RIVES D. WEBB, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
PAY-AS-YOU-ENTER CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 1 3, 1912.
Patented Mar. 18, 1913.
Serial No. 690,570.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Rlvns D. \Vnen, of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pay- As-YouEnter Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and} exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide simple and highly efficient means for insuring the registration of the number of passengers carried by a car.
A further object is to provide means of the character stated especially adapted to cars of the P. A. Y. E. type. And a further object is to provide means at two different points on a car for actuating a single recorder, and to enable such means to be automatically placed in or out of commission in respect to either point, as the trolley pole is shifted.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing two registers and means for operating them. Fig. 2- is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the case of one of the registers. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View of a car equipped with my invention. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the register-operating steps in its normal position. Fig. 5 shows the same parts when being actuated. Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of one of the doors and means for operating it. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of a car, showing diagrammatically the means for shifting the register-actuating means. Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic view showing the registeractuating means connected to two trolley poles.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a car of the P. A. Y. E. type having at each end, at one side, an exit 2 and at the other side an entrance 3 and exit 4, the latter being separated by a railing 5. lVhen either exit 2 is to be used the opposite entrance and exit are out of commission. The exits 2 are controlled by sliding doors 6 which are nor mally held closed by latches 7 engaging hooks 8 thereof, and when released from the latches the door will be drawn open by a spring 9. The closing of the door is effected by the motorman pulling on a cable 10, but other means may be employed both for opening and closing the doors. Each door 6 carries at its lower end a plate 12 extending at right angles therefrom and designed to project over the step of the car when the door is closed, and to extend beneath the framework when the door is open. Similar doors are also provided for the entrances 3 and exits 4, but the doors for the entrances are not provided with step-covering plates 12. Both of the doors for the entrances 3 and exits 4 are under the control of the conductor.
The means for disengaging the latches from the doors may be widely varied; it forms no part of my present invention. I have shown in Fig. 6, the retaining latch 7 connected to a bell crank 13 which may be operated by a press button in the floor of the car similar to the means now employed for discharging sand or operating the alarm bells.
At one end of the car, mounted at any suitable point on the framework, are recorders 14. These recorders are designed to be automatically actuated by each passenger on leaving the car. Each recorder is connected to operating devices at the exits 2 and 4, but is capable of being operated by only one device at a time. The specific construction of the recorder itself is immaterial and may be widely varied; and likewise the means for operating the recorder allows of a wide latitude in selection. I prefer, however, to use a recorder which will be automatically actuated by the movement of a single rod, such as 14, to make an imprint on paper, or other suitable substance,-which is carried from one spool to another, as in Fig. 2, the paper being wound from one spool to the other as the recorder actuating rod is returned to its normal position. Any suitable means may be employed for effect ing this result, such as a ratchet pinion and rack.
The particular means shown for operating the recorders comprises plates 15 which extend over the car steps at the exits, and which are normally held raised by springs 16 encircling guide pins extended into openings in the steps. One of these guide pins of each plate is elongated so that, when the plate is depressed by the weight of a passenger leaving the car, such pin will engage a pivoted member 17 beneath the step, such member being connected to the recorder actuating rod by a cable 19. As the reccrder actuating member returns to its normal position, after the weight of the passenger is removed, one of the spools is partially rotated to effect the winding of the paper.
For the purpose of enabling a recorder to be operated by either device connected therewith, each actuating rod H is connected to the two members 17 of opposite exits by the cables 19 and a shiftable member 20, with which the rod 1 engages. Each member 20 is in the form of a curved plate having a curved slot or groove in which a laterally projecting lug 21 of rod let is designed to fit. The two members 20 of the two recorders are connected by a link 22, by moving which the members 20 may be shifted relatively to the recorder actuating rod so as to render the same subject to control by either of the respective cables 19. The manner of shifting the connecting link 22 may be widely varied, but preferably 1- provide for effecting this by the act of re versing the position of the trolley pole. For this purpose, in Fig. 7, I have shown the pole as carrying at its lower end an eccentric 25 which fits within a ring 26 which is connected at its opposite ends by cables 27 to the shifting link 22. Hence as the trolley pole is reversed so also the recorder actuating means will be shifted. \Vhen two poles are alternately used, the link 22 may be shifted by raising and lowering the poles, cables 28 connecting the latter to the links, as shown in Fig. 8.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. By means thereof an accurate register may be kept of the passengers since it is necessary that all should step on the recorder actuating plates 17 in alighting. It will be observed that the same recording mechanism may be operated by corresponding means at different points on the car; and that when the trolley pole is reversed the actuating means on the side of the car from which the passengers will alight is alone set for opera tion, and the transfer from the means on one side to the other is automatic.
I claim as my invention:
1. A car of the P. A. Y. E. type having exits on its opposite sides, a recorder, means located at each exit and connected to the recorder for actuating the same, and means for rendering one actuating means effective and the other ineffective on the recorder.
2. A car of the P. A. Y. E. type having exits on its opposite sides, separate doors for said exits, steps at the exits, means car ried by the doors extending over said steps, recorders, means mounted on each step for actuating the recorders, and shiftable means for allowing the recorders to be operated by either of the before mentioned means on one side of the car when the respective door is opened, the corresponding means on the opposite side of the car being at that time ineffective.
3. A car of the P. A. Y. E type having exits on its opposite sides, a recorder, means located at each exit and connected to the recorder for effecting the operation thereof, means for rendering either of the actuating means effective and the other ineffective to operate the recorder, and means for shifting the last mentioned means.
4. The combination with a car having opposite exits, a recorder, and means at each exit for operating the recorder, of shifting means for rendering the recorder operative by either actuating agency, a trolley pole, and means actuated by the trolley pole and connected to said shifting means for automatically changing the position thereof as the position of the trolley pole is reversed.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
