Be it known that I, JAY Pmnnn BnnonnoN. a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the county of T azewell and State of Illinois have invented new and use ful Improvements in fulvertising Devices of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising devices of that character adapted to be secured to the wheels of a vehicle.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a support for the advertising card or matter which will effectively support the same and which will at the same time combine the elements of lightness of weight and rigidity necessary for structures of this character.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of the fewest possible number of parts and of the least possible cost of construction.
The invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and will he more fully set forth and particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims.

In the construction shown the hub of a vehicle wheel is designated at 1 and the spokes thereof at 2. A support is provided and is adapted to be secured to the wheel, preferably adjacent to the hub thereof and as shown said support is of annular or circular form and surrounds the hub. Said support is indicated as a whole at 3 and is of reversed Z-shaped form in cross-section, a portion 4 thereof being adapted to lie adjacent the spokes and a portion 5 thereof projecting outwardly therefrom and forming with a flange 6 a ball race. The portion 1 may be secured to the spokes 2 by means comprising a U-shaped threaded bolt 7 to Specification of Letters latent.

the ends of which a spoke engaging clip 8, may be secured, by means of nuts 9. As shown in Fig. 3 the bolt 7 engages and also passes through apertures formed in the portion 4;. The support 3 is effectively reinforced and stiffened by flanges 10, 11 and 12 and the flange 12 is conveniently provided with an annular groove 13. A retaining member 14 is secured to the support 3 by means which may consist of bolts 15 and said retaining member is provided with a flange 16 which engages said groove 13 to provide a rigid support for said retaining member. Said member 14: is also provided with an annular flange 17 which projects radially outwardly abreast of the support 3 and preferably to a point adjacent the flange 11, for a purpose which will hereinafter more fully appear.
A card supporting frame, designated as a whole by 18, is movably mounted on said support 3 and I desirably provide said. frame with a bearing member 19 adapted to fit with a working clearance between the portion 5 and the flange 17 and provided with a ball engaging surface 20 adapted to ride upon balls 21 disposed in the ball race. The retaining member 14L serves to retain the bearing member 19 in position and acts therethrough to retain the balls 20 in the race provided therefor. If desired the bear ing member 19 may be provided with card attaching means which may consist of a threaded stud 22 and a nut 23, as shown. The bearing member 19 is provided with a peripheral portion of polygonal formation, which may as shown he octagonal and which may be formed by a flange 24-.
A skeleton card supporting frame is provided and as shown it consists of a plurality of angularly disposed members secured to each other in interlocking relation and in order to obtain the required lightness of weight and structural rigidity I desirably provide reinforced members of light sheet metal which may be in the form of channel bars 25. As shown each of said bars 25 extends completely across the frame 18, formed thereby, and at points laterally of the center of the frame so that each bar will therefore be slightly reduced in length with respect to the greatest diameter of the frame and the outer ends of said bars are connected with an annular member 26. The disposition of the bars or members 25 forms a central octagonal opening in which the bearing member 19 is disposed. The channel bars 25 are conveniently arranged so that their flanges will project inwardly and engage the octagonal perimeter in overlapping relation. It will be obvious that when the frame 18 is built up on the bearing member 19 that the latter will be securely anchored to the frame without the necessity of bolts or screws or other connecting devices.
In order to efiectively interlock the channel bars 25 with each other for the purpose of providing a rigid frame structure and preventing the frame from dishing under lateral pressure, the said bars 25 are disposed'in a manner to intersect each other in the manner shown in Fig. 4. Accordingly the base of one channel is apertured to permit an adjacent bar to extend therethrough and the base portion 27 of the extending bar engages the wall 28 of the opening or aperture and the flanges 29 of the extending bar engage the wall 30 of the aperture thereby providing a rigid structural engagement of the intersecting bars. It will thus be seen that when the ends of the bars are secured to the annular member 26 their intermediate portions will be rigidly engaged with each other in interlocking relation. In the construction shown each bar 25 will be interlocked with companion bars at four clifferent points. At the intersection of certain of said bars card securing devices 31 may be anchored and will be provided with threaded studs 32 adapted to project through the card 34 so that the latter may be an chored thereto by means of nuts 33.
The annular member 26 may be formed in one piece with the ends united by a slot and tongue connection 34: and 85, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
A buffer of rubber or other suitable material may be provided and as shown said bufler consists of a channel member 36 It will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that Q the parts are so disposed that they will be interlocking relation with respect to each other.
2. The combination with a vehicle wheel, of an advertising device comprising a support, means for securing said support to the vehicle wheel, a card supporting frame centrally and rotatably mounted on said support and comprising a plurality of reinforced members angularly disposed in interlocking relation with respect to each other,
and an annular member connected with the ends of said reinforced members, each of sa1d :reinforced members extending across said frame at a point laterally of the greatest diameter thereof and said reinforcing members meeting at said annular member.
3. The combination with a vehicle wheel,
.of an advertising device comprising a support, means for securing said support to the vehicle wheel, a card supporting frame comprising a plurality of reinforced members angularly disposed in interlocking relation with respect to each other, an annular member connected with the ends of said reinforced members, each of said reinforced members extending completely across said frame laterally of the center thereof toprovide a central opening of polygonal formation, and a similarly formed bearing member .disposed in sa1d opening and engaged by said reinforced members and rotatably mounted on said support.
