MEANS FOR THE MANUFACTURE 0F CARBURETEDWATE-GAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar.11,1913.
Application filed September 7, 1911. Serial No. 648,111.
I. T 0 aZZ who/m, 'it may conce/rn:
` Be it known that l, Lam verri-1 DALY CannoLL, a citizen of the United States ot America, residingat West minster, England, 5 have invented Improvements Relating to `Means for the hlanutacture of Carbureted laters Gas, ot' Ywhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the preheating ot oil for earburetcd water gas manufacture,
,and reference may be had to the specification oft' `British Letters Patent No. (S32-lot' 1893 which describes an oil heater situated in the gas conduit between th( fixing chainbers and,the washeeseal'and heated by the l,sensible heat of the hot newly made carbureted water gas issuing il'rom the fixing chambers bet'ore this gas has been cleaned and cooled by contact with the water in the washer-seal. This oil heater has been and is still extensively used, but has nel proved wholly satistactory t'or the 'followingt reasonsfltirst, the oil is heated only during' the period ot' xLrasnuiking', and cools duringjr the period ot blasting; and secondly, the heater although etticient when new and clean soon has its heating' surface fouled with carbonaceous matter deposited by the crude carbureled water gas and becomes inetl'ective. 'llo overcome this latter difficulty oil heaters in many cases have been placed in the outlet conduit from the washer-seal, but. as the temperature of the partially-oleaned gas at this point is below 2000.1"2, heaters so located areuseless.
As the broad result of the above ditlicnltics, the preheating 'ot Oil for carbureted water gas manufacture has been largely abandoned. Nevertheless, the gradual accumu- 10 lation ot the carbonacemis deposit in the gas conduit nix-.essitatcs periodical stoppage and cleaning. .l have 'recently found that this deposit can be burned and its accumulation prevented by introducing;i a regulated snp- 4-3 ply ot nir into the bottom of the gas conduit when at its ordinary working temperature; and. bv caret'ul elvperiment, I have disl covered that carbonaceons matter deposited duringr the ,u'asunakiner period upon :in oil heater within this conduitI can be safely.
regularly and automatically burned during the blast period in such a manner as, not, only to keep the oil heater in clean and elli-- cient condition, but also to utili/.e thisl otherwise objectionable deposit to continue the heretofore interrupted preheatingof the oil throughout the blast period; thus the oil in the heater will be at the proper temperature at the liieeinning ot' each period of gas! making, and the almost prohibitive ditticulties hitherto attaching to oil heating are effectively overcome.
The accompanying diagram illustrates carbureted water gas apparatus embodying this invention.
o is the gas generating chamber, Z) the car-v bureting chamber and a' the fixing chamber; these chambers are provided with the usual connections but for the sake of clear-ness these are not, vshown. from tbe'tiyinn' chamber to the washer seal e and f s'tho pil heater, which may be substantially as= ',tescribed' in the specification ot' the said torn-ier Letters Patent or of any other suitable type. f] is the air blast pipe fitted at'. /i with a double disk valve of well known kind and 2' is the stuck valve which is operated by a lever/c. Z is a pipe con necting the space between the. disks of the air blast-valve at It with the low'ei part of S0 the conduit Z and fit-ted with a valve m coupled by links n with the lever 7c so that the valves i and mopen and close together. o is a .regulating` stop valve.. lVith such an arraiurenient, when the valves h and z' are 85 open for blasting, the valve m is also open and air under pressure passes at a rat-e regulated by the valve 0 into the conduit (I, where it causes combustion of the hot car bonaceons deposit which continues the heatingr of the Oil. The products of combustion escape through the stack valve. This coinbustion of the deposit prevents its accumulation thereby keeping the oil heater clean and eflicient.
As the valve zy is closed duringnthe gas- Vmaking period, by connecting the pipe Z to the spacebetween the disks of the valve It air would be prevented from flowing into the conduit Z during,Y gas-making even if,as 100 through any mishap to its connections, the valve vn should not then be closed. Furthermore, there is fitted in the pipe Z a non -1'e turn valve /i so that gas troni the conduit Z cannot pass back through the pipe Z to the valve l1.. ."\s additional protection a vent pipe f] is attached to the pipe Z between the valves m and p through which vent pipe gas will escape in view ol the operator it the valve n1. is not closedduring;l gas-making. "0
(l is the gas conduit 70 j To avoid Weste of air this vent pipe in tilted with a valve ff coupled to the links n so t0 close when the valve m is opened.
