CLARK A. SIGAFOOS, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
PAPER-FOLDING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Cnisau A. SIGAFOOS, a citizen of the United St tes, and a resident of Qinaha, in the co nty of Douglas and State of Nebraska, c invented certain new and useful lin veinents in Paper-Folding Machines, of which the iollowing is a specification.
Mv invention relates to paper folding nyichines and more particularly to supplementinserting devices for use on such machines.
it is the object of my invention to provnle in a supp]uncut-inserting device for paper folding machines a means for accurately gaging the feed position or the inserted sheets, and positive means for engaging the sheet and carrying it into proper-pos tion relative to the main sheet with which itis to be folded.
Constructions embodying my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a partial end elevation of: afolding machine having my inserting device applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of the gage-bar, clamp-plate and insert-ta ble, Figs. 3 and t are detail vertical sectional views illustrating the operation of the nserting device, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the gage-bar, clamp-plate and drop-knits.
In the drawings only those portions of the folding machine are shown which are pertinent to the structure and operatlon of my inserting desice, which portions comprise the machine frame 1, the folding rolls 2, the drop-knife or tapper 3. and the driving-shaft a from which the folding rollsand drop-knife are actuated. lhe insert-table 5 is supported upon the frame 1 by suitable standards 6 and a crane-arm 7, as shown, the table being slightly inclined toward its inner edge which is positioned adjacent to the folding rolls 2. At the ends of the table, ad
oining the inner edge thereof, the bars 8 are extended out therefrom, and in the said bars are journaled the ends of the gage-bar 9. To the lower side of said bar is secured the clamp-plate 10 which extends from the bar 9 toward the edge of the insert-table. At one end of the bar 9 a stud 11 is extended downward therefrom and to said stud is connected a coil spring 12 of which the opposite end is connected with the table as shown. The said spring normally turns the bar so that the plate 10 is held in the posi- Syeoification of Letters Patent.

: tion shown in Fig. 3, a stop 13 beingar ganged at the edge of the table, as shown'in big. 2, which stop is engaged by the plate and the swinging edge thereof prevented from being raised above the edge of the table. Upon the drop-knife are secured two or more needles 14 or which the points extend slightly below the lower edge of the knlfe. in the plate 10, at positions below the said needles, are made the recesses or depressions 15, shown in Fig. 5, the depth of said depressions being'such that the points of the needles wiil not touch the bottoms of the recesses when the drop-knife is depressed and engages the plate. i
In the operation of the machine the sheets to be inserted are placed upon the table 5 in the usual manner. At each operation of the machine one of the sheets A is moved down manually to a position such that the edge thereof engages the bar 9 and rests upon the plate 10, as shown in Fig. 3. 'In case the paper used is soft and pliable the plate 10 supports and prevents sagging of the portion of the sheet which extends beyond the edge of the table. After the main sheet B has been carried into proper position above the folding rolls, as shown. the drop-knife is depressed and engages the sheet- A, clamping the same against the plate 10, and the needles ll at the same time penetrating the sheet and extending into the recesses 15 in the plate. Continued downward movement of the drop-knife turns the clampplate (.lownward as shown in Fig. i c. carries the sheet A down into engagementwith the sheet B, and starts both sheets through the folding rolls, the edge of the insert-sheet A along its entire length being clamped between the drop-knife and swinging plate until theinsert-sheet is brought into engagement with the main sheet B. As the dropknife is raised the spring 12 returns the gage-bar and clamp-plate to their original or normal positions.
It should be noted that when the parts are in the normal positions the lower edge of the drop-knife is in such relation to the gage-bar that the sheet A cannot be pushed above and past the bar. It will also be noted that owing to the clamping of the sheet between the drop-knife and the plate 10, and the penetration of the sheet by the needles 1%, there is no possibility of the sheet slipping relatively to the drop-knife and iii thus failing to be inserted in proper aiineinent with the main sheet.
New hating described my invention, What 1 claim and desire to secure Letters ent is:
