Be it knownthat I, ROLAND A. M1LLs,.a` citizen of the United States, and a resident of Osceola, in the county of Polk and State of Nebraska, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements inV Game Ap aratus, of which the following isa speci cation, reference being had to the` accompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements iii games and the object of my invention is to provi e an entertaining instructive gaine, educational in character, and in the playing of which the players will become familiar with the geography of the various States of the Union, as well as with the location and population of the various cities, and towns. The playing of the gaine is made further interesting, in that each city and town has a numeral value, dependinfr upon the number of its inhabitants, and these numerical values are added or subtracted during the play, and finally, the object of my invention is to provide an instructive gaine of the general character outlined, which will be of a simple and inexpensive nature, and of a neat and durable construction.

n the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specitication, and in which like numerals of referenceindicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 shows a plan view of a gaine board embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on line 3, 3 of Fig. 1.

In my present invention, I rovide a game hoard in the use of which tie players will become familiar with the location of the rivers, mountains, railroads, counties, cities and towns, of a certain State,vas well as with the number of inhabitants of the cities and towns of the State. I

This inap is surrounded by afield divided into columns, within which are arranged the naines of the various towns and cities, as well as other information relative to the State shown. While I have shown the State of Nebraska, it is to be understood that any other State may be shown upon the game board. In the drawings, I show a game board A, having the inap B, the space D, within which the rules of the game are to be rinted, and the space C, reserved for suitable advertising matter. As a matter of fact, the game board can be made of such a size that the saine may be surrounded by a border reserved for advertising matter.

In the drawing, for the sake of convenience, but four counties are shown upon the map, these being marked McPherson, Rock, Va ley and Furnas. The county seat of McPherson is shown as Tryon, while the county seat of Rock count-y is Bassett., of Valley county is Ord, and of Furnas count)r is IVilsonville. These four counties have been shown because they would illustrate the playing of the game.

At a suitable point, I provide the gaine board with a dial 1, and this dial is divided into a plurality of radial extending spaces 3, within which are printed the names of the counties.

In the drawings, the dial 1 discloses the names of Polli, Valley, Rock, McPherson and Furiias counties. The counties are numbered as shown, Polk county is immybei'ed 1, Valley 4, Rock 16, McPherson QT and Furnas 51. Held centrally within the dial 1 is a pin 5 shown in detail in Fig. 3. and revolubly held upon this pin 5 is the pointer 4. This pointer may be made ot' Celluloid, metal 'or any other suitable inaterial.

At a suitable point, the lrame board A has au opening, which is preferably reinforced by means of a metal gromet 10, and tied lo the gromet is a cord oi4 strand t), which :it its end is secured to the handle (i, which at its lower end is provided with a pin T. lnteiposed between the )in T and the handle f3 is the indicator 5', tiiis indicator being in the form of a hand, with the index finger extended as clearly shown in Fig. 1. operator tien, according to the rules of thel game, places the pin 7 at the point marking` the county seat of the county indicated by the pointer, which as we know is Tryon. The operator then swings the indicator in a circular path. It should be understood for instance, that the distance from the pin 7 to the end of the pointer 6 could represent 8O miles. Now the operator swings the indicator and credits to himself the name of every town touched by the index 6' of the indicator. In the drawings, the path of the ointer leads through Bassett, Ord, and Vilsouville. The player then looks within the proper column and finds that the po iulation of Bassett is 270, of Ord 1372, andl of Wilsonville 20G. The snm total of the number of the population would represent the amount of the applicants first play. The second, and subsequent players would then swing the pointer and repeat the operation. In the course of time, the layers would recall that one town is m1 es from another. In having the map of the State continually before tiem, the players would become familiar with the principal rivers passing through the same, and would also have occasion to note the railroads and their connections, as well as other topographical features peculiar to that especial map.

It is of course understood that the rules could bo changed to suit the layet's.

The game could bo played in suspending the map or gaine board, or in placing the same upon a table, and can be participated in by any number of players. This game can pro )erly be called a State Game, as it ,isinten ed to manufacture the boards with different maps. It is of course also understood l'that the board could be provided with one map upon one side and another map upon the opposite side, and further the maps could represent foreign countries.

" A game constructed according to my invvention is simple and inexpensive, and both durable and efficient, and in form an educational as well as entertaining device.

1. A game board including a suitable map, a dial disclosing the names ofthe count-ies appearing upon said inap, a pointer pivotally ield within said dial to register with said names, and an index provided with a in )oint having a handle arranged to be p ace( u on the points marking the towns upon saic map.

2. The combination with a game board. disclosing a map, of a strand secured thereA to, an indicator, a handle secured to said indicator and a pin extending from said handle, said strand being secured to said handle.

B. A game board rovided with a map and data disclosing tlie names of theI towns shown upon the map, together with the population of each town, a dial disclosing the counties a pearing upon said map, a pointer pivotally lield within said dial, and an iudex havin; an operating handle and n pointer, al arranged as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A game board showing a map, and an indicator including a pin and an operating handle, said pin being arranged to be driven into said map, permitting said indicator being rotated.
