OF BERLIN, GER-MANY, ASSIGNOR TO MERGENTHALER LINOTYP COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TYPE-LINE-CASTING MACHINES.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
Application filed September 15'1911. Serial No. 649,528.
To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, Hnmmcn Dnopsnn. a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 26 l-Iollmannstrasse, Berlin, in the (terman Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in the 'lrimming App: ratus of Type Jane-Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the trimmin; apparatus of type line or type bar casting machines such as those known commercially under the trade mark Linotype."
It. has already been proposed to providc a plurality of pairs or sets of trimming knives capable of being; turned as a siogde entity, about a vertical axis so as to present one or other of the said sets in position for trimming the cast typo bars according to the particular body dimension of the respective type bar, the two knives of each pair being situated at a distance apart corresponding to the body dimension of the type bars to be fore of the mold in which the said tvpc bars in that respect. differing from the other pair or pairs. In that arrangement the substitution in operative position of one pair of knives imanother pair was effected manually. and the object of the present invention is to provide for this substitution being cllectcd automatically.
.-'&ccording to this invcntion. 'ncansv arc provided whereby each mold automatically brings the pair of knives appropriate to that mold into register therewith.
In the accompairvingr drawings '1 iS a front elevation "partly broken away and partly in vertical section, of the unproved devices; Fig. .2 is a view of the samc partly in plan and partly in horizontal soca right-hand side elevamechanism. showing thc diil'ercnt pairs of ive trimming position of part of the means for locking the knives in their respect tions.
The trimming knives 1, as prcviously stated, are mounted in pairs, the two knivcs of each pair being situated at a distance apart corresponding to the width of the mold in connect ion with which thcy arcintended to be used, and as thc slug is passcd between them, its sides are trimmed hr the outer edges of the knives in the usual manner.
trimmed by them and thcrc- The knives 1, of which, in; the example illustrated. there are four pairs, are each of approximatcly triangular form in transverse section, and at their ends they are rigidly secured together by rings 3,4 so as to form virtualLya complete entity. 3, t are each provided with a short vertical trunnion 5. (3 respectively, each of which is capable of rotating about a common vertical axis in the respective bearing 7, 8 fastto the machine .t'rame. Below the bearing 8, the trunnion t) has rigidly attached to it, a toothed wheel 9 and a locking head or collar It), the latter provided with as many diamctrical holes 11 as there are pairs of trinnuing knives 1, these holes, if desired, also extcnr'lingz through the trunnion 6.
1'2 is the rotating mold wheel carrying, in the example illustrated. two molds 13, 14, butthere may be more than this number of molds on the wheel 12. The molds 13, 14, or more strictly speaking, the caps 13, 14 thereof, each carry a pin or stud 15, 16 respcctivcly each of which is at a different radial distance from the axis of the mold wheel 12. The studs 15, 16 rotate with the mold whcel and are so positioned that. (duriug'thcir rotation. they engage with the vertical edge of a plate 17 which is capable of sliding horizontally in or on a stationary n'uidc 18. movement of the said plate in one direction being etl'cctcd by a compression spring 19 and in the reverse direction (in opposition to the spring 19) by the action of the studs 15. 16 against the left-hand edge of thc plate 17. The-sliding plate 17 has rigidly attached'to it a toothed rack 20 in constant gear with the before-described wheel 9 so that as this plate is moved in or on its guide 18 it turns the knives 1 about the axis of the trunnions 5, 6 to a corresponding extent.
.\s the studs 15, 16 are. as aforesaid, situatcdat ditlcrentradial distances from the axis of the-mold wheel 12, it is obvious that as each mold is turned into the vertical position in front of the. ejector 21. and at the back of the trimming knives l. the latter will be turned about their pivotal axis-to corrospondiugly varying extents which are so dctcrniined that the particular knives/1 ap aa'tainiug to the mold then in the ejectlug position. are prcscntcd to the front of that mold.
In order to secure the knives 1 against The rings rotation when the type line is being forced between them, a locking pin 22, Fig. 3, is so arran ed as to enter and engage with the particular hole 11 which, at the time, alines with it. This locking pin 22 is rigidly secured to a part of the machine which operates simultaneously with the ejectment of the type bar, and preferably moves in a direction parallel with the axis of the mold wheel, for example it may be secured to the mold wheel slide 23. The forward end of the locking pin 22 is tapered so that it may freely enter the holes 11, and behind this tapered end it is of substantially the same diameter as that of the holes 11, so that,
' even if there be backlash between the teeth of the wheel 9 and the rack 20, this pin will serve both to accurately pdsition the knives 1 and rigidly secure them against accidental displacement. During the next ensuing retract-ionof the mold wheel slide 23 the locking pin 22 is disengaged from the locking head 10 so as to leave the knives 1 free to be re-positioned by the appropriate stud 15 or 15.
Having thus described my invention, I
declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- '1. In a type linecasting machine, the combination with a plurality of pairs of trimming kn'es capable of being turned about. a commo. axis and a mold wheel carrying a plurality of molds of different body dimensions, of means adapted to automatically turn the knives about the said axis to present to each mold brought into ejecting position a pair of knives of a corresponding body dimension.
