ELECTRIC SWITCH AND CUT-OUT.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
i Original application filed February 28, 1910, Serial No. 546,454. Divided and this application led February 28, 1911.
New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Art of Electric Switches and Cut-Outs, of which the follow-4 ing is a specification.
This invention, which the accompanying illustrations disclose one of the practical forms into which the same may be embodied, constitutes means for providing a combined safety-fuse and cutout, or switch, for use in the art of electricity, and it is an 4object of the invention to provide for the renewal ot' fuses, at will, both manually and automatically, and to break the circuit, at will, by the operation of a carrier for the Jfuses.
This case is a division of one iled by me of February, 1910,-Serial Number 546,454.
Another object of the invention is to remove, at will, a member by which fuses are carried, whereby, insured from danger of contact, the fusecarrying'\member may be refilled Or remounted with fuses.
Other objects of the invention may be observed by reference to said drawings and the following specification.
By reference to said drawings, Figure 1 illustrates in front elevation, looking at the base; the fuse-carrier and fuses in Contact. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts in the drawings.
It need not again be mentioned, that such portions as should be insulated may be here considered as constructed ot such non-con ducting material, as for instance, fiber.
The essence of the invention may be clothed in a form of device, comprehending a base 3, upon which may be inovably mounted a carrie' 4, adapted to support a pair of fuses 5, u nich may be smiported by Suitable contact-pieces, Such as fuse clips (i, T, 8, and 9, 'which may be mounted on said carrier. From these clips,- or Such other contact-pieces as may be employed, extend blades or knives 10, 11, 12, and 1li, these cciinuing their extension from the con tacts 67, A8, and 9, to and over the periphery of the carrier 4, which, in the present case, is disclosed as substantially circular, also any Serial No. 611,489.
other shaped device may answer` the pur pose. In order to provide a contact for these blades or knives, aforementioned,
there may extend from the base portion 4,
contact- pieces 14, 15, 16, and 17, which are So elevated in their extension as to be disposed above the carrier 4, and the endsofl these latter named contact-pieces so over eX- -tend the periphery of the carrier as to positively contact with the pieces 10,11, 12, and 13, when the latter, through the movement ofthe carrier 4, are shifted into place. This precise form and arrangement for contact may not be necessary, as other means for attaining the same' purpose maybe adopted within the purview of the invention. This arrangement, however, at present appears practical, and therefore, for the purpose of illustration and explanation, has been adopted.
Due to the fact of the extension over the periphery of the carrier 4, of the contact pieces 14, 15, 16, and 17, and in order that the carrier, which is both movably and removably mounted, may be removed from the base, there may be provided recesses in the carrier, such as 18, 19, 20, and 21, which, when shifted in the position of the contactpieces, will permit the removal of fthe carrier 4, from the base 3. This carrier 4, may be mounted in any suitable manner, as is obvious, although as shown in this case, a Stud 22, at the base of the carrier 4, extends into an opening 28, in the base 3, and the carrier may be held in place in any suitable Y manner. For the purpose of manipulating the carrier upon the base 3, a handle S24, eX- tending from a standard 25, mounted on the carrier 4, is provided.
lt will now be observed that 1 have provided means for replacing fuses, by manual means, trom a loaded carrier containing.
openings in said carrier, whereby to permit 'said carrier to clear the projecting portions ot' said contact pieces, so as to be lifted ott from said base.
2. In an electric switchof the character described,- the combination of a base, a fuse carrier detachably mounted upon said base, a pivot, -whereb said carrier may be revolved upon said base, clips secured to said carrier, fuses supported in said clips, blades projecting over the edge of said carrier, whereby to contact with .said clips, means for moving said fuses in and out of contact,
whereby to make land break an electric circuit, and recesses in said carrier, adapted to aline with the position of said blades, whereby to permit said carrier to 'clear the projecting portions of said' blades, so as to be removed from said base and be replaced by an other carrier reloaded with fuses.
Signed at Utica, Oneida county, and State of New York, this 27 day of February, l911 JAMES S. JOHNSTON.
