VEHICLE-BODY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
Application filed July 15, 1912. Serial No. 709,435.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. PARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in thecounty of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to box-body vehicles having panels'with continuous curved or bent corners, and the object of the invention is to tie the side and end sills of the frame together where they join at the corners so they will not open up at the joint by expansion and contraction of the Wood to check and crack the panels, and by the same tie-means to put the panel on a strain at the corner bends to insure its close fit there against the frame, and to correct any lack of uniformity in the curvature of the panel at the corner bends such as are common in all bent woodwork due to the nature of the material which cannot be depended upon to hold a given shape.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a corner of a boxbody frame and continuous panel with a corner bend, and embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same parts shown in Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
3 is a side sill of the frame and 4 an end sill. These sills are joined together at the corners in any suitable and usual manner, the exact method not being material to my invention.
5 is the panel for the side and end formed preferably in a single piece of a length to extend from one front corner of the body to the other and is steamed and bent in the usual manner around a suitable form to produce rounded corners 6, ends 7 and sides 8.
The corners of the sill-frame are also rounded off to correspond with the bends of the panel, the templet by which the corners of the frame are cut (generally after the frame is joined together) being preferably of the same curve as to size and shape as that of the form around which the panel 5 is bent.
I have found in practice that the straight n: embers 7 and 8 of the panel will spring out, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, after the bends 6 have been made, and frequently there will be a buckling of the fiber of the panel on its inner surface at the curve, and to correct both of these faults, and also to tie the ends of the sills 3 and 4 together at their joints so they will not open or appreciably change the curve and relation of parts, I provide a tie-plate 9 formed out of strap-iron or steel. The ends of the tieplate 9 are extended along the straight vertical sides of the sills 3 and 4 for several inches beyond the curved corners of the frame, and its ends 10 are bent inwardly, as shown, and are introduced into saw-kerfs made for the purpose in the sills. The straight sides of the sills are cut away the thickness of the tie-plate 9 to let the latter in flush with the straight sides of the sills and these cut-away portions to receive the tie-plate 9 are merged gradually into the original or middle curve of the corner of the frame with the result that the finished corner, as reinforced with the tie-plate 9, will have a greater projection at this middle part of its curve than it had before, equal to the thickness of the tie-plate. The result of this construction is that when the panel 5 is assembled and nailed to the frame its curved corner 6 will be strained around the increased middle projection of the rounded corner of the frame, a tight joint between the panel and frame will result and any departures in the curvature of the panel corners will be corrected.
The hooked ends 10 of the tie-plate 9 afford suflicient anchorage by insertion into the curves of the frames to prevent any tendency of the frame to open at the corners due to expansion and contraction of its wooden sills.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a vehicle body corner, sills meeting at an angle and cut to form a curved outer corner, a tie-plate connecting the adjacent sill-ends, said plate projecting at its middle portion beyond the curved corner and having its ends anchored in their respective sills, and a one-piece upright panel to form the side and end of the body with a curved inside corner making a close joint with and suitably secured to the side sill and end sill and also making a close joint with the tieplate at the corner of the sills.
2. In a vehicle body corner, sills meeting at an angle and cut to form a curved outer corner, a tie-plate connecting the adjacent sill-ends, said plate projecting at its middle portion beyond the curved corner and having its ends anchored in their respective sills, said sills being cut away next to said anchorage to-let the tie-plate in even with. the straight surface of the sill, and a onepiece upright panel to form a side and end of the body wlth a curved corner making a close'joint with and suitably secured to the side sill and endsill.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 3rd day of July, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and twelve.
THOMAS H. PARRY. [11. s.]
