from the ash-pan and thereby avoid the danger of going under the engine to rake the ashes out. 2nd. To provide a mechanism of few parts, simple and cheap in construction and at the same time eflicient in operation. 3rd. To provide a mechanism that will dump the ashes from the locomotive at any time and at any place desired. I attain these objects by the mechanisms illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of my application for Letters Patent, and in which Figure l is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
In the drawings 1 represents the side plates of the ash-pan and 2 represents crossplates which join the side plates of the ashpan together. The bottom of the ash-pan consists of a series of folding leaves 3, composed of two plates 4 and 5 hinged together. One edge of each plate 4 is adapted to rotate on a transverse rod 6 which extends through and is secured in the plates 1. The free edge of each plate 5 is mounted on a transverse rod 7, which extends through slots 8 in the side plates and into connecting bars 9.
On each side of the ash-pan suitable connections are made from the bars 9 to the rock arms 10 mounted on a rock shaft 11. The rock arm 10 on the left, or firemans side of the locomotive, is connected to the lower end of a hand lever 12, which extends upward into the cab and is fulcrumed to a suitable part of the locomotive framework.
It will be understood that when the lever 12 is pulled back the rods 7 connected by the bars 9 will simultaneously slide forward in the slots 8, so that the leaves 4: and 5 will assume the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, and allow the ashes to drop through the openings thus formed. A reverse movement of the lever 12 will return the parts to their normal positions.
The number of folding leaves 3 in the series forming the bottom of the ash-pan may be varied according to the size of the ash-pan without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A locomotive ash-pan having side plates provided with slots, a bottom composed of a series of leaves, each leaf consisting of two members hinged together, arod to which one of said members is rotatably secured, a second rod secured to the other of said members projecting through corresponding slots in said side plates and an operating mechanism connected with the projecting ends of said rods, the parts being so arranged that the two members of the leaves fold up when moved into dumping position.
2. A locomotive ash-pan having side plates provided with slots, a bottom composed of a series of leaves, each leaf consisting of two members hinged together, a rod to which one of said members is rotatably secured, a second rod secured to the other of said members projecting through corresponding slots in said side plates and means connected with the projecting ends of said rods for operating said leaves simultaneously, .the parts being so arranged that the two members of the leaves fold up when moved into dumping position.
3. A locomotive ash-pan having side plates with oppositely arranged slots, a bottom comprising a series of leaves, each leaf consisting of two members hinged together, one of said members being rotatably secured, a rod secured to the other of said members having its ends projecting through corresponding slots and an operating mechanism affixed niy signature in the presence of two engaging szud pr0 ect1ng ends, the S2116. part-s wlt-nesses.
being so arranged that the two members CHARLES C. MATTOX. of the leaves fold up when moved into WVitnesses: 5 dumping position. PEARL K0011,
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto GEO. B. WILLIAMSON.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
