MARTIN J. KATT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SCRUBBING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. KATT, a
ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to:
make and use the same.
This invention relates to scrubbing ma-. chines, and it more particularly relates to* a machine for scrubbing printing type.
It is well known that, in the process of manufacturing certain classes of printing type; for instance, wherein the type plates are cast from iron, steel or from other metal,
in sand molds; it becomes necessary to re-.
move the sand or other rough coating from the surface of the type plates before the same can be properly electro-plated, and therefore an object of the invention is to provide an improved machine onto which one or more printing type plates may be secured, and whereby said plates may be rotated on a horizontal plane, while one or more brushes are caused to reciprocate across the surfaces of said plates, for cleaning the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character in which all of the working parts are cooperatively related.
A still further object is to provide a ma chine of this character which is simple of construction, easy to manipulate and thoroughly eflicient in operation.
Other objects and advantages may be recited hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation view of the machine which embodies my invention, and, Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the main frame of the machine is represented by the numeral 5. This frame supports a bed plate 6 provided with a circular track on which is supported a work-table 8, through the medium of ball-bearings9. The work-table is preferably provided with the usual T slots 10, into which may be inserted Specification of Letters Patent.

bolts, not shown, for fastening a wooden base 11 onto the work-table, and onto this base may be secured an electro-type plate 12, by screws, not shown, or by other proper means.
Secured to the frame 5, on a plane above the work-table, is a pair of parallel trackmembers 13, by means such as bolts 14. These traclcmembers are preferably provided with V-shapecl grooves 15 in their top surfaces, in which are movably seated guides 16, the latter constituting portions of a cross-head 17. This cross-head extends across the machine bed 6 and is adapted to travel laterally across the work-table, along the trackmember 13.
A crank-shaft 18 is carried by the frame 5 and carries a crank 19 which is pivotally connected with the cross-head 17 by means of a connecting rod 20. The crank-shaft 18 also carries a main driver wheel 21 and a sub-driver wheel 22. The main driver wheel may be connected with any proper source of motive power, through the medium of a belt 23. The sub-driver wheel is connected with a worm-gear 24, through the medium of a worm 25, shafts 2-6 and 27, wheels 28 and 29 and a belt or chain 30. The worm-gear 24 is carried by a vertical shaft 31, which is rotatably seated in a bearing 32 and in fixed relation to the work-table 8.
The cross-head 17 is provided with a vertical threaded bore, in which is seated a correspondingly threaded brush carrier 33. The brush carrier is provided with a crankhandle 34, by which the brush carrier may be rotated, and thereby raised and lowered with relation to the cross-head and to the work-table. The brush carrier is also provided with horizontal apertures 35, which are adapted to register, alternatively, with a horizontal aperture in the cross-head 17 and to receive a pin 36, for holding the brush holder and brush in adjusted position.
While, in practice, I may employ several brushes and brush holders, like the one described, I herewith disclose but one. Iprefer to clamp the lateral brush holders 37 to the cross-head 17, and in laterally adjustable relation thereto, by means of set-screws 38. The cross heads 43 and tenons 41 may be provided with any proper means of vertical adjustment, as for instance, pins 39, each extending through an aperture in the slotted shank 40 and through one of the several holes in the tenon 41, said tenon being fitted into the slot 42. \Vhen it is desired to remove the brushes from the holders 37, the pins 39 may be removed, and the tenons 41 may then be taken out of the slots.
The brushes may be of any proper con struction, and are preferably held by the clamps 43, which comprise the depending arms 44, having retaining lugs 45, for engaging the lower lateral edges of the brushes. Set-screws 46 are provided for securing the brushes in the holders.
By thus providing three brushes in adjustable relation, all sizes of electrotype plates may be operated upon.
It will be seen that the machine herewith described and shown is fully capable of attaining the foregoing objects.
I do not limit my invention to the exact details of construction, combination and ar-' rangement of parts herewith disclosed; but, my invention may only be limited by a rea. son-able interpretation of the following claim.
'What I claim is:
In a scrubbing machine, a frame, a sta-' tionary base plate supported by the frame and having a journal bearing therein and a a table having a vertical shaft journaled in said bearing and having a circular track registering with the first said circular track and being supported thereby through the medium of suitable bearing elements, ahori- Zontally movable member above the table, brushes carried by said member and adapted to be moved thereby over the surface of work on the table, means for moving the brush carrying member, and means coacting with the first said means for rotating the work table.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARTIN J. KATT.
