Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
Application led Febriiaiy 23, 1912. Serial No. 679 249.
To It?! 'who/it [l5 muy marc/ii Be it known that I, Airriiin lV. Siii'rii, a citizen of the United States. and resident of the borough of Manhattan. city ot' New York, in the county of New York and State of New York., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typedi'riting Machilies, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to typewriting niachines and more particularly to case shift mechanism for such machines.
The objects of the invention. generally stated, are toprovide easily operating etiicient and comparatively simple case shifting mechanism which may be actuated with but little noise and in which the shifted part is effectively guided in its case shifting movements and is held against lateral vibration in both the normal and shifted positions.
A further object of the invention, more `specifically considered, is to convert a No.
15' Yost machine, for example, and in which the platen receives a case shifting movement, into a shifting basket machine, and to etiect 'such change by comparatively simple means and without the necessity of rc-organizing or modifying the type actions of such ma- A. still further object ot .my invention' is to provide means which are applicable alike to both shitting basket and shifting platen machines for locking or holding the shifted part against vibration.
Another object of my invention isto provide effective spring returning means t'or the bodyin my invention. Fig..2'.is a like skel-A etonize View ofthe same showing the basket. shifted for upper case writing, Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view ot the machine with parts omitted. Fig. 4 is a fragmentaryA` detail. perspective view of the locking links and the manner of connecting and listing the same.
I have shown my invention embodied in the present instance'in a front-strike shifting basket machine, and while certain features ot the invention r .ti particularlynto a machine in which the type bars receive a case shifting movement, other features of the invention are also applicable to machines in which the platen receives a case shifting movement aswillhereinafter more clearly appear.
- The trame ot the machine comprises side plates 1, a rearcross plate 2- and top plates 3 and 4. Oppositely grooved guide rails 5 are fixed to the side 'plates to cooperate with suitable anti-friction rollersto support a suitable carriage in placc..such a lcarriage for example as that employed in the No. 15 Yost machine except that the platen in the present instance is fixed against case.
shifting movement. Thus the carriage snpports a cylindrical platen 6, diagrammatically shown in Figs. 1 and?. which travels over the top plate from side to side of the machine under control of the usual'escapement mechanism and which is held rin any suitable manner against case shifting movement. l
The type actions shown in the present instange are similar to those employed in the c' No.115 Yost machine. Thus, each key lever 7 is pivoted at 8 on a pivot rod which is carried by upwardly extending bracket arms 0' which project from a cross bar 10, said bar being` detachably fixed to theside plates 1 of the machine. Each key lever/extends forwardly to the' keyboard of the machine and fis provided with a finger key 11. An upwardly extending link 12 is connected at its lower end to a key lever, and at its upper', end to a forwardly extending arm of an an-y gular sub-lever 18. Each sub-lever is Vpivoted on a double fulciuin, as at 14, to a hanger 15 which is detachablyconnected to a segment or support- 16. A rearwardly extending two-part pull link 17 is connected at its forward end to the uprightI arm of a sub-lever and is connected at its rear end to a driver 18, the latter being pivoted on a pivot wire 19 carried by a segment or support 20. Each driver 18 is pivoted at 21 to a type bar 22 intermediate the ends of the latter. The foi-wordend of nach type lia-r is pivoted at 23 to a guide link which latter is pivoted on a pivot wire Eolo a .segment or support Q6. 'lf he rear end o tz each type bar carries a type block?? provided with a lower case type 28 arranged directly in line with the stem 29 which connects the type block with the type bar, whereas the upper case type 30 is ott-set on the onter or tree end o't the tvpe block. A. contractile returning spring ol connected at one end to the sociated driver i8 and is connected at its opposite end to the companion pnll link l?. This spring is etlective to return the various parts of the type action to normal position, with the tacos of the types resting against an ink pad $32. The pad is supported by a sheet metal trame or container 33, provided at its upper ends with .ars which rest upon parts '55 that are attached to or form part of the. segment 20.
