the cost of construction and maintenance.
rlllhe improvement claimed is vhereinafter fully set forth. u
linthe accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a transverse section through the side framemembers of a locomotive "engine,v
illustrating, lpartly in side elevation and partly in vertical longitudinal section, a driving box structure embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a` transverse section through the axle and driving box, on the line a, 'a ot Fig. 1; and, Fig. line Z) Zroflig. 1.
My invention is herein-exemplified as applied in connection with a locomotive engine, the trame of which is of the standard-bar type, and comprises two side members, which are, as in present practice, spaced at the maximum distance apart available under the necessary limitation imposed by the width between driving wheel hubs. Each ot the side frame members comprises, so taras the portion thereonV in which the driving axles are tit-ted is concerned, the usual toprail, l, bottom rail, 2, and `connecting vertical pedestals, each of which consists of a pairof pedestal jaws, 3, in which vone of the sections of a driving' box structure, herein Letters Patent No.v
3, a similar section on the inatter described, is fitted between. a wedge, 4, and a shoefflb, in the ordinary manner. The open space4 between,v the/sections of the lower traine rail, at the bottom ofthe pedestalf'ispanned by a pedestal tie, 5, secured removably in position by `bolts,'5a. l
In Vthe practice ot' my invention, the journals, Gig-,of theA .driving axle., G; which are, as usual, located on the ,inner sides .ot'-,`and immediately adjoining, the wheel/seats on which ,the driving wheels, 7, lare fixed, are made". of" materially increased.` length, as compared vwith 'the ordinary-practice prior ,toLetters Patent No. 1,024,620 aforesaid,
and the portion of the Weight ot the locomotive which is supportedby the driving axle, isappliedt-hereto through a rigid drivvingbox ystructure lcomprising' two open bottomed sections, 4, 4, the opening of each ot' which is of 'greater width than the major diameter of the driving axle, and each of which has an integral driving box, of substantiallyordinaiy form, on its outer end, within .which driving box there is secured a journal` bearing, le, tting on, and corresponding in length with, one ofthe axle journals, 6a. The sections, Il, l, abut in the longitudinal central plane of the locomo tive, andare rigidly secured together by a plurality of boltsnlle, passing through end flanges, 4f, on the inner ends of the sections, A lubricant cellar, 4d, is fitted in each of the driving box-sections, below the axle ournal, and is Lheld removably in position by bolts, y in the usual manner.
lThe connection of the driving boxes of the two axle journals as above described, provides a continuous;I structure, which is both rigid in service, and separable, as desired, extending` from the outer end of one/axle journalto the corresponding end of the other, and thereby enables the pedestal jaw extensions and speci-al' forms of yspring arrange menty appliances set forth in Letters Patent No. 1,024,620, tobe wholly dispensed with. It will, further, be obvious that, by the zip- Dlication ofA the "rigid" structure described, journals of increased length may be used with the usual spring arrangement, Without uneven wear on the ends of the journals or bearings, for the reason that-,while the transverse central planes of the journals do notco-incide with .the longitudinal central planes ot the springs, yet the load is transmitted across the locomot-ive'by meansof the stiff andl unyie'lding drivingV box structure, and
llt
thereby substantially 'uniform Wear will be obtained. The eonditionsof loeomotiveengine construction and maintenance require-that the driving boxes shall be insertible and removable for pnrposesof assembly, renewal, and repair, Withut interference With the axle andl Wheels," and, With the; driving box strueture above described, their removalmay be readily effected by withdrawing the bolts,
4e, by which the sections, 4,4, are connected,
the driving box Wedges andshoes,` andthe pedestal ties', and turningone of the sections in one direction and the other in the oppor,-
' frame members. I In the instance exemplified sitedirection, thereby permitting each section to 'be removed by a movement equal to half the height of thev end bolting Harige, 4f. The insertion of the driving box struct-ure .is` correspondingly effected.
' The spring arrangement, through Which` that lportion of the Weight of the frame and,
.members of the locomotive lconnected thereto which is borne by the driving axles is trans- `mitted to the latter` is, as in ordinary prac.
tice, located in line' centrally with the side the Weight actingon the springs, 9, is tra-iis-7 initted from the springs to the connected driving box sections througlrvertical spring l saddles, 10,.thelegs of. which restin recesses in the. tops of the vdriving box sections on pposite sides of the frame members, and which support the spring'bands, 9, in seats on their upper ends. The Weight bearing. on the frame istr'ansinitted therefrom to the ends of the springs through spring hangers,l 9b, in the ordinary manner.
-I claim as mylinpvention anddesire to secure by Letters Patent 1'. A driving. box structure for a locomotive driving axle, comprising two sections, eachhaving an integral driving box at one of its ends and a journal bearing secured therein, and a bolting ange onits opposite end, and a plurality ofbolts passing throughthe bolting iianges and securing the .sections rigidly and detachably one to the other:
2. TheA combination, in a locomotive engine, of a pairof side frame members, a transversely extending driving box structure comprising two sections secured together rigidly and detacliably at their inner ends, each having aA driving box formed integral with its outer end and fitting-in a pedestal yin one ofthe side frame members, and aving axle -journaled in said driving boxes. 3. Tlie-,comb1na tion, in a locomotive engine, of a ypair of side frame iiienibeis. a
transversely extending driving box structure comprising. two sections secured togetl'ier rigidly and detacliably at their inner ends, each having a driving box formed integral' SfVV. TYLER, FRANK B. ScoviLL.
