Description
academia 33mm wi anosnqeounnn, OF FORT SCOTT, KANSAS.
Letters Patent No. 105,634, dated July 26, 1870; antedatediune 9, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part I01 the same 10 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMOS H. BOURNE, of Fort Scott, inth'e county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented a new and improved Umber Come pound; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same. V
This invention relates to a new compound of earths and minerals, to be hereinafter described, for making umber for use in painting. l
These substances have never been designated by anyparticnlar name, and hear so close resemblance to the common earths as to have escaped notice as being of special value untildiscovered by me.
For convenience I have, however, designated as No. 2 the inside contents of the hollow bowlders found in the coal banks; as No. 3, a red earth; as No. 4, the yellowish-brown earth found in pockets in the coal banks; and as No. 5, the exterior or shells of the bowlders above mentioned.
Nos. 2, 4, and 5, are found in southern Kansas and western Missouri, and No.3 near Fort Scott, Kansas.
To form the compound for umber,1I mix and grind together the above-named ingredients, in about the following proportions:
Seventy-five parts No. 3, eight and one-third parts No.2, eight and one-third parts No. 4, eight and onethird parts No. 5, which produce, when so mixed and compounded, an article of umber serving as an excellent substitute for the umber of commerce now in use, and which may be produced inuch cheaper;
It may be used in the raw'state or burned in the usual way.
To make a lighter 'or darker shade, I change the proportions of the several parts according fto. their colors, as required. a
The said compound is mixed with oils for painting in the same way that the umber of commerce is mixed;
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent- The improved compound of the earths or minerals hereinldescribed, in the' proportions and manner substantially as specified.
A. H, BOURKE.
