CAN FLAN'GING AND BOBLE-SEMING MACHINE.
Application ed Beeember 3, 1939.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all 'wf/om t m ay concern Be itA known that l, AXEL JOHNSON, a
citizenvot' the United States, residing in San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful improvement in Can Flanging and Bonble-Seaming Machinesot which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in can thinning a d double seeming machines.
rl'he obj t of my invention is to provide an automa can body langing and double seaming machine of a simple, etlicient and durable construction suitable tor use in canning factories for closing tilled cans by don ble seeming the final heads or covers thereto, by means of which cans may' be so closed, rapidly and cheaply' and with certainty and uniformity in the production ot hermetically tight seams. lso to provide a machine which will operate with equal facility upon either flanged or nnanged can bodies, and this Without requiring any change, removal oj z .'nstment ot parts, the hanging devices or means being adaptedvto either torni flange upon an untlanged can body or to straighten, trite up and render uniform the flange of previously flanged can body'. ilse to provide a' machine in which the lianging or iiange straightening means will serve to trne up distorted can bodies at the mouth ends thereot to adapt the same for certain reception of the can heads or covers when automatically fed. Also to provide a machine which will operate to automatically feed both the can bodies and the can heads and to automatically discharge the closed or double seemed cans.y and in which the feed of the can lieads will be controlled by the presence or absence of a can .iexjposition to receive the head so that no can head will be fed unless a can is in position to receive it. Y
My invention consists in connection with upper and lower chucks for clamping the can head and cover together and holding themtrom rotation during the double seaming operation, and a rotary seaining head having double seaming` rollers, of external segmental Hanging dies adapted to open and close and embrace or clamp the mouth end of the can body, and an internal reciprocating tlanging die adapted to enter the month of the can bodyand turn a horizontel @enge thereon or to straighten and true up aprevionsly formed flange the can body is one which has' been already flanged rlille external and internal danging dies also serve by the internal and external pressure simultaneously exerted by *ehem upon the entire periphery ot' the can body at its month end, insideand oiitside, to true no the can body it it is distorted ont of and adapt it to properly receive th" an head or cover which is to be double seemed thereto. i
My invention farther consists in connection with these devices, of a jfeed table or supportingplate for the can bodies and an intermittently moving ,carrier having seg mental pockets to receive the can bodies and feed or move them along trom the ianging devices to the rotary seaming head, the carrier being furnished with a plnjality of segmental Hanging dies., encino which coperates in torn with an opening' and closing segmental tlanging die ca iiied by a movable can clamp on tne trame of the machine.
It fin-ther consists connection With'tliese parte, oi a conveyer for automatically delivering the can bodies to the carrier one by one. a holder for the can heads and feeder for automatically delivering the can heads one by one from the can head holder to the can body carrier.v which is furnished with a series of segmental can head receiving seats or shoulders adapted to receive support the can head directly above the can body in cooperation with a stationaryv head support or guidel The lower can chuck .or clamping disk by its upward reciprocating movement. raises the can body against,
the can head and thus lifts it from its so?- poxts or seats, and clamping ity against the upper stationary chuck preparatory to the seaming operation. connection with these parts, of means for controlling the operation of the can bead feeder by the presence or absence of a can body in the carrier to receive the can head as it is fed, so that no can head 'will be ted or discharged from the can head holder unless a can is presenty on the carrier tov receive it.
My invention further consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims. 1
in the accomnanying drawing formilt further consists in Utzl AVAILABLE CGP"14 'l will ' partly in section, on line of FigQS.

ln the drawing,- A represents the frame of the machine, B 'an intermittently moving' can body' carrier having segmental pockets I to receive the-cans, and segmental Hanging diesb1,` one 'for' each pocket k32,'andsegrnental can head seats '292, one 'for each pocket 7), C
i the feed table or supporting plate upon which the cans rest as they are moved along or around by. lthe carrierfi, an opening and closingfcairbody clamp having an efe ternal segment-alllanging'the (i cooperating' in turn with each of the' 'segmental flanging dies b1 on the carrier E, D1 an internal. reciprocating Hanging die, l!" a rotary seaming head carrying double scanning rollers f f1., Gr the upper stationary can chuck or clamp disk, G1 a lovveror reciprocating can chuck or clamp disk, H can head holder or magazine, H1 can head feed devices for feeding or delivering the can heads one by one from the holder or magazine H, H2 a device orccntrolling the operation of the can 'head feed devices by'contact, with the "an, E a conveyer for delivering the can bodies to the carrier B and feed table C7 and.
M a conveyer fordelivering the closed cans from the machine.
The frame A mayl be of any suitable construction, adapted to give support or mount` f ingfor the other parts of the machine.V
The can body carrier B is preferably a horizontally rotating turret or disk. It is secured to an upright shaft B1 which may be intermittently rotated required or given a step by step movement and locked in position, to enable each of its can body receiving pockets, vsegmental Hanging dies and can headseats to cooperate in turn with the can body clamp D and its external segmentai Hanging die (Zand internal or convex flanging dieDl, andwith the rotary double seaming head ahd can clamping chucks, by any .nitable operating means; thesanie prefer ably being a Geneva gear mechanism coml.
