Be it known that I, JOHN W. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alleene, in the county of Little River and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Method of Treating Human Hair, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a method for treating the human hair.

The substance employed as a dressing. consists of paraflin and refined petroleum, (first distillate) melted together, the mix.-

' ture when'cooled, having a consistency approximating that of cold tallow.

In use the unguent is first rubbed Welland. evenly into the hair, care being taken not to apply more than will effect thorough lu rication, as an excess would be objectiona le. The hair is now combed with 'a metallic comb that is initially heated toa degree that can just be borne when the comb is grasped by -the naked hand and the combing is continued untilthe comb iscooled to a point that will notcause the unguent to melt. The result of this treatment is that each strand of hair will become coated or waxed with paraflin and thus be rendered. sufiiciently stifi to resist the natural tendency to curl. As the initial heat will tend to dry most of the oil, there will be no dangerof thein dividual strands of hair adhering together, so that when the operation is complete, the treated hair will have the appearance of that which is naturally straight.

'In practice, the proportion of paraffin will be in excess of the petroleum, the latter being employed to retain the paraflin in the condition of a readily applied salve, and for this reason the use of the unguent will be free-from the objection attending that of emollients containing an excess of oily matter.

I claim:

1. The method oftreatin hair, which consists in app ying thereto a normally solid oleaginous dressing, and then combin the hair with a heated comb to cause t e hairs to be straightened and separated and individually coated with the dressing.

2.. The method. of treating kinky human hair which consists in applying thereto an unguent containing a wax, and then combingthe hair with a heated comb to cause the hairs to be individually coated with the wax.

' 3. The method, oftreating ,kinky, human hair" which .consists in applying. thereto an unguent containing a mineral'wax,'and then combing the hair with a heated comb to cause the hairs to be individually coated with the wax.

4. The method of treating kinkf human hair which consists in applying thereto an unguent containing a wax, and then combing the hairwith a heatedcomb to cause the hairs "to be individually, coated with the wax, and. continuing theoperation until the comb is comparatively cool.
