Specification of Letters Patent.

ting out labels or the like from successivef portions of a web or strip of paper, and particularly gummed paper.
Another object is to provide an improved form of punching mechanism wherein the punch and die are both advanced fora certain distance and thereupon the die is arrested while the further advance of the punch will cause the label to be severed.
In the accompanying drawings showing one embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a vertical sect-ion on the line 11, Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a plan view; Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a-vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. l "with the parts in the open position; Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3; Fig. 8 is a side elevation, and Fig.'
9 a bottom plan view of the die member and its support; Fig. 10 is a side elevation; and,
Fig. 11 a bottom plan of the stripper member for the die.
The machine isshown as comprising a suitable base 12, provided with standards 13 and 14 forming bearing members for a beam 15 pivoted between these standards at one end by a shaft 16.
At the front portion .of the maclnne a crank shaft 17 is mounted in bearing members 18 and 19 extending up from the frame,
which shaft is shown as driven by a pulley 20. The crank portion 21 of the shaft has a sleeve 22 rotating in a split block 23 that will be caused to travel in a circular path. This block slides in a slot 24 in the beam 15, as indicated in Fig. 1, and therefore the movement of the block will cause oscillation of the beam 15 according to the vertical travel ofthe block. A guide-block 25 is shown as slidable by its ends in guide-ways 26 and 27 in the side members of the frame,
and carries a punch 28. The punch block is normally retained in its upper and .open position by a bent lever 29 whose arm engages the block to move it upward, the lower arm of the lever being connected witha coil spring 30, whose other end is secured to a lug 31 on'the frame. Tomove the punch downward, it is engaged by a block 32 secured on the beam .15 that will engage the punch block 25 at the lower portion of the stroke and move the punch downwardly; and on the return stroke of the beam the spring 30 will cause the lever to raise the punch and block and hold it against a suitable stop pin 33 on the frame. The arrangement of the die to cooperate with this punch consists of a resilient arm 34 that is secured to a bar 35, which latter is secured to the punch block 25. The die 34 has an opening at 36 to receive the punch 28. The resilient punch plate 34 has its movable end 37 provided with a slot 38 through which extends a screw 39 secured in the plate 35, the head of the screw serving to limit the downward swing of the die plate, as indicated in Fig. 8. In this position the die plate is a short distance removed below the end of the punch, and the web is passed across the die plate under the punch. A guide on the stripper plate is provided in the form of a plate 40 having an opening 41' to receive the punch, and having overhanging lugs 41 at each corner of the plate that engage the side edges of the die plate 34, as indicated in Fig. 6. The stripper plate 40, of course, is offset from the die plate a short distance to permit free movement of the web, and as the punch recedes it will strip the apertured web from the punch, and will also serve to prevent the web from curling up as is usual with gummed paper. To cause the punch to enter the die a suitable obstruction, such as a bolt 42, projectsupwardly through the base 12 to engage the die plate beyond the die and stripper plate, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 8. At the latter part of the downward movement of the punch, this bolt will strike the die plate and arrest its movement, whe-re-' upon the punch will pass through the hole in the die plate and cuta label from the web WV. Means are also provided for advancing the web through the impression de- Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
vice and through the punch device; and such means are arranged to provide slack in the web as it is advanced. At the front of'the machine are mounted a air of horizontal rolls 66 and 67. A gear 0 engages a rack bar 71 pivoted to the arm 58. The oscillation ofthis' arm will reciprocate the rack bar and swing the gear 70. A pawl 72 on this gear engages a ratchet wheel 73 fast on the shaft 74 of the lower roll, whereby these rolls are intermittently advanced from the movement of the bent arm- 58.
At the rear of the machine are arranged a pair of rolls 7 5 and 76 between which the web isadvanced by their rotation, one of the rolls having a shaft '7 7 carrying a ratchet wheel 78. An arm 79 on the shaft 77 carries a awl 80 that when the arm is swung, will a Vance the ratchet wheel and hence the rolls will be swung forward a short distance.
A very'simple form of punch and die is arranged in which the die member is carried by the punch and at the end of its operating movement the die is arrested causing the punch to pass through the die aperture and sever the label.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
