Bc it known that we, CLAYTON E. FREDER- iciisox and lvr BxLnwtN, residing, respectively, in the cities of San Francisco and Alameda, counties of San Francisco and .llamedzny and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Life-Saving Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention. which generally in the nature of an improved life-saving net, is more especially designed for forming a part of lire apparatus for cities, and it has for its object to provide an inexpensive, compact and easily manipulated body catching means, easily mountable upon an auto truck and so arranged. whereby the truck with the catching in xans can be backed up against a burning` building and easily controlled for catching persons who jump from the windows or the top of the said burning` building.

Our invention also has for its object to provide a life saying apparatus of the kind generally outlined in which the apparatus can be almost instantly set up for use by cranking the same and the catching means is readily folded up when not in use.

lilith other objects in view that will be hereinafter apparent, our invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter explained specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

ln carrying out our invention. and in the preferred form thereof, we employ an auto truck l of any approved type, and which includes the longitudinal angle bars 2 2,

upright brackets S and upon each opposite pair of which, (three opposite pairs being' shown) is mounted a transverse bar 4 that ferins the bed or supportfor the catching means, the peculiar construction of the cooperative parts of which, form the essentials of our invention. The cross bars 4, extend laterally of the trut-i: and on the outer ends of each of the said bars 4 is mounted a bearing box 5, those at each sid-e alining to accommodate the roel; shaft-s C. A series of side bars l" are lixedly connected to each rock shaft G to roel; therewith, the upper ends of which curve upwardly, as at T0, whereby, when the parts are folded or closed, as in F 5, for traveling to and from the place of fire, the several parts will be compactly closed or folded up over the top of the truck.

8 designates a main shaft that extends loir gitudinally of and is disposed midway of the truck, the said shaft being journaled in short upright brackets S0 mounted on the cross bars 4, is best shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

9 designates double grooved guide pulleys, one of which is provided for each opposing pair of side bars 'T and the said pulleys are keyed upon the central or main shaft 8.

10 and Q0 designate cable connections for the opposite side bars T, one of which l0, connects with the upper encs of the arms at one side passes around one part of one of the corresponding double pulleys and passes to and connects with the lower endof the said side arm 7, the other cable 20 likewise connecting the other side b ar 7.

l2 designates a worin on the shaft 8 that meshes with a gear 9 on a transverse shaft 90 journaled in upright brackets 91 that extend up from one of the end cross frames.

Shaft 9 at one end has a lateral stud 92 for cooperating with the soc-liet 93 thatforms part of a crank shaft 94 and which has a bayonet slot 95 for engaging the stud 92.
