PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led March 4,1911.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
serial No. 612,250.
To all 'whom may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. Rossmann, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a plow which will possess great strength and durability and which will enable the dealer with a small number of parts in stock to meetthe demand for a comparatively large variety of plows.
A secondary object of the invention is to provide a plow in which the parts may be readily assembled and will be firmly held together so as to preserve the curve or concavity of the plow and maintain the suclr and gather of the same.
Other incidental objects will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood from the following description and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In' the annexed drawings, which fullyillustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of a plow saddle, share and landside, the share having an integral cutter. Fig. 2 is a side view of the saddle. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the saddle, share and landside assembled. Figs. 5 and 6 are elevations of the opposite sides of the landside. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an elevation showing the parts assembled with a removable cutter.
In carrying out my present invention, l employ a saddle l which has a landside member and a moldboard member diverging rearwardly from the front curved edge of the saddle in the usual manner. The moldboard member is formed with boltholes or openings to facilitate the fastening of the moldboardand the share thereto and is also provided with a recess or seat to receive a lip or lug on the cutter in the usual manner. On the outer face of its landside member, the saddle is provided with a rib 2 presenting a horizontal shoulder on its under side extending between the front and rear edges of the saddle, the rear end of said rib being beveled inwardly and forwardly as shown at 3. Near the point of the saddle, in the landside face of the same, is a non-circular or oblong recess or depression 4, while the lower edge of the saddle is cut away in its rear portion to provide a vertical shoulder 5, which is beveled slightly toward the rear of the saddle, as shown in Fig. 4, the cut away portion 6 of the edge being beveled downwardly as shown. The share 7 fits against the front edge of the saddle and is bolted to the moldboard member thereof. The cutter 8 may be integral with or detachable from the share, in either event following the curvature of and fitting closely to the front edge of the saddle. `When the cutter is detachable, its lower end will extend below the front end of the rib or shoulder 2 as shown, and it will be constructed with a lip or lug to engage recesses in the inoldboard and the share to be retained in position. The point 8 of the share extends rearwardly on its landside side to fit over the point or extremity of the saddle and terminates in a vertical shoulder 9 which is beveled inwardly and forwardly.
The landside l0 fits closely against the saddle and its front end presents the beveled vertical shoulder 11, adapted to engage the shoulder 9 on the share, and the curved edge 12 extending from the upper end of said shoulder to the upper edge of the landside and closely following the curvature of the saddle and the cutter so as to aid in supporting the cutter, said Curved edge being beveled to engage under the cutter and be thereby held to the saddle. The upper edge of the landside is straight in its forward portion to fit closely against the rib or shoulder 2 and is provided with a projection or offset 13 having a straight beveled front edge to engage the rear beveled portion 3 of the saddle. On its inner side, along its lower edge, the landside is provided with a fiange or lip y14 which expands laterally toward its rear end to constitute a runner and the front end of this flange is properly beveled to fit squarely against the vertical shoulder 5 of the saddle while the upper surface of the rib will bear against the reduced beveled edge 6. The landside is further provided on its inner face with a lug or projection 15 near the vertical shoulder 11 adapted to engage and tit snugly in the recess or depression 4 in the saddle and thereby prevent dropping of the front end of the landside. The landside is further provided with a lug or projection 16 adapted to engage the rear edge of the saddle to aid in holding the landside in its proper position and also provide a rest for the end of the handle which is bolted to the landside. twill thus be seen that the landside will be interloclred with the share and the saddle so that it cannot readily slip out of place when in use and, consequently, a single bolt 17 inserted through the landside and the saddle will suffice to secure it in position. 1 am thus enabled to preserve the unbroken smooth outer surface of the landside, the bolts 18 for securing the saddle to the beam being covered by the landside. To relieve these bolts of strain, lugs 19 are provided on the saddle adjacent the opening for the forward bolt and a conical boss 2O is formed around the opening for the rear bolt. The beam is provided in its lower end with a socket 21 to engage said boss and a slot 22 to engage said lugs thereby relieving the bolts of all draft strain and preventing the beam from working loose.
