-zontall weones right of Way, and this element is the wheelengaging lever 6. This lever 6, operating below and adjacent the ball I of the rail 2, cannot Well be moved, saving through the instrumentality. of .the depending Wheel ange. The device, therefore, is well adepted for use upon Streetcar lines and 'else Vwhere, Where it is desirable that all of -t-he operating portions of the "switch throw be disposed below the level of the track. Pedestrians and vehicles cannot well actuate the switch throw herein disclosed, andthere are practically no protruding `elements in the ystructure liable to be disarranged or broken in this manner.
ln the appended claims, the Words horiand vertically ere'used to explain t e movements of the members 14 and 24, the ,same constituting the secondary and primary levers, respectively. The words horizont-ally and vertically are used in a relative sense only, it being under stood that upon curves, where one rail is elevated above the other, and upon a down grade, vthese levers willof necessity move in planes which approximate only, the hori- I zontal and the vertical.
Having thus described the invention, what 1s claimed 1s z* l,
l. In a device of the class descrlbed, o.
switch point; an actuating element opera-- the switch point and' tively connected with supported intermediate its ends upon a single fulcrum for tilting movement both horizontally and vertically, a portion of said element being engageable by a passing car, when said element is moved vertically, ,to throw the switch point, the horizontal movement of'said element serving to move t'ne switch point; and means engageeble by the wheel of a passing car, to move said element vertically.
2. In a device of the class described, a primary lever supported intermediate its ends to tilt in two planes; a secondary lever engaged with the primary lever to swing the'primary lever in one plane, lthereby to position a portion of the -primary lever for engagement by e passing car, the primary lever being slidable transversely upon the secondary lever in the other plane; a switch point; a connection between the Switchpoint and the primary lever, whereby the switch point Will be thrown by the primary lever,
@i sie) when the primary lever is slid noon secondary lever and is movediin menthe? plane by a passing cargend mechanism o e eratively connected with the secondery le. and engageable by a passing car, to actus the secondary lever in the first named plano.
In a device of the class described, supporting member; a primary lever ful crumed upon top ofthe supporting member for movement both horizontally and vertically; a spring thrusting the primary iever 6, against the supportingn member, to maintain the primary lever horizontally position j means upon one endof the primary over :tor engagement by a passing car, to swing i the primary lever, horizontally; a switeh 7@ point ;..a connection between the switch pointA i land the primary lever, whereby the hori zontal movement, of the primary lever will actuate the Switchpoint; a secondary lever supported intermediate its ends and engeged with the primary lever to tilt 'the same vertically; and a movable member, engageable by the wheel or a passing car, to actnate the secondary lever. l
ln a device of the class describedfa 3 main line rail; a siding rail; a switch point; e wheel-engaging lever fulcrumcd adjacent the main line rail; a secondary lever pivn otally supported intermediate its ends, and engaged at one end with the wheeleeugaging lever; aprimary lever fulcrumed intermediete its ends for movement in two planes, the primary lever being engageable by the secondary liever, for movement in one plane, thereby to position a portion of 'the lever ior engagement by a passing car and being slidable upon the secondary lever in the other plane; n link connecting the primary lever with the switch point, whereby a sliding movement oi' the primary lever upon the secondary lever in said other plane, by the passing' car, will actuate Athe `,switch gpoint; and spring means operating upon the .primary lever to oppose the swinging of the primary lever by the secondary lever.
ln testimony that l claim the foregoing as myosin, 'l have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