'The parts oit the type actions as thus tar describedx are similar to the corresponding parts embodied in the No. l `Yost machine. in that machine. however, tvpe bars are tixed against case shitting moven'ient` and the platen (i molnited to receive a ease shitting movement to bring Aeither the upper or lower case types ot' the type ha r into use. ln the` preseml instruction the platen ti is fixed against case shitt movement and means are provided whereb)v the type hasketrmai receive a case shift movement relativeliv to the platen. Bv the present invention, the No. l5 Yost. machine .mavv be readil)v converted from a shitting platen machine into a shitting basket machine without modifying the structural features ot the type actions as they exist in the shitting platen machine and without. moditving the operation of the type actions, lhe segments and Q6 may' be cast as one part with the connecting arms, webs or members :lo bv which the ments are united at the sides ot the machine. Downwartfllv extending a rms l? project trom the connecting members 3V and are preferably formed integral therewith, so that the segments 2G, connectingmembers 3G and the depending arms 537 may all be made as a single casting or trame which is adapted to receive a vertical case. shitting movement, as will hereinafter more clearlv appear. A separate cross bar 3S extends transversely of the machine, and is detachlili ably connected at its` ends by screws to rearward extensions on the members 36. This cross bar constitutes a support tor a` type guide 39, said guide being formed with a depending' arm 40 which is connected to the cross bar 538 b v screws 4l. The type guide is thus connected for case shitting movement. with the segments 2O and 26. Parallel shitty links 42. 43 are arranged in two pairs. one above the other` to support the type basket in its case shitting movement. The parallel links Ll2 are pivoted at their fora, am
ward ends on shouldered nuts `tl. each ot which cooperates with the threaded end ot' a headed screw l5 which is received in an opening in a side plate ot the machine. The r ar end of each of the links 4Q pivoted on a shouldered screw l()I to one ot' the dcpending members 37 connected with the type basket. Each of the set of lower parallel links 43 ig pivoted at its forward end on a shouldered nut 4T which cooperates with a headed screw 1.8 received in the side plate oit the machine. llach shitt link 43 is confined between the shouldered nnt on one side and a lng Tl-9 on the other side. said lug projecting from the side plate ot the machine as shown in Fig. 3. The pivotal support at the forward end of cach link l2 is similar to the pivotal support l'or cach ot the links 43 and the pivots at the same cnds ot' the links l2 are arranged directlyy above and in the same vertical transverse plane as the corresponding pivots ol the links -l-l. A cross bar extends transversehv ot the machine between the shift links 43 and is rigidl v connected at its ends to said links. Each link `ritil 'is pivoted on a shouldered screw 5 1. to one ot the depending arms 3i' ot' the type basket'. it will be seen that the parallel shit't links -t-l and lil. intermediate the pivotal connection between the type: basi ketand the trame ot the machine` are coextensive in length and that` these links between the points indicated, are also substantiall)v cti-extensive in length with the )ull links 17 ot' the type actions and are in e ect arranged in substantial parallelism therewith.
'lhe segment 1G b v which the angular sublcvers t3 are supported is carried b v a fixed portion of the machine and does .not receive a vertical case shift movement with the type basket. Said segment is nevertheless moved during the case shift movement ot the basket at substantially right angles to the direction of such movement, of the basket. This is in order to enable` the case shift movement of the basket to be etlccted without depressing the ke)vv levers or attecting the cooperative relation between the various elements ot the different type actions. Thus. it will be seen that. the segment 16 is pivoted on each side, as indicated at 52. to ay link which in turn is pivozally connected at its rear end, as at 'to one of the depending armi 37 on the shittable type basket; There.
are two of these links 53 on opposite sides ot the machine connected in a like manner.
llach of the'pivots 52, which the links are connected to Athe segment 16, carries an anti-friction supporting roller 55 which is received in horizontal grooved guide ways 56 'formed between fixed lugs 57 which projectinwardlytrom the sidev plates of the frame. These anti-friction rollers` and the fixed guides in which they are received, supthereby. A, single, centrally disposed, lin-k 58 is pivoted at its rear end as at 59 to a depending projection 60 formed on the seg-- nient 20. AThe forward end' of this link isV pivoted at- 61 to a lug formed on the` seg` ment L6.
