Description

J. MoMAHON. v SUPPORT FOR MASONRY ARCHES AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 30, 1911.
Patented Mar. 11,1913.
vention is to provide a simple, strong and (p1 sca't JAMES McMAI-ION, or iviivv YORK, N. Y.
SUIP ORT OR MASONRY ARCHES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented M in. 11, 1913.
Application filed August 30; 1911. Serial No. 646,854.
provide a temporary support of beams or scaffolding upon which the arch floor or the like of brick or hollow tile is laid, and when the brick or tile have set the support is removed, leaving the complete arch or floor in position with its ends takinginto the I-beams or iron girders at the sides of the room. .xDit'ticulty has heretofore been experienced in safely anchoring the seatfolding and providing suitable means for removing the same after the need therefor is past, and the primary object of my ininexpensive support for the beams folding, which support may be rca t ily anchored infposition, and after the, arch or floor has set may be removed, permitting the scaffolding to fall and the arch to remain in position.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a skeleton iron structure adapted to recei e an arch or floor of brick or concrete, a plurality of my improved supports being shown in position; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; andtl ig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Stated in general terms, the invention includes a vertically adjustable supporting arm for the sea olding or the like and means for supporting said arm from a firm part of the building in course of construc tion.
Stated in more specific terms, the invention embodies an elongated, preferably cylindrical rod or bar on which the supporting arm for the sca'llolding is longitudinally adjustable, there being also a plate movable on the bar and having a hook end adapted to engage the flange of an I-beam or girder to hold the devicctirnny in suspended position.
Referring to thefaccon'ipanying drawing, and particularly tol igs. 2 and 3 thereof, 10 designates a rod oribar, preferably cylindrilcal in form, and screw threaded near one end [10 to receive acorrespondingly internally threaded hand libld or handle 11. Adapted to be arranged below/the handle 11 is an anchorage plate ,12 having the hooked end 13, the plate being/adapted to take over the flange of the I-bcam 14-. as shown in Fig. and hold the device firmly in suspended position. Near-tits opposite end the rod 10 is provided with )1 plurality of orifices 15 of a size to accommodate a cross-key or pin 1.6 such as shown in the uppermost of the series of orifices. The cross-key has an enlarged head 16 fto prevent its slipping through the orifices, and when the key is inserted in one or the orifices it projects at either side of the rod 10 and forms a stop for a hearing or supporting arm 17 having upturned ends 17 and adapted to support the scaffolding upon which the hollow tile or brickwork is built. As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing the arm 17 is really in the nature of a doubl sarm, the two branches thereof being connected by a boss 17* having formed therein an annular opening 17 which connects with lateral elongated slots 17. In the form of device shown in Fig. 1, there is but a single supporting arm 17 for each device. It will, of course, be understood that my invention contemplates the provision of either a single arm 17 or a double arm, as the case may require.
The manner of using the invention is shown in Fig. 1. A series of the improved supporting devices are. hung, by means of the plates 12, to the flanges of the I-beams 14. There is then laid across the supporting arms 17 timbers 18 which serve to support the cross timbers 19, these two'sets of timbers forming a scaffolding-on which the hollow tile or brick work is built across the room and into the space between the flanges ot the I-bcams. After the tile or brick has set the scatlt'ilding is removed, and this may 'a suitable tool-that may be used to turn the is provided to lower or raise the rod 10 into combination with a hooked plate adapted. take'over a fixed-v support, of a rod movable 2o in said plate, means whereby said rod may be raised and lowered, in said plate, said rod having a plurality of perforations near one end thereof, .a supporting arm independent of and slidable on said rod, said so arm having therein a substantially annular opening and connecting lateral slots, the annular opening in said arm being adapte to: engage said rod whereby said arm is revoluble about and longitudinally movable 35 on said rod, said supporting arm having opositely disposedupturned ends and a pin adapted to be inse'rted'in said perforations to hold said arm in adjusted position on said rod.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
JAMES MGMAHON. v
enable the rod to be turned, it is provided at its upper end withan orifice 15 ,to receive rod. After the arm 17 has been removed, the handle 11 is turned on the thread 10 until the .rod l0 -drops out of the handle; then the plate 12 is removed from the flange of: the I-beam, and the several parts of the device may then be reassembled and installed for'use in another place.
It will be understood that the purpose of the plurality of orifices 15 is to provide means for adjusting the arm 17 vertically so as to accommodate difierent thicknesses of scafioldin and varying thicknesses of brick or tile oors or arches. The handle 11 such position that the" arm 17 when loaded always stand straight, horizontally.
Havingthus described myinventio'n what I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is In a'device of the character described, the
