Description

JOHN R. HEDGEsjoF eLENWooD, AssIGNoR To HIMsnLr AND initiate'l TINE e sPAnKs, or BUWAL@ N. Y;
Letters Patentlvo: 105,680, zum .my 26,1570.
lIMPRO'VlilllEilil'il.' IN HQRSE-I-QWER t The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, JOHN R.'HEDGns,of Glenwood, iu the county of Erie and Stateof New York, have invented an Improvement in Horse-Powers, of which the following is a specication: c
` My invention relates to the providing ofhorse-pow'- ers with drivngfbelts for `directly transmitting their motion to, and operating other machines, especially wood-sawing machines and o It consists in the arrangement of adjustable guidepulleys upon the bed-frame outside of `the track, and
y in such position with reference Ito a driving-pulley upon the main central shaft as to conduct and guide y power;
B, the central `vertical'driving-shaft, which receives motion from a sweep or sweeps, O, through anysutable intervening mechanism, (not shown in the drawin f;) A i i1) is a ily-wheel mounted on the lower end of the shaft B; and
d is a wrist-pm, which connects with the pitman when the power is used for cross-cut sawing.
E :E are the ways, attached to cross-pieces of the bed-frame, between which plays the cross-head, to which the outer end of such pitman is attached.
In driving a, circular- "saw, I attach to the fly-wheel, by bolts i c', so as to be easily removable, a band- .crease of power to' overcome.
wheel, H, from which a band, lJ, connects directly with the pulley K ou the saw-mandrel.
L L are two guide-pulleys, mounted on pendent i .the bed and under the. treadwayvhich covers the bedframe, and also steady the belt as it leaves the pulleys to connect with the elevated pulley K on the horizontal saw-mandrel.A 4 Heretofcre, when employed indriving a circular saw, the motion vfrom the horse-power has been communicatethbymeans of a bevel wheel ou the lower, p
end of the central shaft A, which gears with a bevel pinion on the'end of a horizont-al shaft, from the outer end of which a'baud is connected with a pulley on the.
saw-mandrel'. Y
This' method involves the cost of the horizontalshaft and bevel-gear, and occasions au unnecessary amount of friction, which requires a consequent in- It adds the weight of this shaft and gearing to the horse-power, which reu-4 derslthe latter laborious to handle and transport, heside requiring an extra amount of time and trouble toset'and arrange it, all of which extra cost, weight, friction, power, time and labor,- are saved and avoided bythe use of my improved arrangement.
What I claim as my invention is vThe arsangementof the guide-pulleys L L, bed A, band J,pulley K, and band-wheel H on the main driving-shaft of a horse-power, substantially as and for'the purpose hcreinbei'ore set forth.
' J.' B. HEDGES. Witnesses:
J AY Hinter, J oHN J. BONNER.
