Description

B.P.CALLEY.. I DESIGN DIE FOR ORNAMENTI'NG.
No. 105537. PatentedJuly 26, 1870.

Letters Patent No. 105,637, dated Jul 26, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN DESIGN-DIES I'OR ORNAMENTTNG.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and; making part of-the same To all whom t't-may concern.-
I, BENJAMIN EGALLEY, of Saugus, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Design-Dies to be used for Ornamenting Boots. Shoes, Oollars, Rufiles, and other articles upon which dies, punches, stamps, 800., are used for ornamenting, of which the iollowmg 1s a specification Nature and Object of the Invention.
The uatureof my invention consists in an improvement in that class of diesin which the same feature or ornament is repeated many times, and in which it is desirable thata certain space shall be ornamented,
and each feature of the ornamentation be complete,
that is, the initial and final feature shall be whole and at the right point. I
Said improvement consists in grading the series of features or individual ornaments, so that a number of vthem, say six, for instance, taken consecutively at one portiou of the die, would vary in length from the same number taken consecutively on another portion of the die. Thus'the same die may be nsedto ornament articles of difierent sizes, and still all of the features of the ornament would be perfect, the-object heing to make a single die or dink do the work of many.
diiierent lengths, upon each of which the same numher of ornaments is impressed or cut;
Figure 4 represents the same as fig. 3, except that the feature used as an ornament is different.
. V General Description. The die may be made as a hand-die, as represented in fig. 1, or may be made to fit any of the power machines in use for cutting, stamping, punching, print-'- inc. &c.
The die itself may be made of a series oi. any desired ornaments, and may be so constructed as to cut,
stamp, perforate, or print, as may be desired.
My invention consists in so constructing thedie that the ornament is repeated exactly, except in size.
Thus the scallopsfrom A toward M gradually in; crease, but not so' much as to interfere with the ornamental appearance of the work when applied,as the whole'length of the die is not to he used on any one article.
The die repres'entcrLisespecially adapted to the ornamentation of the. upper part of a hoot 01' shoe,
and "is .to he used as follows:
If I wish to ornament the quarter of a womans shoe of the size N o; 3, 'I use that part of the die be tween A and G, including six scallops. If No; 4, I use'thatpart of the die between B and H, including six scallops, and soon, as the quarter becomes'wider, I must use that part of the die'in whichthe scallops become larger, until the quarter becomes so wide that another whole scallop-may he used, that is, I may use seven scallops instead of six.
If the quarter is so made as not to'cont-ain six scallops, then five of the widest maybe used; and then,- for still smaller sizes, five narrower scallops may be used, 860.
In figs. 3 and 4, I show different designs, but the characteristic isth'e same, that is; the features of the design are graded, so that a certain number of them on one part of the die do not occupy the same length of space that-the same number do on another part of the die.
My system of ornamentation may be applied to a great variety-of purposes, such as embossing, printing, perforating, pinking, &7c., on an endless list of articles.
I claim as my invention- The design-die herein shown and described.
- BENJAMIN F. OALLEY.
