aosaaso.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE L. ICOR- CORANv and GEORGE A. DOBYNE, citizens of the United States, and residingat St. Louis, in the. State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ,Shoe- Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoe ,sole sewing machines and particularlyv to that type known as inseam sewing machines, e., ma-
- chines. for lsewingthe inseam of a welt or a This invention is an improvement on the ent No. 412304,. granted Oct. 8, 1889 to French and Meyer.'
The objects of this invention are to improve the machine of the above patent so as to simplify its construction and the arrangement of its parts and actuating mechanisms, so that the machine will be capable of'being run at high speed.
The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings in which: i
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine embodying this invention, a part of one of the brackets forming the frame or head being cut away to show-the cam and links, Fig. 2 is a -front elevation, Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation sho-Wing the awl and its actuating mechanism, and Fig. 4t is a section on the line 4 4 Fig. 3.
In the drawings those partsco'rresponding to like parts in said patent have been designated by the same reference characf ters as in said patent to which patent reference is had for details of construction. The frame or head A, the drive shaft A, the ca'm wheels A5 and A5, the awl carriage B .operated from the cam 'wheel A5 through the lever A and having a depending porlerated by ,'diife'rent mechanism'. n D5 upon the thread-linger rock shaft D5 has tion B for supporting the channel guide lever a5 and its channel guide a', the needle a5, the thread looper B2 and its lever Bx operated from the camwheel C', the sliding gage B5 and. its locking mechanism, the welt guide a5 its sliding bar N5 and its locking means, are all constructed and arranged as in saidpatent and need not therefore be described in det-ail. 'The thread-finger d is constructed as in said patent, but isop- The arm Speoicationof Letters Patent.
u Application filed Ju1yy21,
Patented iuamsgiei'a. 1911.- serial No. $539,835."
vpivotally connected thereto y.one endl of a link or bar 10 which is provided, at its other -end with a slotted head 11 having. a sliding has mounted thereon a cam roll`12 engaging cam Wheel D. ranged to operate the thread-finger in the other mechanism as in said patent.
The take-up lever b2 and -the auxiliary in said patent, b ut are actuated by different mechanism. The arm C3 on'the take-up rock shaft C5 is pivotally connected to one end of a link or bar 15 the other end of 'which is provided with a slotted head 16 having a slidingbearing on the drive sha-ft .A.. The link 15 has mounted thereon a cam roll 17 engaging a cam groove 18 in thev left hand face of the cam wheel D. The cam groove 18 is so constructed as to operate the take-up in the same timed relation with respect to the other mechanism as in said-patent. The awl a and its lever A5 are constructed and operate as in said patent, but are actuated by different mechanism.. The awl lever is mounted upon the carriage B to oscillate toward and from the Work, and is arranged to move with the carriage tol-'eed the work. The arm 20is slotted or forked to receive a block 21 pivotally mounthaving a sliding bearing upon the drive shaft A', The link is provided with a cam 'roll 24 engaging a cam groove 25 on the right hand face of t-he cam wheel C. In order to more firmly support the link 22 against sidewise movement, a guide 26 is provided 'which is secured to the head A and supports and guides the link in its moveto operate the awl in the same timed relation with respect to the other mechanism as in said patent. lThe awl and its carrying lever A3 move with the carriage B during' the feeding movements, but the sliding connection between the arm 20 und the block 2l permits of this movement, while the link will be supported and guidedlpy -its guide26.
The movement is transmitted direct to the practically a direct connection between the a'rms D5, C5 and'20 and their actuating cams.
same timed lrelation with respect to the' 65 bearing upon thedrive shaft A. This link a cam groove 13 on'the left hand face/of the This cam groove is artake-up b5 are constructed and operate as n ed upon one end of a link '22, the other end of which is provided with a slotted head 23 ments. The cam groove 25 is constructed l operated parts, due to the fact that there is A plurality-of connecting levers and links are therefore dispensed with, and the application of the forces by the actuator members to the actuated members is direct. The links 10, and 20 may be of light construction, in view of the fact that they can' be made of comparatively thin steel bars. The inertia of these moving links is there- 'fore small, irst due 'to their light Weight,
second due to their relatively small movement,and third due to the fact that they move in the direct-ion of their length. The machine can therefore vbe run at very much higher speed than machines in Which the connections are made through swinging members or levers, since the vibration .Will be less, keeping in mind that vibration is the factor which determines the speed of a machine. The construction is also simpler as in prior machines. Thus it will be noted that the height of the machine has been reduced and the head itself has been reduced that the' cams are always in fullyiev which down to the level of the` drive\shaft Anse struction shown and described;
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. In a shoe so-le sewing machine, .the combination of a machine head, a driving shaft thereon, a cam Wheel on said shaft having a plurality of cam grooves in one side thereof, a plurality ofthread engaging members, rock shafts for supporting said members and mounted on said head, arms mounted on said rock shafts and positioned on one side of said head," links connected at one of their ends With said arms, saidy links having at their other ends sliding bearings eX- tending across said driving shaft andl positioned on one side of said cam Wheel, andv cam rolls on said links engaging said cam grooves. v
2. In a shoe sole sewing machine, the combination of a machine head, a driving shaft.
on said head, a cam on said shaft, a pivotally mounted aWl having a slotted arm, a link having a block engaging said slotted arm, guides on said head for supporting said link for sliding movement thereon, and a cam roll on said link engaging said cam.
3. In a shoe sole sewing machine, the combination of'a machine head, a driving shaftv n said head, aacam on.sa i d shaft,`a pivotally mounted aWl, a laterally movable carriage for said aWl, a guide on said head, a link mounted on said head to slide in said guide and having a cam roll thereon engaging said cam, and means forv slidingly con` necting said link with said aWl to actuate the same and permit lateral movement of said awl.
In testimony whereof We atiX our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
