FREDERICK A. FELDKAMP, F NEWARK, .NEW JERSEY, A SSIGNOR TO ELECTROLYTIC PRODUCTS CO., A CORPORATION OF N EW'JERSEY.
HOLLOW TAPE, RIBBON, on 1mm or METAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,338.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. Fenn- KAMIP, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hollow Tapes, Ribbons, or Bands of Metal; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description ofthe invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t -characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invent-ion has reference, generally, to a novel article of manufacture, in the form of a comparatively thin and hollow tape,
ribbon, or band of metal; and, the invention-has for its principal object to provide primarily a hollow tape, ribbon, or band of metal, which may be of any suitable and considerable length, andof any suitable width, the hollow tape,- ribbon, or band, however, being uite thin with respect to p the length and width of the samef The invention has for its further object to provide a hollow tape, ribbon or band of may be provided with a such stud-like elements stil has such fleximetal, the various parts of which are all integrally united, and the flat walls of the hollow tape, ribbon or band of metal, being provided with a multiplicity ofsmall holes and united interiorly o the hollow'tape, ribbon, or band, by hollow or tubular studlike elements in alinement with the respective holes in the opposite wall-portions or faces-of the tape, ribbon or band: and, furthermore, the invention has for another object to provide a hollow tape, ribbon, or
band, of the general character --hereinbefore mentioned, which, while it is hollow, and reat .numberv of ble or resilient properities, that the hollow metal tape, ribbon or band, may be flexe or bent with relation to Its length, or may bC'SUltfiblY rolled upon a reel, or the like, if
desired.
Qther objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects of the presentg invention in view, the invention consists,
primarily, in the novel hollow tape, ribbon or band of metal of the general character herelnafter more particularly set forth.
The invention is illustrated in the accomv panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an edge view of a portion of a hollow tape, ribbon, or band made of metal and embodying the principles of the present Invention, said view showing a portion of the tape, ribbon, or band rolled upon a reel; F1g. 2 is a top-face view of the said hollow metal tape, ribbon or band, one end-portion of the same being represented in horizontal section; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical or face 3, and the connecting and longitudinally extending wall-like edges 4, the said edges 4 being integrally united with the inner'face-portions of the respective wallportions 2 and 3, so as to rovide a hollow metal tape, ribbon or ban with the endportions of the same left open. The said flat wall- portions 2 and 3 is providedwith a multiplicity of holes or openings, as 5, which preferably "are of circularmarginal conformation, but may be ofany other suitable shape, as will be clearly evident.
In alinement with each pair of oppositely v placed holes, and integrally-united with the inner faces of the respective wall- portions 2 and 3, and so as to extend directly across the interior of the hollow metal tape, ribbon or band, are a multiplicity of connecting members, preferably in the form of hollow or tubular stud-like elements orposts 6.
The herein-above described hollow metal tape, ribbon or band 1 may be put to various uses, in practice, one of the general uses to which it 15 put belng in the construction of radiators or coolers for automobiles, in which case the hollow spaces between the wall- portions 2 and 3 and the edge-walls 4.- provide a water-receiving space through which the hot water passes, the heat radipurposes.
of lead, or other =readil through or injan elect-ro-p atlng bath, thin atingreadily through the thin walls 2 and 3 and the edges 4 as well'a-s through the walls of the tubular stud-like elements 6. f
The said hollow metal tape, ribbon or band may also be used in the construction of other devices and apparatus which are usedv in general either for cooling or heating The 'hollo metal tape, ribbon or band beingvery t in, it is evident that in prac-v tice the tape, ribbon or band can not be produced by casting, but may be successfully made by passing or immersing a correspondingly formed tape ribbon or band fusible metal layers of the .met.al,' such as cop er, being deposited electrolytically upon al the exposed surfaces of the said lead or other metal matrix or core, which is finally melted out of the copper orother metal shell by I means of the application of heat, so as to leave the final product, in the form of the hcllow metal tape, ribbon or band,- herein- 1 above described.
The hollow metal tape, ribbon or band finally produced, while having flexibility,-
has great strength, and the various wallportions 2, 3 and 4, are all'of uniformv thickness, but still are very thin, so that radiating surfaces of great efliciency are produced.
1. As a new article of manufacture a onepiece structure in the form of'a tape, ribbon or band comprising inte lly 'united face-walls and edge-walls, sa i d tape, ribbon or band being made of'metal and behollow, and connecting members united with the inner faces of said face-wa'lls said connecting members extending across the space between said face-walls.
2. As anew article of vmanufacture a one-piece structure in the for m of a tape ribbon or band comprisin integrally unite face-walls and edge-wal s sald tape, rib-.
bon or band being made 0 metal and bein hollow and having open end-portions, an connecting-membersunited with the. inner faces of said face-walls, said connecting members extending across the space between said face-walls.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a tape, rlbbon or band comprising integrally united face-walls and ed e-walls, said ta ribbon or band being ma e of metal and ev the said face-wall being provided with fa multiplicity of holes, andtubular stud-like elements integrally united with the inner faces of said face-walls and in alinement with the holes in' said face-walls;
In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this first day of April, 1912.
