{"QHENRY c. SMITH, `'or LAWRENCE, KAN-sas, Assienon Jro AMERICAN MORTISINGV-MAOHINE COMPANY, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
i Letters Patent No. 105,603, dated .Telly 19, 187 0.
IMPROVEMENT IN' MORTISQKING--MACHINR The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 0f the Same ne a known dat r, HENRY c. snm, of Lawrence, State of Kansas, have invented certain Imp provements in Mortising-Machincs, of which the f 'ollowing is a specification.
'lhe invention relates `to certain improvements to .l a mortising-machine patented by me the` 4th day of September, A. D. 1860, said Letters Patent being l numbered 29,920, and said improvements relate chiefly to the model of operating the machine. y It will be perceivefl, by examining the drawings of the original pati ent, that the machine is operated by `a lever withv two arms, and upon the end ot' the short arm is attached a-pawl, with a claw meshinginto a 1'atchetwheel,said wheel being secured to a shaft bearing pinions which` gear into al stationary rack, Ste., and that these gearings are moved by the operating lever in working the l machine.
These deviccs for operating the machine failed in V"practice onaccount of their complexity, also being unwieldy and liable to get out of order, and the im- .l provements are to remedy these defects.
Description of theprjawing, &c. The"accompanying drawing shows all the parts l sought to be patented as improvements in`this device.
The letter Arepresents the block which bears thc link l tothe ringdever or-pawl./nt.`
'n is' the lug playing into the ratchet o, and o is a f ratchet operating -as a nut upon the upright screw P,
which operates as a shaft, by which lthe block A, re-
` ceiving the frame'to which ,is attached the cutting apparatus, is raised orlowered atppleasure.
q is a. crank attached to the upper end of the screw l I, by which the block may be raised or lowered.
fr is a shaft, the lower-part ot' which is a screw, the
lend of which rests upon the solid part of the frame B, upon which screw is a hooked nut, s; and.V t t are l l gauges attached to the horizontal part of the frame,
avhic'lii'restsupon the timber to be operated upon.
, lGeneral, Description. I-make use of the 'lever K' inoperating the ma-v chine. Itis pivoted to the block A, as will he seen by thedrawing, and also has a short-armed lever at its extremity, which armis slotted, and near itsv upper end has a pin, and around this pin passes a part of the link l, vmaking its'counection to it, which link is hooked into the 'pawl or ring-lever lm, which Y ring-lever lits loosely upon the upright screw l?. This 4 ring-lever has also a mortise, through which is a lug, n., meshing into the horizontal ratchet-wheel. raising the lever K, the short-armed lever k and link -l carry forward the ring-lever m, the lug n playing into the ratchet-wheel o and depressing the lever K. The pawl n isvpushed back for another turn, and at each depression of the lever K the cutting apparatus perihrxns its work.
Upon the shaft and screw r, I have placed ahooked nut, e. The use of this hooked nut is to Vfasten a chain upon one horn of the nut, passing the chain under the timber, and hooking it upon the other horn.
By turning the crank in one direction the machine will be made fast to the timber, and it is loosened again by turning the crank in another direction.
I have also placed gauges t't upon the horizontal part of the frame, by turning which downward over the edge of the timber the mortises will be cut in a true line, without measuring, 85e.
In thus arranging the feeding apparatus of the cut- `ting-machine, I have made the machine more eiiectivc, taking up less room, and renderefd it less likely to` getout of order, and less complex in its movements.
I claim- The combination and arrangement of the operating ylever K, the short-armed lever 7c, the link lthe pawl or ring-lever m, the lug n, operating the ratchet o, the ratchet o, the same being arranged and operating the screw I), and the screw P, the whole being arranged and operating the block A,'hearing the cutting device,.substantially in theV mannerV and for the purpose described.
Also, 'the arrangement ot Athe gauget upon the.
frame B, substantially for the purposedescribed.`