From an inspectionof Fig. l it4 will be seen thatfthe. links 53 and 58 are in substantial parallelism although the link 58 is longer than the link 53. When the type basket receives a downward movement from the normal position shown in Fig. l to the "liti uppercase position indicated in Fig. "2, a slight forward movement. of the upper end of the segi'nent 16 is eii'ecte'd by the links 53 moving the segment o-n its supporting rollers 55 in the fixed guide lugs 57. The lower' end of the .segment 1G receives a correspomling movement through `the `centrally disposed link 58, thus producing a bodily tor- Ward movement of the segment. 16 in a horil^ zontal direction during the vertical case shift movement' of the type basket. trom the` position shown in Fig. l to that indicated in Fig. 2. The c dect ot this horizontal movement of thel segment lf3 is to produce a slightl forward bodily movement ot' the sublevers 13, thus causing the links l2 to tiirn aroundthe points of their pivotal connec tions with therkey 'leve-rs Without moving the key levers, and without affecting the etfective relation of the dierent parts of the type action. Therefore, a depression of a finger key transmits the same movement to the associated type bart-hrough the intermediate actuating connections when the type basket is in upper case position that it does when the basket is in the normal or lower case position.
The type basket is limited in its case shitt ing movements to and from the normal p0- slt-lon by Stops 62 and 63. The-re are two such stops 62 and two corresponding stops 63, each of which is formed as lan eccentric, being eccentrically mounted on a screw o-l by `which the stop is connected to one of the depending arms 37 connected with the type basket. These eccentric stops 6:2, G3 are preferably made of so-called parchmcntized or indurated fiber or some such equivalent.
hard, fibrous, substantially nona'esilient, material to form an effective stop, and one which will not readily` wear and yet will produce but little noise in-limiting the case shifting movements of the type basket to and from normal position. The stops 62 cooperate with stop shoulders (35 formed on the side plates of 'the machine, whereas the stops 63 coperatel with corres ionfling.r
which are like-wise formed on the side plates of the machine. lt will be understood thatnrotntive adiustmenA of the stops 62 and 63 is effective to vary the extent of case shifting morethe position of the type basket in both Vits normal and shifted positions. `The loosening of a screw 64 enables a rotative adjustment of the companion stopl GQ or G3 to be eili'ected, Whereas the tightening of the screw clamps the stop in its adjusted position.
Short depending links G7 are pivoted at their upper ends on the shouldered screws 51 to thedepending arms 37 of the shittable frame of the type basket. The lowerend of each of these links 67 is pivotally con.- nected at 68 to a shift key leverl 69, i'ulcrumed on the frame of the machine at 70 and extending forwardly to the keyboard, Where it is provided with a linger key 7l.
vThe depression of-either of these finger keys is effective to move the. type basket downwardly from the normal position shown in Fig. l to the upper case or shifted position indicated in Fig. 2. One ot' the shift key levers 69 is preferably provided with a locking device 72 pivoted to the lever at 73 and provided with a linger key 74. A stop pin 75 projects from the locking device and engages the lower edge ot the associated shift key lever to limit the movement of the locking device in one direction on its pivot 73. A contractile spring 76 is connected at one end to the shift keylever G9 and at 'its opposite end to the locking device 72. 'An adgustably mounted fixed engaging meinber 77 .is carried by a side plate of the frame "andis adapted to be engaged at its lower edge by a hook-like portion 78 of the locking device as indicated in Fig. 2. It will be understood that a depression of the key 7l, on the keyl lever which carries the locking device 72, is merely effective to shift. the t pe basket, and when the pressure of the nger is released from said shift key the artsk Will be` restored to normal position. Jgimen, however, pressure is exerted on the key 74 iteti'ective to move the shift key lever 69 downwardly nntil the engaging por tion 78 of the'locking device reaches'the bot=y tom of the engaging member 77 and the pressure exerted on the key is etlective to overcome the power of the spring 76, folicing the engaging port-ion 78 beneath the member 77 and when pressure is released on t-he finger key 74the type basket will'be locked in the upper case position. Slight pressure exerted by the finger on the associated shift key 7l is effective to overcome the pressure l'which holdst-he locking device 72 against the power of its spring 76, and said spring willtlxen be effective to return the locking device to normal position, thus 4enabling the type basket to return to its normal position when pressure on the (inger key 71.]is released. y;
The Mns for normally maintaining the basket in Athe elevated position and for coun; terbalnxicig the weight thereof will naiv 4 restoring springs Si.
described. lt will he observed that each of threaded at Si' for the recept-ion of a headedI the. parallel links t3 is extended rearwardly y opening m a bracket 89. Each 5 and upwardly beyond its point of pivotal connection 51 to torm a lever arm T9.
