Be it. known t at we, GEORGEWILLIAM' Davis andJoearH SonoMcN DUMAs,f the city of Westmount, Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, both subjects of the King of Great'Britain, have' invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Locks oflType-Writing Machines; an we do hereby vdeclare that the following-is a full, clear, and exact description This invention relates particularly tothat class of typewriting machines in which is employed a horizontally swinginghty e-lock having an arm adapted when t e ock is operated to engage a part of. the' writing mechanism and prevent'the operation of the latter. and a pair of arms engagedduring the escapement-controlled fee by a part upon the carriage for the purpose of successively arrestin the carriage at two dif ferent distances om the end of the line. A key is arranged to act upon the lock to shift the same against the resistance of a spring and permit the operator to write a few more .characters after having1 been stopped by the first arm of the pair, ereto fore the second arm of the pair served as an abutment affording a iinalfstop for the carriage. When the tabulator was carelessly used or the carriage otherwise, possibly1 by 'inadvertence, allowed to run freely wit out being arrested, by' tabulator stops for in- 'stancef'itwould st rike one or the other of this pair of arms .and frequently damage the lock.
' vThe object o1 the present invention is to relieve'thelock of shocks of' this nature and at the same time permit of its use under escapementffeed conditions-to, as formerly, lock the machine successively at twoditerent distances from the end of the line.
To this end the invention consists of meanslpermitting the required movement of the loc to enable the latter to lock the machine when operated' under escapementfeed conditions, and to come into action and 'displace the lock'from the path of the member shifting it, when' the carriage moves it more than the required amount.

The lock is in the main similar to the construction heretofore used, the present improvements being obtained by adding a structural feature thereto and placing a stop on the carriage-supporting frame in position to` most effectively transmit shocks exerted thereono the machineframe This lock consists o an oblong sheet-metal plate 2 slotted at one end as at 3 and having an oiset locking arm 4 'extending downwardly from a lateral extension 5 at one side of the plate a short distance from the opposite end thereof, and a' pair of angular arms 6, 7, extendn downwardly from the opposite side edge o the lateand having their ends turned beneath t e latter. The end of the plate opposite the slot 3 is reduced in width to a narrow"neck 8 formed with a diagonal finger 9. This device is slidably pivoted to one side of the under-side of ,the up er portion 10 of the machine frame by a ulcrumcrew 1-2 through the slot 3, its opposite end with finger 9 thereon being supported in sliding Acontact with the opposite side of the frame by an. offset-plate 13 fastened in lace by screw 14 and steadied in position y a lug 15 at one end envaging the face 16 of that ortion of the, rame. ' .What 'we claim` is as follows -'1.In a 'typewritin'g machine comprising Aa vcarriage with a trip device thereon and movable therewith,a device adapted to be engaged-by the trip device upon the carriage when'the latter nears the end of the line, and means automatically displacing the locking device from the path of the said t-rip device upon the carriage under different operating conditions.
2. A typewriting machine comprising a carriage having a trip-device thereon and movable therewith, a carriage supporting frame having acarriage-stop rigidly mounted thereon, a device for locking the machine and havin an integral member in the path'ofthe sai trip-device, such lockingdevice being adapted to be 'moved by the trip device upon the. carriage to locking position, and fmeans formed integrally with the locking device for automatically di-.iplacin'g'the said locking device and moving the said member out of the path of the tripdevice.

A typewriting machine comprising a main frame, a carriage having a trip-devicethereon, a carriage-supporting frame mounted upon the main frame and having a carriage-stop rigidly mounted thereon, a type-lock platevsl'otted at one end for sliding pivotal connection with the machim` fra-me and having an arm intersecting the path of the trip-device, means slidably supvportingthe'opposite end of the plate, means yieldinglyretainin'g the plate with its arm in intersecting-position, and means whereby under certain conditions the said trip-device displaces the vvarm from intersectingposition. 4. A typewriting machine comprising a main frame, having apin projection, a carriage having a trip-device thereon, aV cardage-supporting ramegmountedV upon the main fra-me and having a carriage-stop nection with themachine frame andhaving an arm intersecting the path of the trip-device, means slidably supporting the `opposite end of the plate, means yieldingly retaining-the plate with its arm in intersectfing position, and the said opposite end of c the plate having a neck and a diagonal finger for' engagement 'with the pin projection 'upon the frame whereby/under certain conditions, the said trip-device dis- .places the arm from intersecting position.'
