JOHNSON,- a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lrii`oe- Steamers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as,.will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaiiis t; make and use the same.
My invention relates to toe steamers, and' has for its object to provide a system for applying substantiallydry steam to shoes during their manufacture, whereby the leather is sufficiently softened to allow.shap ing without the objectionable and usual spotting and burning thereof.
Another 'object is to provide means for regulating-the flow of steam simultaneously through a plurality of Steamers located on*- f A. still further ob ject is to arrange the steam feeding pipes in such relation to the Steamers, that said pipes provide a drain for the steam which condensesgtherein.

As clearly shown in the. drawing, the main pipe. 2 is inclined from its valved end to the opposite end, whereby the condensed steam will ow from the steamer 7 to the main pipe 2, through the branch et, and thenceto the trap 9 located at a low point in' said pipe. Thus it will be seen that the main pipefEZ and branch lserve the double purpose of feed and drain pipes.r
In use, the Steamers are fed with steam from the steam supply pipe l through the valve 3, .suilicient steam being admitted through said valve to merely fill the pipes andvcylinders, t-hus allowing only the dry steam to rise through the apertures in the lip. vWhile the toe is still loose from the sole of the shoe, the toe of the lastis placed under the lip 8, while the upper part of the shoe (toepart), is raised on the top of the steamer'. In this position, the upper leather of the shoe receives the steam as it 'rises from the aforesaid' apertures, softening the same so that it may be formed into suchshapes as desired.
What I claim is l. A toe steamer comprising a main pipe, a steam cylinder connected therewith, a lip extending longitudinally of said cylinder and having apertures in the upper surfaces thereof,`and means for supplying substantiallyfrce and dry steam to said pipe, cyl inders and lips.
2. A toe steamer comprising a supply pipe, an inclined main pipe, a v alveconne'cting the upperend of'said main. pipe with said supply pipe, a trapat thelower endof` said main pipe, a cylinder,' and a perforated curved lip extending longitudinally of said cylinder.'
