WALL-PLUG.
Apphcatlon 0CtOb1 0,
To all whom it may c0noern:
Be it known that I, MiLroN O. l/VICKS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Glen Cove, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVall- Plugs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wall plugs designed for use in concrete, brick or similar walls for the purpose of securing thereto studding or nailing cleats or strips for various purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is also designed for use as a spacer whereby the distance between the studding or nailing cleats or strips secured or designed to be secured to a wall of the class specified may be easily regulated without kind; a further object being to provide plugs of the class specified for the purpose of securing windows or other frames in concrete walls, and which may also be used for other purposes.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a. plan view of one of my improved wall plugs ready for use; Fig. 2 a front view thereof; Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l and showing the plug as used in a brick wall.
In the practice of my invention I provide a plug a of the class specified and which comprises a yoke-shaped form produced from a sheet metal blank folded centrally to form a closed inner end a and an open outer end a and the sides of the form are pro vided at its open outer end with oppositely directed flanges a having nail holes a and the side plates of the form are provided at spaced intervals with transverse lips or projections a which are formed from the material thereof and which extend outwardly and forwardly and the formation of which produces in said sides corresponding slots or openings a and one of the lips or projections a on one side of the form and adjacent to the open end thereof is formed into a keeper a through which is passed a gage Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 18., $18.
1911. Serial No. 652,547.
rod 5. Tie opposite sides of the form a are also prot uded with inwardly directed prongs or pro ect1ons a and said plug is provided with a core 0 of wood or other suitable material which is held therein by the teeth or prongs a which are stamped from the material of the sides of the form,
and by transversely folded strips (Z also formed from the material of the sides of the form and at the ends of the side flanges a, said strips cZ being folded transversely of the front edge or face of the core 0 as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3; and serving to hold the core 0 in place and also to prevent the spreading of the sides of the form at the open end thereof.
in Fig. 3 I have shown the method of using my improved wall plug or plugs in a brick wall 6, and in this operation the said plugs are placed in a horizontal space 0 between horizontal rows of bricks and are inclosed by the plaster or cement placed be tween the bricks, it being understood that an amount of said plaster or cement is first placed on the bottom row of bricks, after which the plugs are laid in position as shown in 3, after which said plugs are covered with additional plaster or cement, after which the top bricks are laid on the said plaster or cement and on the plugs, the said plugs being inclosed by the plaster or cement,
lVhen used in connection with brick work or brick walls as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the side flanges o have no particular function except to locate the plugs in the wall, and the studding, cleats or strips f are secured to the wall by means of nails 7 driven therethrough and into the cores 0 of the wall plugs, and it will be understood that the cement enters the transverse slots or openings a in the sides of the form of the plug, and said slots or openings thus serve, in connection with the forwardly directed tongues or projections, to hold said plugs in the wall.
It will be obvious that my improved wall plug may be used in concrete constructions by placing them in the desired positions at the time of forming the parts to which they are to be secured.
My improved wall plug or plugs may also be used for securing the frames of windows or doors in concrete or other walls and many other uses will suggest themselves to those familiar with this class of devices, and
(IlIQHP'PS in and modifications of the conon herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, \iithont de mrting from the spirit of my inyentioiji or sacrificing: its advantages.
Having fully described my inyentiom What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
A Wall plug of the character described, comprising a main body of sheet metal of yoke shai ied :torm haying; outwardly directed flanges on each side of the open end of the same, each side of the main body having; slots or openings and outwardly extending lips or projections, each extending 15 the greater part of the Way across the plug, a Wooden core inserted. in the said main body and secured in place by inwardly projecting teeth and by a strip folded across the opening of the main body over the said core.
In testimony that E claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in presence Oil the subscribing Witnesses this 2nd day of October 1911.