It will be readily seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, thatlf have provided a plow of very simple construction and in which the parts may be readily Cast and iitted together in interlocking engagement so that an exceedingly small number of bolts will fasten the members securely together. The landside extends to the front edge of the saddle and the curved portion of the end of the landside forms a continuation of the curve described by the front edge of the saddle above the rib 2. The end of the landside thus may be and is overlapped by the rear edges of the share and cutter and is thereby held to the saddle and also, in its turn, aids in supporting the share and the cutter. The resistance of the ground is consequently taken up directly by the landside so that additional strength is imparted to the point and the cutter. The lug 15 and recess et, being located near the extremity of the landside and the saddle, also serve to sustain the landside under t-he strain imparted thereto by the share. It will also be noted that both the upper and lower edges of the landside positively engage the saddle so that upward thrust upon t-he landside will be positively resisted and twisting of the landside e`ectually prevented. A dealer may thus in a few minutes secure to the saddle, a share having a cutting edge of any desired shape and by keeping in stock the saddle and landside herein disclosed together with the saddle landside and false gunwale disclosed in an application filed by me simultaneously herewith, and three shares or points, he may furnish any one of four distinct plows.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. The combination with a plow saddle having a vertical shoulder in the lower edge of its landside memben'a longitudinal landside-locking rib on the outer face of said member extending from the front to the rear edge thereof, and a recess in said face below said rib and in advance of said vertical shoulder in the lower edge of the member, of a landside having its upper edge engaging said rib on the saddle and its lower edge provided with a lateral flange extending under the lower edge of the landside member of the saddle and abutting against the vertical shoulder therein, said landside also having a lug formed on its inner face near its front end to engage the said recess in the saddle.
2. The combination with a plow saddle having a non-circular recess formed in the outer face of its landside member near the lower front corner thereof, and a straight landside-engaging rib on said face extendmg between its frontI and rear edges above said recess, of a landside extending to the front edge of the saddle and having a lug formed on its inner face near its front end to engage said recess in the outer face of the saddle and rest against the side, top, bottom and end walls thereof, the upper edge of the landside bearing against the rib on the saddle.
3. The combination with a plow saddle having an oblong recess in the outer face of its landside member near the lower front corner thereof, of a landside having formed on its inner face near the lower corner of its front end a lug adapted to engage said recess, the upper and lower edges of the landside being interlocked with the saddle whereby a single bolt will hold the landside and the saddle together.
f1. The combination with a plow saddle having a horizontal rib on its landside face, the rear end of the rib being beveled inwardly and forwardly, of a landside having its upper edge engaging said rib and formed with a forwardly and inwardly extending projection engaging the rear end of the rib, the landside and the saddle being interloclred at their lower edges.
5. The combination with a plow saddle having a vertical shoulder on the lower edge of its landside member and provided with a recess in the outer face of said member in advance of said shoulder and a straight horizontal rib above said recess extending between the front and rear edges of said member, of a landside having a straight upper edge iitting against said horizontal rib and having a forwardly and inwardly extending projection formed on its upper edge engaging the rear end of the rib, the landside being further formed near its ront end with a lug fitting in said recess in the saddle and at its lower edge on its inner side with a longitudinal flange extending under the lower edge of the saddle, said flange having an abrupt front end bearing against the vertical shoulder on the lower edge of the saddle.
6. The combination with a plow saddle, of a share fitted thereto and having a vertical shoulder at the rear end of its point and having its rear edge curved upwardly and rearwardly above said shoulder, and a landside interlocked with the saddle and having its front end formed with a vertical shoulder engaging the vertical shoulder on the share and a curved edge above said shoulder corresponding to the curved front edge of the saddle and engaging the rear Curved edge of the share, the said engaging shoulders and edges of the share and landside being beveled whereby the front end of the landside will extend under the edge of the share and be thereby held to the saddle.
7. rlhe combination of a saddle having a horizontal rib on its landside face, said rib having a downwardly beveled lower side and an upwardly and rearwardly extending inwardly and forwardly beveled rear end, the saddle being further provided with a non-circular recess below said rib and the rear portion of the lower edge of the saddle being out away and beveled downwardly and inwardly and having a vertical shoulder formed at the front end of said cut-away portion, a landside having its upper edge beveled inwardly and downwardly to engage the lower side of the rib and provided with an upwardly and inwardly extending projection to engage the rear end of the rib, the landside being provided with a nonoircular lug near its front end engaging the recess in the saddle and the front end of the landside extending downwardly and forwardly from its upper edge in a curve corresponding to and registering with the curved front edge of the saddle and terminat-ing in a vertical shoulder, a flange on the inner side of the landside at the lower edge of the saine engaging the cut-away portion of the lower edge of the saddle having its front end fitting against the vertical shoulder in said edge of the saddle and eX- panding laterally and inwardly towardits rear end, and a share fitting over the front edge of the saddle and having its rear edge fitting against and overlapping the vertical shoulder and curve of the front end of the landside.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