of these arms is provided at its rear endl with a hook-like portion St) adapted to be engaged by tl.. lower end of a contractile spring Sl. rlhe upper end of this spring receives a nut threaded on the outer snr- Jface thereof to cooperate with the coils of the spring. The nut is also internally threaded for the reception of a headed screw S supported to Aturn freely in an opening` in one et' the side members: 3G of the shiftingr trame. ly these means the upper end of' cach spring' Hl is connected to and shifts with the type basket'. whereas the l lower end is connected to one of the levers 43h79 which `'uide the type basket in its case shifting' movements. then a shit't key Tl is depressed the rear ends of level' arms T9 travel downwardly faster than the type basket, thereby expanding each of the springs 3l as .shown in Fig. 2 and the effective force of these springs is exerted through the levers 79l3 against the pivots 8 to canse the type basketto be shifted upwardly to the normal position when pres-- sure is released on the depressed shift key 7l. By these means the type basket is re turned to normal position and is normally maintained in such position by thc springs 81. notwithstanding the fact that both ends of each spring travel in the direction ot the ease Shifting' movement of the type basket. These means for returning the type basket to normal position and counteracting` the weight. thereof have. in prac-tice. been found to he very effective and to afford an easy shifting movement and an effective restoration of thef parts tol normal position with but a comparatively small expansion of the lt will be understood that so far as this feature of the invention is concerned it is immaterial whether tht` type bars or a platen is the shifted part or is carried by the shiftable frame.
lt will be understood that the type basket in its case shifting" movements is guided by the parallel links or arms 42 and 43. and is also l`eld by said links in the normal and shifted positions against vibration fore and aft of the machine.
ln order to provide. against any lateral vibration of the shittable member or type basket in either its normal or shifted positions` simple and effective means have been provided. Thus` referring more particnlarly to Figs. 3 and l itY will be seen that two substantially horizontally disposed locking links 84 are provided. which links extend transversely of the machine. 'lhe inner end ot each of these linksis provided with an enlarged opening which receives a shouldered nut 86, which latter is interiorly with .said pin by a lost motion connection due to the enlarged openings 85 in-the links.- '.l`he'onter end of cach link Si is pivoted at 92 to an angular bracket 93. and this bracket has its foot-piece perforated as at 94; with elongated openings which extend trans-l versely of the machine in the general direction of the length of the links Sl. vHeaded screws 95 extend through the openings 94 in cach bracket and en e'age in tapped openings in alug 9G formed on the frame of thema-v ehine to clamp the bracket in its adjusted position. ltwill .thus be seen that eachY adjustable bracket 93 constitutes means whereby the outer end of its associated link may be adjusted transversely of the machine toward and away from the nut or pin 8G. 95
to the point of connection with the pin or nnt Sti. lVhelnhowevcr. a shift key is depressed the inner ends of these links will he carried down with the type basket around the fixed pivots 92 and the links will, at: the
completion ofthe Cluse shifting movement, 10.5
extend downwardly and inwardly from the pivots 92 to the-nut 86. Tn other words, at the completion, of the case shifting movementthe links 8l will assume a position at the opposite side of a line drawn through .110
the pivots 92 which corresponds to the position of the links in the normal disposition of the parts.
ln practice. the brackets 93 are adjusted outwardly when the type basket is in either 1.?.5
the normal or shifted position until lost motion between the links 84 and the nut 86 is taken'np. The brackets are ,then fixed in the adjusted positions. and itwill be understood that each of the links 84 in the nor- 120 mal or shifted position automatically takes up the lostmotion between the link and the nut 86 and locks the type basket, against lateral movement or vibration but affords an easy case shifting movement of the 125 basket. Thus in either the normal or shifted position ofl the basket the lost motion between the nut .86 and the links S11-Will be taken up. andthe right-hand link for example will lock 'jor hold the type basket 130 against a transverse movementto the\left, whereas the left-hand link willv lock or hold the basket against a -transversemovement or vibration to. the right. In this'manner the two.. links coperate to lock the type basket against a lateral or transverse vibrationor play when the type basket is in either the normal or the shifted position. By tliese means the usual around guides and roller bearings to guide the type basket and maintain it against lateral vibration may be dispensed with and simple, effective and easily adjusted means may be used in the place thereof.
While the locking links 84; have been shown embodied in a machine in which the type basketreceives a case shifting movement it should be understood that this feature of the invention is equally applicable to a machine in which the platen receives a case shifting movement. In other words, it is immaterial so far as this feature of the invention is concerned Whether the shifting frame withv which the links are connected carries the type bars or the platen and which of these members is shifted to eiect a relative case shifting movement between the ty e bars and platen.
